Like, it was turned into an Orthodox church dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Byzantine era, then when it was taken over by Latin rule during the fourth crusade it was a catholic church, then under the Ottomans it was turned into a mosque. Somewhere during that time Lord Elgin looted it and stole many sculptures, then it was partly destroyed by the Venetians. Morosini later tried to remove sculptures from the western pediment, but they fell and shattered during the attempt.

After the Greek revolution, the acropolis functioned as a symbol of Greek identity, the modern Greek state removed many medieval, Frankish and Ottoman additions and demolished the Ottoman mosque and other later structures. They also begun excavations and restorations, which last to this day.

And during the nazi occupation of Greece, (where the Acropolis had massive symbolic and propagandistic value, since the nazis thought they were the inheritents of European culture, including ancient Greek) two nineteen year olds, Manolis Glezos and Apostolos Santas took down the swatstika flag from the Acropolis, which has marked one of the most famous acts of resistance against the nazis.

Today, it is a world heritage site.
