It had been well over a year since Alex had drank even a sip of alcohol and now it was going straight to her head. With El–Jesse's mom–watching Lexa, her intention had been to have the best time at this party, but with every drink her mood seemed to drop and she couldn't quite place her finger on why. Maybe it was still the hormones?
Zoning back into her surrounding, she sighed at the presence of yet another person looking for her best friend. "For the hundredth time, no, I have no idea where Jesse is!" How many people was Sapphire trying to set him up with!?

Flashback: December, 2024
When: December 29th, 2024 Where: Walker Holiday Cabin, Buffalo, NY Who: Jesse and Alex @a-lexvandervort
The soft glow from the fire made the room feel like it was some place out of time, you know? As if the world outside didn't exist anymore. Jesse had been lulled by the glowing embers, eyelids becoming increasingly heavy as he looked into the flames. The Walkers had celebrated Christmas on the Upper East Side at home as usual. Of course, it was made even more special by it being Lexa's very first Christmas. Jesse had been so excited and had definitely gone overboard with the gifts. He wasn't the only, though.
After, they'd invited Alex and Lexa to come join them at their holiday cabin. It was one of Jesse's favourite places in the world, his home away from home. They'd had so much fun making sugar cookies, roasting marshmallows, playing in snow... Alex had been so happy, too. This year had been hard for her, he knew that. Everything had changed so completely, their whole lives had been turned upside down. For the better. They were sitting on the floor in front of the fire now, Jesse's arm around her. Lexa was asleep in her bassinet and the silence was comfortable. Nice.
Jesse felt his head start to nod, suddenly opening his eyes back up. He turned to Alex, a small smile on his face as he looked over at her. "I shouldn't have had that extra helping of pie. I'm ready to pass out into a food coma."
Alex had been at the Walker family holiday cabin before, but never at Christmas; never like this. She had spent time with his family before, of course, but being here with Lexa while they made gingerbread houses and homemade ornaments was enough to bring her close to tears. Her own family Christmases had been perfectly fine, but they came with an edge of parental disappointment and certainly weren't as personalised. When she thought about the future that she wanted for her daughter, it looked a lot like this; full of love, and care, and no obligations to be anything other than yourself.
In the soft glow of the fireplace, she watched the bassinet, still baffled at how she could love one tiny person so much. Lexa was already four months old and Alex was starting to forget what her life had ever looked like without her. Her eyes shifted to look up at Jesse, smiling to herself when she saw his eyes were closed and his head was drooping. Ever since he had found out that she was pregnant, he had been perfect. He had been there for her through it all–like he always had been.
Jesse's head dropped fully and his eyes shot open to Alex already gazing up at him. She wasn't even embarrassed to be caught staring. Lying here with him was comfortable–as easy as breathing. Alex smiled in response, "You know if you hadn't eaten it, you would still be thinking about it now." She laughed quietly, not wanting to wake Lexa. "Do you want to put the fire out and head to bed?"
"No, dad, I know. There's no way that you lose out on the Fitzherbert account, not after last week. Yes, I can put in the extra hours-," Logan opened the door for Alex and sweet Lexa, still speaking with his dad on his hands-free. "I know, I'll see what I can do. Move the De Luca meeting to 3 on Wednesday, and I'll handle it." Logan wasn't exactly dressed for looking after Lexa. No one needed to wear a three piece, tweed, suit with their hair slicked back so securely a hurricane couldn't move it, to watch Peppa Pig. He turned to Alex apologetically. "I am so sorry I was late. I'll get you a key cut, okay? That way you don't have to wait anymore. I- Hi, baby-," Logan said softly, waving at Lexa, "Do you want me to take her?" he offered, holding out his arms.
