“24 Karrot Co.” Nathaniel Kent Animation Test #1
I finally got to finish this animation test for Nathaniel Kent laughing. This test is just before Punsy’s in the animation so I thought it would be fitting. Currently my goal is to get as many of the short shots done before the end of this semester as possible.

“24 Karrot Co.” Punsy Animation Test #1
After what has felt like a millenium of storyboard panels, I’ve finally animated something in relation to the story. Of course, it’s not cleaned up but that’s because I’m only planning on getting as much rough animation that I can get done before the end of the semester. Cleaning up and making it beautiful can come later. :)
“24 Karrot Co.” Punsy Face Animation [WIP]
During the time I was near finishing the storyboard, I made the decision to animate SOMETHING in order to warm up my animating hand for this story/thesis animation. This is the result of that time spent.
My story is mainly character-based, dialogue-driven, and expression-intensive so I felt in order to prep myself, animating the mouth and face would prove important.

“24 Karrot Co.” Storyboard Snippets #1

“24 Karrot Co.” Nathaniel’s Bunny Reference
Nathaniel’s form was merely formed from imagination and on the idea of what a rabbit looks like. I found it intriguing to look into what type of breed Nate resembles most. I came to the conclusion that Nathaniel is a Blanc de Hotot rabbit (seen above). However, this breed is apparently a medium-sized one, so I do imagine Nate being larger but just as slim.
“24 Karrot Co” Punsy’s Bunny Reference
Although Punsy was made to just simply be a cartoon rabbit, I felt it would be interesting to look at what kind of rabbit he most resembles, purely out of curiousity. I wasn’t very knowledgable of rabbit breeds (and I’m still not) but I consider Punsy to be close to a Holland Lop (in images above) in physical appearance (all except size, obviously). In weight and size, however, Punsy would probably be as large as a Flemish Giant (in link).
Edit: After exploring a bit in the world of rabbit breeds, I realized that the French Lop (in link) is probably the best breed to fit Punsy overall, despite the sandy fur color (which the Holland Lop suits best).
“24 Karrot Co.” Film Noir References
In the process of making this film, I’ve been continuously gathering resources for how I’d like to portray the film noir essence of it. Two big movies I watched were “Casablanca” (although not “film noir”, it has the same lighting style) and “Double Indemnity”. Story-wise, “Double Indemnity” was obviously closer to what I wanted my story to feel like (of course, without the femme fatale and “the twist” [as much as I’d love to add one, I don’t have time to do that for my Senior Thesis Animation.]) As of now, despite being in the “Production” phase, I still continue to look for reference to guide me along in my work.

My Original Plan: Animation Schedule
According to this image, by this Sunday I should be finishing the end of my animatic stage...
I’ve completed my script and I’m currently starting said animatic stage due to a few adjustments to the script and storyboard composition. But, it’s alright. Better to be caught up in animatic stage than to still be staring at the script attempting to cut it even further. Besides, I’ve made the decision to make my storyboard also my animatic. When I make storyboards usually, I include many sections in between that eventually come to look more like an animatic anyway. I believe this is just how my brain processes storyboarding. (And no, there’s no physical animation in the animatic yet...mainly moments where the movement in the image. A board-o-matic, honestly.)
My third voice actor for minor characters shouldn’t be left out. His voice is incredibly nice as well!Â
Now, on to the News....
“24 Karrot Co.” Original Storyboard Moments
This script for this thesis film has been adjusted and changed about 5-6 times. Because of so, my original idea for my film ended up being too long for what I can do in my Senior year alone (10 minutes of film to be exact). So, the FINAL script was trimmed to be 4 pages long and the storyboard has been cut down and changed by quite a bit so that I’m not straining myself to complete this animation. These are just tidbits of the original story idea.
What is Nathaniel’s Backstory?
Nathaniel was originally a pet to a human family (in this world, bunnies are the first animals become anthropomorphic; humans still walk the earth but are coexisting with this phenomenon). The Kent Family, a very disgustingly rich family, raised Nathaniel, but not for very long. As time passed, the children and adults grew bored and abused him heavily, in multiple ways. (Don't let the cute flower in Nate’s ear fool you! It’s not clipped in, it’s sewn and stapled in.) Of course, over time Nathaniel's mind was damaged.Â
Strangely, the entire Kent Family vanished one day (though no one cared since they were awful, manipulative people) and Nathaniel decided to take over the mansion. He began taking over his “parent”’s possessions, remaining wealth, as well as adopted their narcissism.Â
He became the embodied amalgamation of his "family", even keeping their last name in his given name, “Nathaniel Kent”.

Why are there humans and bunnies, but no other anthropomorphic animals in the world of “24 Karrot Co.”?
I’ve been asked this question plenty of times. If I were to place it in blunt terms, I’d say “because I enjoy that concept”. There are many stories that exist with either all anthropomorphic animals or humans living with various anthropomorphic animals, but not many have only one creature that exists with humans that think like humans, while other animals still remain as animals.
[Prepare for an intense backstory! Be warned that this backstory is not referenced in the production of this current version of “24 Karrot Co.”]
If I were to be more specific on my answer to this question, I’d say that in this universe I’ve made, bunnies are the first animals to evolve into an intelligent species. Of course, with the discovery of this strange phenomenon, humans became anxious and panicked. Some humans and human families with very open minds to their new talking pet bunny or the rabbit saying “hello” to them in the yard, just began to treat them as they would with any human being. However, many many others, such as law enforcement, government agencies, and the general “closed-minded/rational” public were heavily disturbed. Because of this, rabbits and bunnies were treated poorly and still like the animals they were. (This is why Punsy struggles to become a detective and, instead, runs a bar for bunnies to survive.)
Awfully enough, there were even disputes between classes of bunnies; high class bunnies were usually pets as wild rabbits were lower class, as they had not much to live on to begin with. (This is the reason for Nathaniel’s consistent mockery of Punsy’s dream career and why he flaunts his wealth.)
Even still, bunnies, of all kinds, struggle to fit into human society.
“24 Karrot Co.” Silly Concept Art: Carrot Cigar & Rejection Letter
Since the main characters of “24 Karrot Co.” are bunnies, I felt it would be awfully fitting for them to smoke carrot cigars. I even came up with a fun brand name, “Carrotop”, as they had a “lid” on the end you’d pop off in order to start using it.
The rejection letter was a concept I considered for part of my title sequence assignment. The beginning credits would be on the bar counter as Punsy covers it with a rejection letter from the Police Department, denying him of joining the force as a detective. The idea wasn’t thrown out, but shoved aside due to the amount of time needed for the story itself to be created for my Senior Graduation Animation.
