it all started with lunch break at school.
you were eating lunch together like you usually do whenever seongje actually bothers to even come to school, that is. you had been ranting about something stupid your friend had said the other day for a good 10 minutes now, in between sentences, you had noticed that seongje hadn’t chimed in yet, which you found slightly weird because hes usually pretty active in conversations, he would ask where it happened, would leave a snarky comment about the ridiculous situation, but he sat in front of you silently, he was there, sure, but it didnt feel like he was mentally there, staring off at a spot somewhere behind your shoulder, it wasn’t anything too unusual, he’s capable of being quiet sometimes, so, naturally, you brushed it off and continued speaking, and in the end you asked him a question, he didn’t answer, so you repeated yourself, and finally, he looked up at you.
"what do you mean 'what'? did you listen to anything i said?" you were a tiny bit annoyed now, clearly you’ve been talking to wall for the past 15 minutes.
"fuckin...yes, yes i was listening." now he too seemed annoyed, so, naturally, you decided not to push him any farther, maybe he just had a bad day, you convinced yourself.
the next day, you had called him late at night, its normal for you and seongje to call for hours on end at night, talking about absolutely everything until the clock strikes 2am, and it started off like that, kinda. you talked about your day for a minute or two, and when seongje was fairly quiet on the other end, maybe even slightly dismissive, you were confused.
"hey, seongje, you tired?" you asked suddenly after almost a minute of silence, voice hesitant.
"yeah." his answer was dry, short, it wasn’t very seongje-like.
"do you...want me to let you sleep?"
you could feel your heart clench the second he said that, is he mad at me? you thought. "yeah...okay, I’ll see you tomorrow then."
"mhm, love you too." he muttered dryly before hanging up, and you were left staring at your phone, wondering whats made him act so weird, you knew for a fact you hadn’t done anything to upset him lately, so why is he acting like this?
on the third day, you had dragged seongje with you while hanging out with your group of friends, you knew he wasn’t the biggest fan of your friend group, but usually, he tolerates them and mostly just talks to you, maybe sometimes chimes in if one of your friends says something actually worth talking about. now you were all sitting on a bench at a court, it was pretty late, but none of you were really tired, everyone was joking around and having fun, you had also bought some soju, so some of you were a little tipsy. one of your friends made a remark about how seongje was a little quiet, it was all in good faith, really, your friend was only trying to lighten him up a little, but clearly, he didn’t take it well.
"say that again and see what fucking happens, yeah?" he didnt yell, didnt show too much emotion either, he was eerily calm when he said it, but because of his reputation, everyone immedietely went dead silent, and you cocked your head to him in the matter of a second, a slightly worried look in your eyes, because this wasnt seongje, yeah, he has a short temper, he fights people for fun, he gets angry if anyone looks at him for too long, but this wasn’t right, he knew this friend of yours, hes never snapped at her like that, shes made jokes about him before, and he always brushes it off or lets out a humorous scoff, but clearly he wasn’t taking any shit today.
your friend let out a nervous laugh "i was just joking, im sorry..."
"yeah? well you’re bad at making jokes then, anyone ever tell you that?" he let out a scoff, like he was making fun of her, trying to humiliate her for a simple joke, and that was all you needed to hear before grabbing his arm and dismissing the two of you to your confused and slightly spooked friends. you didn’t mention it to him later on the walk home, purely because you didnt want to nag him, and also because the silence between you two was gruelling, but on the inside, you were worried, to say the least.
when the third day rolled around, last night you had asked him to hangout, but he claimed baekjin was making him work longer that day, so he couldn’t, you were suspicious of it to say the least, but yet again, you didn’t push it, so your initial plans of hanging out with him today were ruined. when you woke up that morning, you had put on a random hoodie you had laying on the ground that may or may not have been seongjes. you threw on some shorts and went downstairs, luckily your parents weren’t home today, so you had the house to yourself. you poured yourself a bowl of cereal, sat down at the counter and pulled out your phone, you took a bite of your cereal, and clicked on seongjes contact, you were hesitant to write him a text, but despite youre hesitance you decided to send him a text anyways, it was just a simple "goodmorning <3" and after you sent it, you let out a sigh, put your phone down and continued eating. after about an hour, you were still sat at the counter, scrolling on your phone, and when you still hadn’t gotten a text back, you decided to check your messages with him again, and to your surprise, you were left on read for almost an hour now, and your patience with him was running thin, your thoughts raced faster than your brain could keep up with. is he cheating on me? did i do something? is he mad at me? do i not matter anymore? you quickly snapped yourself out of it, and you decided to just take a nap and try to sleep it off, and for the rest of the day, he didnt answer you, and you didn’t send him any more texts.