Alex was about to knock again when the door opened, but Logan wasn't speaking to her. Was he on a handsfree call? Was he wearing tweed? She remained in the doorway a moment longer than could be considered normal–free hand still raised and mouth slightly agape–before finally stepping inside. Listening to the words of their call, an uncomfortable feeling washed over Alex as she tried to figure out what kind of Twilight Zone she had walked into. "Okay..." She responded, brow furrowed. Alex passed Lexa over to them when he offered, but she was still looking at him like they were a stranger. "What's going on? Are you still able to watch her today?"

As per their regular schedule, Alex found herself at Logan's door with Lexa on her hip, waiting far too long for them to open the door. She had text them before she had left to let them know she was on her way, but hadn't received a reply. It wasn't like him and, honestly, she was a little worried. "Logan? Are you home?" She called through the door, knocking a second time.

Text ➜ Alex
Sapphire: do you think jesse would go for tabby dryden??? Sapphire: like, does he even HAVE a type?? @a-lexvandervort
Alex: What do you mean? Alex: Why would that even be a situation that would come up?
"That's not fair, Alex. She is family to me," he said, still utterly confused as to where all this was coming from and what she meant. Jesse had spent just as much time with Lexa as anyone, she can't have thought that he wasn't family, right? It was the same for Isobel. Ceren, Jess. Their support system was strong, full of family and friends. People who loved them and loved Lexa. Why did anything else matter?
Logan was totally blown away by the anger that was coming from Alex in waves. Hearing her say that she hated Isobel was a very bitter pill to swallow, to say the least. He blinked in response, frozen to the spot as he desperately tried to process what she was saying. I hate her. Isobel had been trying so hard now, for so long, and she had been nothing short of amazing with Lexa. With Logan-and-Alex. He wasn't naive, he knew that it was a lot for Isobel to accept. They loved her so much, they couldn't imagine their life without her. They were meant to be together, always. And that wasn't a secret! "I don't understand," he said, shaking his head. "What do you want me to do? Only see my partner when I don't have my daughter? For how long? Alex, Isobel is a part of my life. It's not some secret I can keep, it's not something I'm going to pretend about. I don't-... What do you mean?"
@a-lexvandervort
"I don't care." And in that moment, she really didn't. Alex didn't care if Isobel was like family to Logan, didn't care that they loved her. She didn't need to forgive her for the things she had done and she certainly didn't need to be okay with her being near her baby. Maybe everything would have been better if no one had ever found out who the father was... Somewhere, in the back of her mind, she knew it wasn't fair to put this on Logan, but she did. not. care.
"I want you to use your head, Logan!" She snapped–still quietly so as not to startle Lexa. "I want you to be serious for once in your life and think about what a future with her looks like. You might be fine with Lexa having a literal evil stepmother, but I'm not!" As she ranted, Alex was packing up Lexa's bag with one hand and expertly had it on her back in record time. "I want you to make better choices for the sake of our daughter. I want her gone." With a hand on the door handle, she paused. "Or we'll be gone." Without looking back at them, she stormed out of the apartment.
"Is...," Logan breathed, reaching out to the space that Isobel had since swiftly exited. She was only in the other room, but it might as well have been another continent. There was something in the air between them that set his teeth on edge. When he turned back to Alex, it was clear that she wasn't happy. That she was angry? What could they have possibly missed in the last ten minutes? It didn't take that long to get from the shower to the living room. Confusion was written over Logan's face as they wrestled with her tone of voice. Accusatory. She was accusing him of... something.
"You mean with Isobel?" Logan's brows drew together as they tried to navigate whatever was going on here. "Lexa's mostly with me, but if I need her, yes. Just like Jess or Ceren, my mom. Just like any of my family." Why did he have to explain that? And why did everything feel so off all of a sudden. "Alex, what's wrong?"
@a-lexvandervort
"But she's not family, is she? No. No, she's–..." Alex bit her tongue, not sure how much she could really get away with saying. Isobel Prescott was too many things–a liar, a manipulator; a cold-hearted bitch who broke her brother's heart, stole her own best friend's boyfriend, and then ruined said boyfriend's reputation–she wasn't a woman she wanted influencing her daughter.
