My opinions on the Ben Hwa hate that I’ve seen as a Ben Hwa fan.
Not my typical type of stuff on tumblr but honestly I want to talk about the Ben Hwa hate on every platform as it doesn’t ever seem to die down and people continue doing it.
I think the Ben Hwa hate exists for multiple reasons that people are not willing to acknowledge
1.) people don’t like their object being so explicit. If they were any other object and did the same actions I don’t think people would hate them as much as they do. They also for a while a being of shock factor for streamers a lot of over exaggerated reactions happened because people directed them to the draw and to meet Ben Hwa
2.) they’re not a white man and as much as people don’t want to admit it that absolutely plays a factor into the way people view them. It’s very obvious other characters with the same behaviour that are white men get treated drastically differently. Example I always use is trap Dorian Vs Ben Hwa. people love a shirtless sexy man. But it’s not okay when Ben Hwa is the same? Okay. Neither are a man but the same applies to people like Mac and Betty and how they can be sexual towards you and nobody bats an eye but people do when it comes to Ben Hwa. There is always hints of transphobia when it comes to people who are that genuinely hateful towards Ben Hwa.
3.) most of the fandom doesn’t like complex characters. Characters that call you out for your past behavior or are in any way combative or call you out. You want someone who’s easy to love. Ben Hwa is far too complex and people don’t have empathy for them in the slightest and I have witnessed that.
Now this post is not targeted towards people who are simply uncomfortable with Ben Hwa. This is targeted at people that are genuinely hateful for NO REASON.
There is a world out there where they could have been more popular in the fandom as they have good energy, they’re confident and sexy and are conventionally attractive. And in some world that would have been more appealing to people.
