My angry rant on the theme of forgiveness in the finale! Spoilers ahead!
(Disclaimer: I'm still in the process of formulating my big opinion, so these are just thoughts and emotions that are probably subject to change.)
First, as to our ineffable husbands and how I'm dissatisfied with how the finale handled their relationship.
I really had hope when it started off not immediately forgiving Aziraphale and trying to give them time to process and talk. And then- then you realise that all of their conversations are just Aziraphale explaining himself and not apologizing for any of his actions. And while that is generally in character, it's not what I wanted after the huge deal that was the s2 ending. In general I think in this finale Aziraphale is being increasingly demanding while never realising the error of his ways. Which is a shame because that's the main thing I wanted after s2!!! So as much as I love his stubborn, sassy ways, I really needed them to have that talk. Not just to explain, but to. Say sorry. For hurting each other. Mostly Zira to Crowley, but the other way too. And let them have that goddamn kiss! Or a hug! Or whatever, don't, but at least give me a proper confession?? Why did god have to be involved? I didn't want for Aziraphale to confess by saying something to God and Crowley not reacting to it! Like what??? You're really giving me nothing??? Oh. Okay.
Moving on, I think this forgiveness theme was greatly underutilized (or like, not utilized at all) to the point of being completely unnecessary. It's only there to make Crowley and Aziraphale reconcile, but to me it feels cheap and wrong because it has no setup and no explanation. I see that Jesus was there because forgiveness is his whole ordeal but he didn't really do or forgive anything? In no way did he actually bring to attention that forgiveness is important and whatnot. The finale did NOTHING to justify that forgiveness is the solution to everything. You have Aziraphale practically demanding forgiveness from Crowley right after he forgives Michael - btw did that work? Not really? I don't know? What was it for? I think it didn't work since they still threw the book into the fire??? In the end, no one really needed or had reason to forgive anyone anything substantial; Crowley didn't forgive God for not answering/casting him down (and obviously shouldn't), God didn't forgive anything because they had nothing to forgive, Aziraphale attempted forgiveness but failed, Jesus - mind you forgiveness is his whole thing - didn't forgive anything to anyone. Is the takeaway that forgiveness only works if it's between you and your partner which you've hurt quite badly but you'll die together in a moment so you have to if you want to end it all on some kind of positive terms? Is this why Jesus died for absolutely nothing?
You know what would be fun? If Jesus maybe forgave humanity for hanging him on a cross and the other things. If the point was, that even the demons and angels were just trying to do their jobs (like Michael! Apparently she was trying to do her job? That's what she said after all) Maybe God / Jesus, as one of the triade, you know, the three who are one? the Jesus that should also be God? Should be the one to forgive her. I think it would be neat if he was the one to now forgive all the angels and demons, just as before he forgave humanity. We already have setup for this.
Forgiveness seems a really good main theme for this "season 3", as after s2, there really is a great deal of things to forgive. But forgiveness should never be demanded. It doesn't mean much if it wasn't given willingly. There is something to be said about a person loving someone so much they will give that forgiveness, but let me tell you, it makes Crowley look like an absolute lovesick angel (haha) and Aziraphale look really bad.
And then they didn't even make forgiveness a big thing in the ending? I thought it would be the main takeaway, Jesus and all, but as we know Jesus did nothing and the finale was about... loving humanity more than each other apparently, which I don't... I didn't think this show was about that? I thought it was about shades of gray and finding love despite your purpose, about people being their experiences rather than their assigned role, about a demon who secretly really liked humanity and an angel who was a little more selfish than he'd let himself think, and about these two idiots that had barely anything to do with these incredibly important events: they just always happened to be there. Yes, they did also love humanity a whole lot, but, umm, I think they meant the actual humanity they loved and not just the general idea of it. The food, the bookshop, the street, the plants, the car, the people they met. Not just a new idea of people with true free will. I also don't think Crowley's rage has ever been about humans not having free will? I thought it was more about angels not having it (the fact that he couldn't even ask questions) and the problems with the institutions of heaven and hell. I thought his problem was with the fact that it was all going to be annihilated at God's will. So great ending, having all of the humanity he knew be annihilated just for God to make a new universe in which they won't meddle. Great way to give up on a world and start anew instead of taking care of the one already created that they actually cared about.
I just thought they loved this universe specifically, the one they helped create, not the hypothetical idea of people.
Also I think it goes very much against the idea of forgiveness to get rid of the whole of heaven and hell just because the institutions worked as intended. This ending is, to me, very cruel. It throws the idea of forgiveness in just to do nothing with it and kill everyone that needed forgiving.
(Quick sidenote, did anyone else catch the little inconsistency of the Bentley somehow now being able to move through the cosmos, even though it was a big plot point in s1 of Crowley's imagination being the only thing that held it together through the fire? Annoyed me a little)
Anyway, I hope this was comprehensible, sorry if not.
i'm procrastinating cleaning the flat so i spent the past two hours doing this instead. i kept the tier names as default so you can decide yourself if you want any specific categories. have fun xoxo