Breathing heavily, Alex struggled to calm her heart rate, but it was damn near impossible; she was seeing red and rational thought had left her entirely. "What's wrong?" She scoffed with a laugh, "She is. I've tried to ignore her, Logan. I've tried, but I hate her! Do you understand that? I physically hate that woman and I don't want her being left alone with Lexa. I don't–..." She paused for the briefest moment, but she knew what she wanted. "I don't want her near her. She's not a good role model for a child and... if you're with her, I don't want Lexa being here."
This was Sophia's all time low. Nostalgic reruns of the New York version of Real Housewives was what it took to make Sophia ready to face the swing of the city again. If Luann could hop back into the saddle after losing her Upper East Side home in her divorce from the Count, why couldn't Sophia do the same -- metaphorically speaking, that was. Because she hadn't the guts or decency to finalize anything, leaving Jesse deeper in the mud than she. While 'Hiding in the Hamptons' would make a great autobiography title, Sophia didn't need to live it out any longer.
In New York City fashion, she arrived at Grand Central Station. One roller suitcase was in tow and she wobbled it up a set of stairs, while balancing a small bottle of hand sanitizer in her other palm. It was with another clumsy step of her Chloe ballerina shoes that her luggage, hand sanitizer, and her Vandervort self took a nasty spill at the top of the stairs. A single step left, and she fumbled it.
"Oh, leave it to me. And this is why I said I can't be an intern. Not only do I not want to stand in a hot coffee line at 6 a.m., I'd spill it all by the time I reached the office." Her tweed jacket paired with the classic shoes and annoyance under breath, sure made it appear she was job interview ready. She hoped she was not running late.
So here's the thing about having a baby... almost everything you consume can end up in your child's bloodstream through breastfeeding, so even after giving birth and controlling your caffeine cravings for nine whole months, you still can't intake anywhere near the amount of coffee that your body was previously accustomed to. Alex had been limiting herself to one normal coffee a day since Lexa was born, which meant that unless she wanted it to be shit, she had to travel to the best coffee shops to make that one cup worth it.
One of her favourites came from a little coffee stand just outside Grand Central Station, so after leaving Lexa with Logan that morning, Alex had found herself standing in line, giving her a front row view of Sophia emerging from the station.
Her stomach dropped as she watched her, almost not believing her eyes. Surely she wouldn't just show up without telling anyone! Did Sapphire know she was coming back? Did Jesse? Alex was ready to make an escape–sans coffee–when she stumbled on the last step. Alex closed her eyes, calming herself before walking over. "Yeah, you definitely shouldn't be an intern. The coffee wastage would be a travesty." She held out a hand for her, "Hey."
As Logan pulled on his sweatpants and white t-shirt, hair still damp from the shower, he had no idea what was waiting for them. Logan thought that they'd fallen into a great rhythm now. Logan and Alex had worked out their co-parenting schedules with ease, their families had blended perfectly, and most of all, baby Lexa was beloved. Isobel had been beyond supportive of Logan, held their hand through every fear and spell of anxiety. She had been his rock, like always. They were really settling into becoming a family. It was everything Logan could have hoped for from a situation none of them had planned for. On top of all that, Valentine's Day was right around the corner and the theme for Logan's bash was perfect.
When he walked into the room, he noticed the energy was off immediately. Although, admittedly, anyone could have noticed that. "Hey, if it isn't my three favourite women," Logan greeted with a bright smile, holding out his arms to them all. Alex was early. Logan had no idea how much of a problem that was about to be. "Is everything okay in here?"
