89dove: architecture

I’m going to be making limited edition full size 500mm x 700mm large prints of this drawing, along with some smaller A4 and A3 prints of certain sections of the city. Get in touch if you’re interested! :)

The entire extents of San Marco, San Polo + Dorsodoro (to the edge of my paper anyway) has now been drawn. The next couple of sessions will see the shadows and details added to each building to complete the drawing, before finishing and framing.

Continuing the drawing onto it’s fourth day, focussing on Piazza San Marco and Doge’s Palace. This is one of my favourite parts of the city. Although it’s incredibly busy and touristy, the arcade on the Doges Palace and the scale of the tower are incredible.

Day three was spent studying the areas in the North - San Polo, and across the Grand Canal in to San Marco. This image shows the grid of San Polo being sketched, with the half of San Marco being completed with shadows and hatches. The next session will move eastwards across Rio de S. Luca, towards Piazza San Marco. 

Continuing with The Rooves of Venice project, day two was spent working through the south side of the Grand Canal - with this image looking at the areas around the Gallerie dell’ Accademia. 

The Rooves of Venice drawing has begun! I spent a couple of hours on Day 01 of the drawing, concentrating on the southern part of the image, which contains Dorsoduro, the Basilica + Tadao Ando’s Punta della dogana.

I’m starting a new project with this A5 test illustration; The Rooves of Venice. The project began in 2014 when I represented Scotland alongside other architects and designers in Rem Koolhaas’s Venice Biennale. I was fascinated by the unique grain and patterns of the city. The project is a large scale drawing, illustrating the ideas of the city in pen and ink.

Whilst in New York I visited a lot of places, sketching where I had a moment. Here are some of the sketch studies carried out, with digital colour added to a couple.

Travels

I visited one of my favourite cities late last year; Paris. I studied the Pompidou Centre facade from the it’s public square, recording my thoughts in my sketchbook.

I took my sketchbook along to Rivington Place, designed by London based architect David Adjaye. I studied the facade and it’s relation to it’s tight East London context.

My axonometric drawing was exhibited in another exhibition in London along with some really nice work, in Morgan’s showroom, Clerkenwell.

I carried on my sketch study work, with a study of the concrete exterior and section of Denys Lasdun’s National Theatre in London. Drawing was carried out by hand, with some colour being added digitally to a couple of the sketches.

The building site for my first built project, Stone Bench, was accidentally captured in this aerial photograph of St Paul’s Cathedral. The tiny building site can be located just next to the spire, on the Cheapside pavement.
