idk if it’s just me but from cars 2 and after that, I feel like mater and Lightning’s friendship is kinda toxic. Not hardcore where it’s totally obvious, but where lightning is always portrayed as selfish when he disagrees with mater, and if he doesn’t do what mater wants then he’s a jerk/bad friend. Yes there were times where lightning was an asshole to mater, but he shouldn’t have to do everything he says

Ngl, as much as I love these two (esp in cotr) I kinda have to agree.
In Cars 2, I feel like there's no genuine conclusion to their friendship problem. Like yeah, McQueen was wrong for lashing out, but Mater also kinda ignored him when he was following Holley's orders.
Though, idk if Holley did some weird radio thing that blocked out Lightning's voice. I'm no scientist, but I do know enough to know that that's not how it works. If anything it should've done that telephone thing, where you're able to listen in to a different telephone call that's present in the same house but I degress.
Anyway, even earlier in the movie, Mater felt a bit too- I'm not sure how to describe it, but it was like he was desperate for Lightning's attention. Which ngl, strikes me as odd, mainly because he was a great wingman for Sal and Lightning in the first movie.
I can understand that he felt a bit left out, though I suppose the lack of context for this change in personality from the first movie played a part in why I was puzzled by his demeanor, even when I first watched Cars 2 as a young kid.
I have to go rewatch cars 2 before I can fully add my complete thoughts into this.
So anyway,
In COTR, I'm glad that their friendship has developed, they seem to be on better terms, like how they both genuinely care and support each other and what not, though there are sometimes where I do feel like Lightning is often seen as wrong when he's not. You shouldn't have to always agree with your best friend.
I'm opening this discussion for anyone who has any insight they would like to add. I'm no expert when it comes to topics like this, so feel free to add your two cents.
As for mine, I do think that their friendship was kinda toxic in Cars 2, though overtime it has gotten better. Still needs work, but they seem to be getting there.
