DECEMBER 31, 2016 - 366/366 THIS COFFEE URN
When I started this project a year ago, I never wanted it to be about âthings,â despite being called â366 Things I Love.â So over the past 366 days, Iâve rarely photographed something I own, unless it was to talk about the sentimental value that object held.
This coffee urn belonged to a dear friend of ours, Jack Edwards, who passed away in 2013. The urn came from England, and inside is stamped âW Baily, Grace Church St., London.â Jack liked beautiful things, and after he died we inherited a number of his belongings. We only bring out this urn once a year, but when we do, I always think of Jack, and the many stories he told us about his fabulous life.
I didnât know how to end this project, and felt a lot of pressure to produce an âepicâ photo to go out on a high note. But instead of an amazing landscape, or a classic Minneapolis building, Iâm presenting this photo, and my memories of one of the dead. New Yearâs Eve is a great time for us to look back and reflect: to remember all that weâve lost, and appreciate all that we still have.Â
Should old acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should old acquaintance be forgot, And old lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne, We'll take a cup of kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
