THE O.C. 3x25 — The Graduates

"who wasn't ... WHAT? since you seem to know everything that goes on in my head, go ahead. tell me exactly what you were about to say." wyatt wasn't sure he even wanted to hear her answer, scared she might be right. the truth was something the male often ran from, hoping to bury his head in the sand. anything but facing the truth. anything but hearing her size him up and read him in a way that he wished no one could. wyatt had always been scared for someone to SEE him - his flaws, his secrets. "maybe i just wanted someone who listened to me. didn't just put words in my mouth 24/7." the male crossed his arms, subconsciously closing himself off.

                    brows    drew    together    ,    the    fire    in    her    gaze    dimming    into    something    more    wounded    than    angry.    “    i’m    not    trying    to    fight    with    you,    ”    she    said    quietly,    the    words    catching    slightly    in    her    throat.    “    but    it’s    hard    ⎯⎯⎯    standing    here,    not    knowing    what    you’re    really    thinking.    you    trail    off    like    that,    and    i    fill    in    the    blanks    with    the    worst    parts    of    myself.    ”    her    voice    wavered,    but    she    held    his    gaze.    “    you    think    i    don’t    see    you,    wyatt    ?    ”    she    asked,    more    weary    than    angry.    “    i    always    did.    maybe    that’s    what    scared    you.    letting    someone    in,    letting    them    see    the    parts    you    work    so    hard    to    keep    hidden    …    that’s    never    been    easy    for    you.    i    know    that.    but    i    never    asked    you    to    be    perfect;    i    just    wanted    you    to    be    honest.    ”    she    brushed    a    hand    through    her    hair,    grounding    herself.    “    you    say    you    wanted    someone    who    listened,    ”    she    continued,    her    voice    softer    now.    “    i    was    there,    wyatt.    even    when    you    shut    down,    i    stayed.    i    waited.    i    hoped    you’d    let    me    in.    but    it    started    to    feel    like    nothing    i    did    was    enough.    like    you    wanted    someone    who    didn’t    ask    questions    ⎯⎯⎯    who    just    stood    there    quietly    and    smiled    while    you    disappeared    into    yourself.    that’s    not    love.    that’s    not    real.    ”

“    i    came    here    ‘cause    i    didn’t    know    what    else    to    do    ,    ”    he    said,    voice    quieter    now.    “    i    just    wanted    to    see    her.    to    make    sure    you    were    okay.    that    she    was    okay.    ”    he    exhaled,    frustration    curling    at    the    edges.    “    i    ain’t    here    to    play    house    or    mess    with    her    head.    i    know    i’m    a    stranger    to    her.    but    i’m    not    gonna    disappear    again.    i’d    never    break    her    heart.    never.    you    might    not    believe    it,    but    i    love    that    little    girl    more    than    i    ever    thought    i    could    love    anything.    i    swear    to    god,    andi    ⎯⎯⎯    i’d    die    before    i    let    her    down    again.    ”    his    voice    cracked    at    the    end,    but    he    didn’t    care.    let    her    see    him    raw.    let    her    see    how    wrecked    he    really    was.    maybe    then    she’d    know    it    had    never    been    pretend.

