Planes, Trains & Automobiles, French lobby card. 1987
Happy 79th, Eugene Levy.
With John Candy, Dan Aykroyd, Rosemary Radcliffe, and Gilda Radner in 1974.
Wilburys, Sideburys, and John Candy in 1990.
“We were trying to make a Wilbury movie. We were going to film all the songs, it was all ready — we had the studios booked, we had director David Leland, and every song filmed in a different location. Unfortunately Roy died, but I’d still like to do it sometime.” - George Harrison VOX Magazine (September 1992) Q: “When the Wilburys first came out, there was talk of a video for every single song. Is that still a viable project? Tom Petty: “It was all written and prepared to go when the first record came out, and we were on our way to England to start it. The last talk I had with Roy was two days before he died and that’s one thing we discussed. We planned to work with Michael Palin and Eric Idle and I hope it all gets done one way. […] We came up with [the Wilbury names] ourselves [see posts from May 6th and 7th]. [For Vol. 1] I was named after the father, Charles Truscott Wilbury, who was sort of a drunk and a womanizer. If the movie had been made you’d see we have quite a bit of Wilbury history. We even have a family tree that goes way back to Egyptian times.” - The Hard Report (1989) The “Wilbury Twist” music video features cameos from Eric Idle, John Candy, Whoopi Goldberg, and more (link to video in today’s story). More about the “Wilbury Twist”: “[The Wilbury Twist] has been in the family a long time. A great uncle, Chubby Wilbury used to sing The Wilbury Twist.”- Tom Petty, Traveling Wilburys Volume 3 Radio Special (1990) “I think [the Wilbury Twist] actually originated with the Saint Vitus dance back in medieval times. It even shows the footsteps.” - George Harrison, ibid “The first verse was me just trying to make George and Jeff laugh. And I don’t know where the idea for a twist song came from, and maybe that was George. And then he got carried away with that song and it really got pretty funny. Even had a chart made up, a dance chart. It was silly. And we liked things to be silly.” - Tom Petty, “The Making of ‘The Wilbury Twist,” Traveling Wilburys YouTube channel Some "Wilbury Twist" dance instructions in this older post...
