Game Development Ask Meme!
Game Development Ask Meme!
1. What got you into game making?
I've been creating games in RPG Maker since 2K3. Being a writer, I always wanted to see my characters come to life through a game.
2. How long have you been working on your game?
My most recent project? Only a few months.
3. Why did you start making your project?
It's a gift for a friend. Other projects are fan projects or personal endeavors.
4. Do you have any previous projects you've never released?
“Everyone Dies” had a game once. Also, I've lost several drafts of “Eve of Perception”, too.
5. How do you come up with game ideas?
They're fan works or novel related.
6. How much planning have you done for your game?
I usually have a really strong idea beforehand. For my most recent project initial planning took about an hour and everything else was added as it was being created. For my personal project, for example, I have notebooks filled with skills and states and weapons and all that just so I don't keep losing them.
7. What do you focus on most when you make a game? (eg. gameplay, graphics, music...)
The gameplay and then the story.
8. What's your favorite part of game development? Least favorite part of game development?
My favorite part is writing, making icons, and mapping. I really hate bug testing and balancing.
9. What have been some of your biggest obstacles working on the game so far?
For my current project I am in a slump with three weeks left to complete it. It's tough to force myself to work on something; anything.
10. Who's your favorite character you've made so far?
I really like this dog character I have in my current project. I don't usually do animal characters.
11. Which character is/was the hardest to write?
In my current work the main character, the main story, is the hardest thing. That's never been very clear, but it's more of an exploration based, semi-open world game. In my main project... I guess the main character there as well. Matthew/Levi is pretty complicated.
12.What's the most important aspect of your game (e.g. gameplay, battle system, story)?
Story always (with an exception to the current project, which I'm focusing on gameplay more)
13. What are some goals you have for the game?
Current: I just want the friend to be happy and enjoy the game. This is a huge fear for me.
Other: This is going to be a massive scale game. I would love it to go commercial, but that probably won't happen due to the systems I have included which aren't very copyright friendly.
14. What do you want to avoid in your game? (boring plot, bad gameplay, wonky controls, etc.)
Please don't let my games be boring or too difficult...
15. What's your favorite part of your project so far? (or the part that makes you the proudest!)
That I've gotten as far as I have. That's a huge feat for me. It's almost always just me working on my games so it's a lot of work by myself.
16. What are you expecting upon your game's release?
Huge backlash from trolls, for my current project. I'm dreading the comments; but I will do my best to avoid them. What really matters is what the friend thinks.
17. If you had the money and time to do anything you want with your game, what would you put into it?
Custom graphics. This is always my top thing I would do.
18. Do you have scheduled times where you work on your game, or do you just do it when the mood strikes you?
For current project, I have to work on it every day because it has a due date. Otherwise these are hobbies.
19. What are your sources of inspiration? Any particular music, books, anime or anything else you'd like to share?
I can't say or I've already said.
20. What's your definition of "game"?
A good story with fun gameplay.
21. What kind of games do you play in your spare time?
JRPGs, especially old school ones, and horror survival.
22. Is game making a career or a hobby for you? Something else?
I wish it was a career, but that won't happen. So definetly a hobby.
23. Do you plan on selling your game? Why or why not?
No, not unless I change the copyrighted elements.
24. Are there any other forms of media you'd like to see your game in? (eg. comics, books, movies, tv shows, zoetropes, bathroom wall graffiti, etc.)
Not my current project, but for my personal project it will be a novel as well. I wouldn't mind a movie, either.
25. What other games would you like to make in the future?
I am planning a Silent Hill 2 fan game.
26. What are some cool tutorials you've found?
Anything by Sumrndude (I butchered that), Echo607, Team Unpro, or Driftwood Gaming.
27. Got any advice for other developers?
Have a clear goal and mind and work towards it. Don't put your game down for weeks or months. You'll lose all interest. Also, please be original, even if it's a fan work!