                             “     yep     …     still     as     creepy     down     here     as     it     was     last     year     .     ”    stating     the     obvious     ,     but     when     soles     hit     the     unruly     terrain     of     the     mountain’s     trail     ,     her     nose     is     upturned     .     doesn’t     want     to     be     a     prude     given     the     circumstance     ⎯⎯⎯     a     fight     leading     to     the     both     of     them     walking     in     stride     to     a     guest     cabin     ⎯⎯⎯     but     unable     to     shake     it     ,     fully     .     “     i     mean     ,     i     wouldn’t     say     it’s     my     fault     she     got     so     pissy     with     me     ,     ”     just     some     people     can’t     take     a     joke     .     complaining     nevertheless     ,     despite     aforementioned     friends     left     in     the     dust     while     her     boots     crunch     against     the     snow     .     never     the     one     at     fault     ,     kiera’s     diverting     responsibility     .     but     ,     still     wouldn’t     accept     the     nature     of     arrival     ,     the     cabin     itself     …     how     the     air     hit     her     skin     like     a     perfect     winter’s     night     .     (     it     helped     that’s     what     it     was     ,     sub     zero     temperatures     and     all     )     .     she’s     bunching     her     jacket     ,     torch     shining     in     every     direction     because     the     noises     she     hears     can’t     be     normal     ,     unless     she’d     track     it     down     to     paranoia     .     too     many     animals     ,     not     enough     light     .     while     trudging     ,     femme     takes     a     look     beyond     shoulder     ,     gazing     at     other     in     the     little     path     she     could     muster     .     “     you     really     should     be     thanking     me     ⎯⎯⎯     alone     time     in     our     friend’s     run     down     guest     cabin     ?     think     that’s     the     ultimate     night     out     here     .     ”     remaining     hopeful     ,     simmering     tensions     at     ease     for     a     moment     .     “     cute     date     ,     right     ?     ”

                             the     wind     cuts     sharp     as     they     round     the     bend     ,     snow     crunching     under     their     boots     like     bones     snapping     in     the     dark.     trees     loom     on     either     side     of     the     narrow     path     ⎯⎯⎯     twisted     things,     all     knotted     limbs     and     no     leaves,     as     if     they’ve     been     watching     too     long     and     started     to     rot     from     the     inside     out.     the     air     smells     like     pine     and     something     colder,     like     old     metal     or     wet     stone.     every     few     feet,     the     flashlight     stutters     in     kiera’s     hand,     and     she     mutters     about     dead     batteries     like     it’s     not     a     sign     from     the     universe.     she     trails     just     a     step     behind,     arms     hugged     tight     to     her     body,     chin     tucked     into     her     jacket.     “     okay,     i     know     i     agreed     to     this,     but     like     …     ”     she     whispers,     breath     visible     in     the     freezing     air,     “     this     already     feels     like     the     part     of     the     movie     where     the     dumbasses     go     missing     before     the     opening     credits.     ”     her     voice     is     joking,     but     thin     around     the     edges.     nervous     laughter     bubbles     up     as     she     glances     at     the     trees,     eyes     flicking     toward     the     shadows     between     trunks.     they     look     too     deep,     too     still.     “     seriously,     why     does     this     place     feel     way     creepier     than     last     year     ?     did     it     …     age     into     a     murder     site     or     something     ?     ”     the     cabin     comes     into     view,     just     barely     visible     through     the     foggy     dusk.     it     sits     like     a     dead     thing     swallowed     by     snowdrifts     ⎯⎯⎯     the     kind     of     place     you     whisper     around,     not     because     you're     being     polite,     but     because     it     might     hear     you.     the     windows     are     dark.     no     footprints.     no     lights.     just     them,     and     that     awful     silence     that     doesn’t     feel     empty     so     much     as     waiting.     she     exhales     sharply.     “     this     is     so     messed     up.     i     don’t     care     how     many     s’mores     they     owe     us     ⎯⎯⎯     banishing     us     to     this     dollar     store     slasher     film     set     is     straight     up     evil.     ”     still,     her     hand     brushes     against     kiera’s     as     they     walk,     just     barely.     on     purpose,     maybe.     a     comfort,     maybe.     or     a     reflex.     “     okay,     ”     she     says,     quieter     now.     “     if     we     get     murdered     out     here,     i     just     want     it     on     record     that     i     told     you     so.     ”     a     nervous     grin     curves     her     lips     as     she     finally     reaches     for     the     handle.     “     but     also     …     you     better     not     let     go     of     me     if     the     lights     go     out.     ”

"what you did to me really sucked ── like i should probably totally be kicking your ass right now."

