During our first meeting, Pope Francis reminded me that the first almoner was Judas, because he held the Apostles’ money bag. Everyone thought that Judas went to give money to the poor after he left the Last Supper. However, he went to sell the Lord Jesus. The Holy Father emphasized, “Remember that money can be used excellently, and help many, but it can also cause harm—just as it harmed Judas.”

I saw a very sweet post made by a Christian saying that she met a Pagan man in a Christian discord server who wanted to check it out. She mentioned that she befriended him and talks to him.

What did the comments say? There was a comment that started with "Be careful." Be careful of what? Communion with a fellow neighbor? The rest of the comment even had the audacity to tell her to look up traditional Christian arguments and even asked her if she wanted suggestions of other Christian servers to go to. What does "Be careful.," signify? It signifies that we should fear our neighbors who aren't like us. This comment tried to spread the ideology that we should be prepared to cause conflict with our neighbors and even worse, run from them. Abandon them when they aren't like us like they are some street rat that you stumbled upon.

My friends, does this seem like something Jesus asked of us? No. Jesus didn't abandon people. He didn't fight with them. He built a friendship with them despite their backstory. He wants us to build these friendships as well so it is harmful to spread the idea of the opposite. This is why a lot of people dislike Christians. We spread the opposite of what Jesus wants from us.

The creator of the post responded in way that Jesus wants. She responded to the comment by explaining that she is not focused on converting her neighbor, she is focused on building their friendship. May we look to her as an inspiration for her actions are how we show the love of God. Debates do no good, love does. Love teaches, love cares, love builds. This is why the bible tells us to knock the dust from our feet and let people make their own decisions.

I would like to point out that I am not shaming the person who posted the comment because we all make mistakes. This comment helped give an example of God's teachings and love playing out. May we pray for others and for ourselves so that we can learn to get past our temptations of viewing our pride as compassion. May we pray so we can live out Christ's teachings to the fullest.

We have to remember that Jesus is in one sense a model but also he is God. Jesus was never at risk of falling into spiritual or moral error through those who encountered. For regular humans, most of us are heavily influenced by our friends. Scripture even warns of it:

Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

Do not be mismatched with unbelievers. For what partnership is there between righteousness and lawlessness? Or what fellowship is there between light and darkness? What agreement does Christ have with Beliar? Or what does a believer share with an unbeliever?

I would suspect that most of those comments were out of fear for the pagan influencing the Christian to turn away from faith more than anything else.

It might be helpful to change the context a little bit to help illustrate this. You are a progressive Christian. Let us say that one of your friends met a man at a coffee shop and they end up hanging out there. After a while, the conversation turned to politics and your friend found out that he is an ethnonationalist and also a fascist. Not fascist as in 'Trump supporter' but fascist as in someone who believes that the ideal form of government for America would look something like Franco's Spain and who reads Gentile and Mussolini. Your friend tells you that she was taken aback at first, yet he was charming, sweet (paid for her coffee), and was actually very intelligent and made good points for his beliefs. She told you that as much as she is herself a Democrat, she isn't interested in pushing back on his beliefs and just wants to be his friend and plans to have regular meet ups with him at this coffee shop. Another of your friends is part of this conversation with the two of you, tells her to be careful, and to make sure she reads up on reasons why liberal democracy is a superior political philosophy to fascism. Would you have the same admonition to the friend giving the warning and advice, that we shouldn't fear relationships with neighbors who aren't like us?