@icy-isobel
"Yes. It's called having manners." She snapped, slamming a stuffed bear on to the countertop as Logan entered the room. Isobel's teeth were clenched as she glared daggers at the other woman, only turning her attention to Logan when he spoke of his 'three favourite women'. They seemed so happy with a bright smile on his face, but she couldn't shake her fury at Alex, nor her irritation at even being in the same category as her. "Everything's fine." She managed to force out, releasing her death grip on the bear, before passing by them to remove herself from this room and this situation.
@a-lexvandervort
When Isobel snapped at her, Alex's eyes flashed with rage, and she was about to respond when Logan appeared, all smiles. Watching her leave the room, she noticeably relaxed, but it was clear that she was still on edge. The relationship between them had always baffled her–Logan was one of the loveliest people in the Upper East Side, but Isobel was demonic enough to rival William Huntzberger; they shouldn't work–but she had ignored it for the most part. It shouldn't have been something that mattered to her, but now? The idea that she would have any kind of influence over her daughter was terrifying, to say the least.
"Is that something that happens often?" Alex asked, accusation in her tone. "Lexa being left alone with her?"

So this wasn't good. On a normal day–in a normal situation–Isobel wouldn't have let Alex even look at her like that, never mind everything else that followed, but damn it, she was trying not to mess this up for Logan. Isobel had promised herself that she wouldn't get in the way, that she wouldn't get involved or even offer up opinions on matters that should stay between Logan and Alex, but somehow she felt like she had done something wrong here–despite Alex being the rude one.
Shaking off the way she had looked at her when taking Lexa out of her arms, Isobel followed her to the living room. "They shouldn't be long. Do you want a drink? Let me just–…" Lexa's things were mostly packed, but there were a few toys and a bottle still scattered about, and she busied herself by starting to gather everything.
@a-lexvandervort
"You're offering me a drink?" Had Isobel actually done anything wrong in recent days? No. Did it even seem like she was trying right now? Yes. Was Alex being incredibly unreasonable and maybe a little unhinged? Absolutely. But she could see it now. There was a future out there, where Logan and Isobel stay together and suddenly she she's in a co-parenting thruple with the woman she despises. Isobel Prescott would be her daughter's step-mother–a literal evil step-mother–and Alex wasn't sure she could handle that. "Can you stop? Can you just go let Logan know I'm here?"
@logantheluscious
Not even a year had passed since Alex had given birth to Logan's baby, and Isobel could honestly say that she had never expected to find herself in the situation she was in now. Logan had stepped away for a mere ten minutes to have a shower, and they had left her alone with Lexa. A few months ago, this would have had her panicking, but now she was bouncing the little girl around like it was the most natural thing in the world; she had even become accustomed to Alex always being around and, you know, it hadn't been as horrifying as initially thought.
All in all, they were having a pretty regular quiet morning, when Logan's front door bell sounded. With Lexa on her hip, Isobel made her way over to answer it, even smiling politely upon seeing Alex on the other side, though her eyes did glimpse at the clock to note that she was much earlier than they had thought. "Hey. Logan's just in the shower, do you want to come in?"
@a-lexvandervort
Alex hadn't intended on picking up Lexa this early, but there had been a mix up with the time of her check up and instead of 2pm, it was now scheduled for 11am, so here she was. Taking turns with their little girl had become the norm for them, easily managing to split her time equally between the two of them with very few issues. The door hadn't even fully opened before Alex started speaking, "Sorry, I know I'm early, but the doct–..." The rest of the sentence faded to nothing when she came face to face with Isobel Prescott. An Isobel Prescott that was currently holding her child. "Isobel. Hi."
Since giving birth, Alex had managed to mostly keep her distance from Isobel; so much so, that it was almost easy for her to forget that Logan was in a committed relationship with her. But standing here now, watching her cradle Lexa against her, there was no ignoring it. She stepped inside, reaching her hands out to take her daughter from the other woman–giving her zero choice in the matter. "Hi baby." She cooed, moving from the hallway to the living room, focusing all of her attention on Lexa in an attempt to hold back the fury she was feeling at that demon being left alone with her.