                    “    i    know     ,    okay    ?    i    didn't    mean    for    it    to    go    down    like    that.    you    think    i    wanted    you    dragged    into    this    ?    ”

then    his    eyes    flick    to    the    living    room    window,    where    their    daughter’s    small    silhouette    peeks    cautiously    from    behind    the    curtain.    ryder’s    mouth    tightens,    a    grimace    barely    hidden    as    he    rubs    the    back    of    his    neck    like    he’s    trying    to    shake    off    old    ghosts.    “    i    wouldn’t    ⎯⎯⎯    no,    you’re    right.    i    won’t    do    this    in    front    of    her.    ”    his    boots    scrape    softly    on    the    worn    wooden    porch    as    he    shifts    his    weight,    the    sound    sharp    and    oddly    grounding    in    the    silence.    “    you    think    i    don’t    lie    awake    every    damn    night    ?    that    i    don’t    replay    every    moment,    every    word    between    us    ?    of    course    i    think    about    us.    ”    his    voice    catches,    cracked    and    ragged,    raw    enough    to    expose    how    much    those    nights    have    cost    him.    “    that    ...    that    never    stopped.    ”    his    jaw    clenches    tight,    knuckles    whitening    as    his    frustration    flickers    through    eyes    that    once    held    all    her    secrets,    now    shadowed    by    regret.    “    but    i    get    it    ⎯⎯⎯    thinking    about    us    didn’t    exactly    save    anyone.    hell,    maybe    it    just    tore    things    apart.    ”    he    spits    the    words    out    like    bitter    truth,    then    his    voice    softens    with    a    flicker    of    vulnerability.    “    sorry.    for    everything.    ”    ryder    breathes    hard,    like    he’s    been    running    long    and    far    just    to    stand    here.    his    fingers    run    through    his    hair,    disheveled,    and    he    looks    down    for    a    long    moment    before    meeting    her    eyes    again.    “    i    got    out    two    weeks    ago.    parole    board    said    i’d    done    my    time.    ”    his    voice    cracks    with    the    weight    of    that    admission,    the    ghost    of    a    hope    fading    and    returning.    “    i    tried,    andi.    god,    i    tried    to    write    you    ⎯⎯⎯    letters,    calls    ⎯⎯⎯    but    you    moved,    changed    your    number,    your    life.    ”    he    shrugs,    almost    bitter.    “    so    i    showed    up.    didn’t    know    if    you’d    let    me    stay    on    the    porch.    didn’t    know    if    you’d    even    let    me    stay    at    all.    ”    he    exhales    sharply,    eyes    searching    hers,    desperate    for    some    sign    that    maybe,    just    maybe,    this    old    ghost    still    has    a    place    in    her    world.

she'd been told, of course. that he was out, to be prepared mentally and emotionally for what could possibly come next — and she had. made a list of all the things he'd done, the way their child had grown up knowing nothing of the man that she resembled, but it hadn't been enough. the silence that met his request had little to do with the anger sera wanted to cling to and use to deny everything, turn back around and ignore anything that had anything to do with him. instead, she was weak as she always had been for ryder. hues drinking him in after so long, a distant memory suddenly materializing in front of her to become real. ‘ five minutes. ’ stupid to agree to it knowing how quickly he could break down her defenses, but there'd always been a part of her that'd wondered what would happen would he got out. where they could go from there, if they could, and unfortunately — she was still the woman that had stood in his corner no matter what, even to the detriment of herself. the handle turned, door opening enough for her form to slip out to join him on the patio, though not before closing the other door to block any view of him to the curious eyes sera knew would come peeking back around the corner once their child heard her step out. ‘ i'm glad you've got something lined up for yourself. ’