it was officially the fourth day, and yet again, you and seongje hadn’t planned anything, you were still left on read, and convinced he was mad at you, so again, you didn’t push him, afraid to make things worse. it was late at night at this point, you had been laying in bed doomscrolling for the whole day, so you decided to atleast get some fresh air by taking a quick trip to the convenience store to buy a late night snack, but what you didn’t know, was that while you were picking the snacks you wanna eat for tonight, seongje had a hell of a day, he’d fought si eun, ended up with a fucked up foot, had to visit the police station, then got dragged into the union warehouse by baekjin, and had his loyalty questioned by baekjin, but what stood out was that baekjin hadn’t asked if seongje was okay, hadn’t asked if his foot was okay, hadn’t asked if he’s seriously hurt, no, all baekjin cared about was if he had snitched on baekjin to the police, and that’s what pissed him off so much, because he shouldn’t care, he wasnt the kind of guy to show his emotions or constantly need someone to ask him if he’s okay, but deep down, he craved it, and over the last few days, he had slowly been realising that no one really cares about him, and this encounter definetelly didn’t help him think otherwise. now he’s limping his way home, his vision slightly blurry without his glasses, his whole face and body sore, he hated how he felt right now, the feeling of loneliness and hopelessness. the last thing he was expecting was to run into his girlfriend, Y/N.
your brows furrowed the moment you saw your boyfriend, you first glanced at his face, bruises, normal, no glasses? unusual, then you looked down and saw his foot, wrapped in a bandage, and you knew something was wrong, seongje doesnt get this hurt in fights, he usually comes out with a few bruises and a scratch, yeah, but not his glasses missing and his foot ruined.
"seongje. why didn’t you answer my text? where have you been?" you asked simply, and when he didn’t answer that, you asked another question "did something happen?"
he let out a heavy, almost annoyed sigh, placing his hands in his pockets as he moved his gaze to the sky, like he didnt even wanna look at your right now, an exasparated look on his face, you thought surely hes mad at you or atleast someone else with that expression on his face. "why do you care, huh? im fine." his tone was cold, annoyed, he definetelly wasn’t fine.
"your clearly not fine!" you were starting to get annoyed, why couldn’t he just talk to you?
"i said, im fucking fine!" he was yelling now, and you couldn’t help but flinch, you couldn’t remember the last time seongje actually yelled at you, but you also couldn’t help but notice the crack in his voice at the last word, and before you knew it, a tear ran down his cheek, he was quick to cover his face with his hand and wipe it away muttering a curse under his breath, but you stood frozen for a good 3 seconds, the thing was, you’d never seen seongje cry before, even as his girlfriend, it was completely unheard of, but even then, you were quick to snap out of it and hesitantly pull him into a hug, it wasn’t quick, it was slow enough that he could pull away if he wanted to, but he didn’t. he wasnt full on sobbing, ofcourse not, this was still seongje after all, but you definitely heard a few sniffles come out of him, so you rubbed his back gently, trying your best to comfort him.
"dont." you heard him say right after another sniffle.
"dont what?" you asked, confused, glancing at him.
"dont look at me." he said firmly, but the softness in his voice was there.
"okay, i won’t ." is all you said, and then looked away, instead moving your gaze to your hand that was running through his hair.
you stayed like that for a while, and after seongje calmed down a little, you pulled away from the hug slightly.
"fuck, this is stupid." he muttered while wiping away any tears left on his face.
"no, no its not." you corrected immedietelly.
you two had already started walking home, it was quiet, but it was a comfortable silence, even though seongje felt embarassed, deep deep down, he was pleased, because this was his confirmation that someone did care about him, that someone wanted to know if hes okay, wanted, him to be okay.
"you wanna talk about what happened?" you asked suddenly, you didnt wanna force it out of him, you wanted to make it feel like a choice.
you didnt push any farther, but you took his hand in yours, letting him know that you’re here, that you care, that he can talk to you about anything he wants, and he didn’t pull away, and after a few minutes of simply walking in silence together, finally, he brings it up himself.
"got in a bad fight." he finally let out with a heavy sigh, like he was holding it in for a while.
"yeah. baekjin didn’t even ask if i was okay, went straight to questioning me." he tried not to show it, but you could hear the hurt in his voice.
his breath hitched, because there it was, the question he so desperately wanted to hear from someone atleast once in his life. "no, not fucking really" he said with a scoff.
you let out a soft hum at that, tightening your hold on his hand, and you didn’t push the conversation farther, letting the comfortable silence take over once again. after a little more walking, you finally got to his house, and before he walked inside, you put your hand on his arm, before pulling out a bag of chips and a drink, which you had initially bought for yourself, but clearly he needed it more than you.
"this is yours." he muttered, not taking it from you and looking at you with a raised brow.
"its okay, i bought more than this."
"if you say so..." he muttered before taking the items from you, letting your hands brush against eachother.
"ill see you tomorrow, seongje." you muttered with a subtle smile before leaning in to kiss the corner of his mouth.
"yeah, bye, i love you." is the last thing he said before finally walking in his house, closing the door behind him and letting out a long relieved sigh.
he sat down at the dinner table, putting the drink and bag of chips down onto the table, and he stared at the items for a good moment, because even after how mean and dry he was to you, how much of an asshole he was, you still cared, you still listened and you still gave him a snack that you’d bought for yourself, and so suddenly, he didnt feel so alone.