                    ryder    didn’t    speak    right    away.    he    looked    at    her    like    she    was    something    he    wasn’t    sure    he    deserved    to    see    again.    something    soft    in    his    jaw    clenched,    like    he    was    holding    back    more    than    words.    “    yeah,    ”    he    said    finally,    voice    low    and    rough    from    disuse    ⎯⎯⎯    or    emotion.    “    something    lined    up.    gotta    keep    my    hands    busy    or    my    mind’ll    eat    me    alive.    ”    he    glanced    down    at    his    shoes,    scuffed    and    cheap.    they    made    him    feel    sixteen    again    and    fifty    at    the    same    time.    “    i    thought    about    this    moment    for    years,    you    know    ?    sat    in    that    cell    picturing    what    i’d    say    to    you.    practiced    it.    over    and    over.    but    now    you’re    standin’    here,    and    i    can’t    remember    a    single    word    of    it.    ”    his    hands    rubbed    together    nervously.    “    i’m    not    going    to    stand    here    and    beg    you    to    forgive    me.    i    already    used    up    all    your    grace,    and    then    some.    you    held    me    down    longer    than    i    ever    had    a    right    to    expect.    ”    a    pause,    thick    and    heavy.    “    i    wasn’t    there    for    you.    wasn’t    there    for    her.    i    missed    all    of    it.    her    first    words,    her    first    steps.    school    plays.    bad    dreams.    i    don’t    get    those    years    back.    and    you    don’t    get    back    the    nights    you    cried    yourself    to    sleep    alone.    ”    he    swallowed    hard,    eyes    never    leaving    her    face.    “    i’m    not    here    to    make    it    right    with    talk.    i    just    ...    i    needed    to    see    you.    to    say    it    to    your    face.    that    i    was    wrong.    that    i    should’ve    been    better    ⎯⎯⎯    for    you,    for    her.    i    failed    both    of    you.    ”    he    exhaled    slowly,    a    tremor    in    his    chest.    “    if    even    one    part    of    you    still    gives    a    damn    ...    then    let    me    prove    it.    not    with    words.    i’m    done    talking.    let    me    show    you    by    doing.    by    staying.    by    not    fucking    running    this    time.    ”    his    voice    cracked    just    slightly.    “    if    five    minutes    is    all    you    got    for    me    …    i’ll    take    it.    i’ll    take    it    like    it’s    the    last    damn    thing    i’ll    ever    get.    because    it    might    be.    and    i    know    i    don’t    deserve    even    that    —    but    i’m    tryin’.    every    day.    i’m    tryin’.    and    if    you    ever    …    if    you    even    think    about    givin’    me    more    time    ⎯⎯⎯     i’ll    spend    every    second    earnin’    it.    ”

                    lifts    an    eyebrow     ,    a    slow    ,    almost    amused    smile    tugging    at    the    corner    of    her    mouth    ⸻    not    quite    bitter,    but    not    entirely    amused    either.    “    so    i’m    the    distraction    ?    ”    she    asks,    voice    light    but    edged.    “    smile    for    the    pictures,    charm    your    aunt,    keep    everyone    convinced    you’ve    still    got    it    all    together    ⸻    and    then    what    ?    slip    out    once    the    champagne’s    gone    flat    ?    ”    she    leans    back    in    her    chair,    arms    folding    over    her    chest,    posture    casual    but    guarded.    there’s    a    flicker    in    her    expression    ⸻    something    tired,    something    worn.    “    fine,    ”    she    says    with    a    shrug,    her    tone    laced    with    practiced    indifference.    “    i’ve    done    worse    favors    for    people    who    meant    less.    ”

‘ when you say it like that, it sounds crazy but ... yeah. ’ it'd been easier to brush off the times his parents had asked about sora with a flippant doing good or something else noncommittal, but when they'd asked if she would be at their usual bi - annual celebration — raja had panicked. he wasn't proud of it, the way his tongue had gotten tied and a lie spilled out rather than the truth, but it was too late to back out. ‘ i'll uh ... i'll pay you ! to make it worthwhile. ’

                    exhales    slowly    ,    the    kind    of    breath    that    feels    dragged    from    deep    in    her    chest,    her    jaw    tight    as    she    studies    him    like    she’s    bracing    for    impact.    “    fine.    i’ll    go,    ”    she    says,    the    words    low    and    level,    but    laced    with    quiet    steel.    then    her    hand    lifts,    fingers    trembling    slightly    as    she    begins    to    count    them    off.    “    but    there    are    rules.    ”    her    eyes    don’t    leave    his.    “    no    touching    unless    someone’s    watching.    no    late    night    walks    down    memory    lane.    and    absolutely    no    pretending    this    means    something    when    we’re    alone.    ”    each    word    lands    like    a    line    drawn    in    the    sand    ⸻    sharp,    deliberate,    necessary.    she    swallows    hard,    and    for    a    moment,    her    composure    falters    ⸻    a    flicker    of    something    raw    crossing    her    face    before    she    forces    it    back    down.    “    i’ll    play    my    part,    raja.    i’ll    smile,    i’ll    laugh,    i’ll    even    kiss    your    cheek    if    your    mom’s    looking.    ”    her    voice    softens,    but    not    with    warmth    ⸻    with    the    ache    of    remembering    what    that    used    to    feel    like.    “    but    the    second    this    starts    to    feel    real    again    ?    ”    a    beat.    her    gaze    flickers.    “    i’m    out.    ”

                    scoffs     ,    rolling    her    eyes    and    brushing    it    off    with    a    sharp    shake    of    her    head.    “    i    had    it    handled.    ”    her    tone    is    defensive,    but    there’s    an    edge    of    uncertainty    hiding    beneath    the    bravado.    she    shifts    her    weight,    trying    to    act    casual,    but    her    fingers    tighten    around    her    glass,    betraying    her    nerves.    after    a    brief    pause,    she    sighs,    the    walls    she’s    built    cracking    just    a    little.    “    but    ...    thanks    for    asking.    ”    her    voice    softens,    almost    embarrassed    now,    as    if    she    wasn’t    used    to    anyone    actually    caring    enough    to    notice.

                    doesn’t    flinch     ,    doesn’t    look    away.    just    stares    at    her    for    a    beat    too    long,    like    she’s    deciding    whether    to    speak    or    run.    and    then,    quietly    but    without    hesitation,    she    says:    “    maybe    you    kissed    me    because    we    were    drunk.    ”    her    voice    is    steady,    eyes    locked    on    hers.    “    but    i    kissed    you    because    i    wanted    to.    ”    the    words    hang    in    the    air,    fragile    and    terrifying.    she    swallows,    heart    in    her    throat.    “    and    i’d    do    it    again.    sober.    ”

"i have no idea what you're on about." he feigns oblivion, shoulders rising and falling into a shrug. "if anyone's pushing the other away, it's you."

                    stands    there    for    a    moment     ,    frozen     ,    like    her    body’s    waiting    for    her    heart    to    catch    up.    her    hands    tremble    at    her    sides,    and    she    clenches    them    into    fists    to    stop    the    shaking.    it    doesn’t    help.    “    maybe    i    have    been    pushing    you    away,    ”    she    says    finally,    her    voice    soft    but    laced    with    something    raw    ⸻    not    anger,    not    bitterness,    just    bone    deep    exhaustion.    her    eyes    find    his,    searching    for    something    ⸻    recognition,    regret,    anything    ⸻    but    his    face    is    still    unreadable.    that    hurts    more    than    she    thought    it    would.    she    takes    a    slow    breath,    lips    parted    like    she    might    stop    herself,    but    the    words    come    anyway.    they    have    to.    “    but    only    because    every    time    i    get    close,    you    disappear.    ”    her    gaze    drops    to    the    floor    as    she    wraps    her    arms    around    herself,    a    fragile    kind    of    armor.    her    next    words    are    barely    above    a    whisper,    the    kind    you    say    when    you’re    trying    not    to    cry    ⸻    or    when    you    know    it    won’t    matter    if    you    do.    “    and    i’d    rather    be    the    one    leaving    than    the    one    left    behind    again.    ”

the ability to form words escapes her, brown-eyed gaze meeting hers for a brief moment before it lapses. "does that mean there's something here?" she dares to ask, the question one she's been dying to ask. "do you... still think about me?"

                    flinches    like    the    words    struck    something    raw    inside    her     ,    eyes    dropping    as    her    breath    stutters.    for    a    moment,    she    doesn’t    speak    ⸻    just    folds    her    arms    across    her    chest    like    she’s    bracing    for    impact.    “    i    wish    i    didn’t,    ”    she    says    finally,    her    voice    cracking.    a    hollow    laugh    slips    out,    bitter    and    thin.    “    god,    i    wish    i    could    forget.    but    yeah    ...    i    think    about    you.    more    than    i    should.    ”    her    gaze    falls    to    the    floor,    shoulders    tightening.    “    and    every    time    i    do,    it    hurts    like    hell.    ”    

sadé didn’t flinch. didn’t blink. she just smiled ⸻ like someone who’d already won the argument two minutes before it started. she leaned back in her chair, letting the silence extend just long enough to make it uncomfortable, to make it intentional. then she let her pen drop to the table with a soft... clack. “cute,” she said. “real fucking cute, cleopatra.” her gaze never left the other girl’s face, eyes beaming like she’d just found a new toy she was only half-interested in breaking. “see, it’s always the overachievers who think they know so fucking much.” she leaned forward, elbows on the table now, her tone lowering just enough to feel personal. “you think just ‘cause you memorize the syllabus front to back and sleep with your planner under your pillow, you’ve got the moral high ground? baby, chill.” a moment of silence, following a blink. “nobody’s cheating. i just know how to finesse.” then, like the whole thing bored her again, she exhaled, picked her pen back up, and flicked her eyes down at the textbook without ever reading it. “but go the fuck off,” she added, like an afterthought, one corner of her mouth curling. “wouldn’t want all that GPA stress to go to waste..." finally, she took a deep breath. "if you're in love with me, just say dat," she said teasingly.

                    jaw    locked    tight     ,    the    muscles    ticking    like    a    warning.    she    didn’t    move    at    first    ⸻    just    sat    there,    spine    straight,    hands    knotted    in    her    lap    like    she    was    physically    restraining    herself    from    saying    the    first    version    of    whatever    was    threatening    to    explode    out    of    her.    then    she    exhaled,    sharp    and    clipped,    a    breath    that    sounded    like    it    hurt    on    the    way    out.    “    you’re    unbelievable,    ”    she    said,    voice    low    but    laced    with    heat.    her    eyes    snapped    to    sadé’s,    and    this    time    she    didn’t    bother    to    soften    the    glare.    “    i    don’t    give    a    damn    about    your    so    -    called    finesse.    i    care    that    you    treat    effort    like    it’s    something    to    be    embarrassed    about.    like    giving    a    shit    makes    you    pathetic.    like    trying    automatically    makes    someone    beneath    you.    ”    she    leaned    forward,    resting    her    elbows    on    the    table,    and    when    she    spoke    again,    her    voice    was    calm    ⸻    too    calm    ⸻    but    something    sharp    simmered    underneath.    “    i    work    my    ass    off    ⸻    not    because    i’m    trying    to    be    better    than    you,    but    because    i    have    to.    because    if    i    slack    off    for    even    a    second,    it    all    goes    to    shit.    you    wouldn’t    get    that.    you’ve    never    had    to.    so    don’t    stand    there    and    talk    down    to    me    like    you’ve    figured    life    out    just    because    you    can    charm    your    way    through    a    pop    quiz.    ”    there    was    a    beat    ⸻    just    a    breath    of    silence    ⸻    before    she    added,    drier    this    time,    “    don’t    come    at    me    with    that    ‘if    you’re    in    love    with    me’    shit.    this    ain’t    about    you,    okay    ?    maybe    one    day    you’ll    realize    charm    won’t    carry    you    forever.    until    then,    keep    running    your    mouth.    ”

“why would i be jealous? you can flirt with whoever you want. i don’t care.”
