little ladies
“yes going crazy without doing anything stupid, though.” expecting a completely different type of response, jinri was once again startled by the spontaneous nature of jinah’s answer. it wasn’t supposed to be like this.
forcing out a few chuckles from her lips once in a while, jinri tried really hard to keep herself interested and excited throughout the long list of names she’d never head before. midway she had stopped nodding but continued eating away at her granola, taking more notice at the texture of the raisins than the backstories of jinah’s friends. “wait i thought you said some of your friends? it sounds more like all of your friends, or at least the agency, unnie.”
at about the eighth name the girl started to notice, the sheer number of people who had been invited to their night out. “i mean, i don’t mind your friends - they sound great - it’s just that i thought we could have more of a bonding thing? like you’ve said, we haven’t gone out in ages.” she hated herself for being the buzzkill, the pathetic one, and she certainly was not used to feeling this way. jinri bit her lips trying to stop herself from yelling at the other telling her she was the one who should be making decisions, not her, but she held her tongue, to keep the peace.
“we could at least cross out seungah, no?” a lot of patience was being required on her part as she smiled sweetly at the other, hiding her contempt. “or maybe i’ll bring some of my friends too. ooh, or there’s a really nice place my friend that apparently opened recently they were telling me about, we can try there - “ so jinri started, subtly using the word ‘friend’ rather than a name not only because the story was completely untrue, but to make sure she sounded like she had at least made a few cool friends while jinah was out in america partying all night. a typical girl fight, where she was trying to outshine jinah’s ideas when there really wasn’t ‘a really nice place’ her friend told her about, considering all her new friends were either geeks and nerds or middle-aged men.
Im Jinah laughed as she shook her head yet again. “Oh gosh, they were practically begging me to go -- I had to say no to some guy friends again, although I promised them for weeks that I was going to go out... I’m pretty sure they just want to be seen in public with me somewhere.” This life that she lead could not be more different than the one she had always thought she would end up having, a docile-- quiet little thing, probably in a job not too different than Jinri’s, being stuck in an office somewhere filling paperwork and attending meetings. Not like she would know anything about any of that.
“Oh...” Her smiled faltered for just a mere second, the disappointment in Jinri’s voice is palpable-- and she could only imagine the actual fire underneath her words. She couldn’t possibly tell the younger girl that she had already made plans, and Jinri was to simply join the group. No, Choi Jinri would not stand for that in the slightest, there was no way that she could accept being just another face in the crowd, not just another a pretty girl sitting in a table full of beautiful faces.
“Well I can always text them and say that I’ll hang out with them some other time...” Jinah raised an eyebrow, trying her best not to look too disconcerted at the abrupt change of the conversation, she was -- after all -- loyal to her girls first. “I mean- they would make time for me, y’now.” She said it as a joke, but it doesn’t make it any less true. Having known Jinri for far longer than she would like to admit, she could tell the sweetness dripping off her tone was far too fake-- and the whole thing just seems reminiscent of the girlish games of high school past. The games that she always witnessed but never really participated in, of course it doesn’t mean that she hadn’t picked up a few tricks over the years.
“Hm- well we can go to your friend’s place then?” She suggested simply, taking another bite of her crepe, the challenge thinly veiled in her words. “What kind of vibe is it? Modern-chic, or more rusty-vintage? I’ve been going to a lot of bar openings lately -- and gosh, they’re all so innovative these days, aren’t they? -- that I’m pretty sure I have met every single eligible bachelor in the city.” By eligible of course she meant their usual criteria of: youth, wealth, looks and impressive social as well as career standing, it’s not like the girls would settle for anything less. “So it depends... we should go to your friend’s bar if there are actually decent guys there.”
sibling (love)
‘ jinah, i love you, but if you would just stop giving a fuck like mom and dad, maybe you’d be better off. i’m not an idiot, i know my limits. i’m not going to die, relax. ’ he sighs, walking to his bathroom, leaving the door open so he can brush his teeth.
‘ i’ve always been the odd one out anyway. ’ he murmurs, squeezing the toothpaste onto the brush.
"You are an idiot.” she called defiantly, dark eyes following her brother’s form as he stalked to the other side of the room. “You don’t know the fucking limit cos the actual limit in the actual world is 0 okay. Zero fucking intake.” Jumping off the bed and walking towards the bathroom, Im Jinah glared at her brother’s reflection from the mirror.
“I’m not telling you to stop being the odd one out-- I just want you to live like a human being.”
smokes and ladders
Taemin often witnesses disasters, it’s part of his job (of his life). He has seen enough of them blow up in his face to consider himself capable of identifying one when it unfolds before his eyes, and the scene he’d stumbled on decidedly was worthy of the label. He isn’t even within hearing range, but it doesn’t take a psychic to draw out conclusions from the sight of a female emptying her drink onto a male’s face, as the circle of frozen stares falling on the couple proves.
It just wasn’t pretty.
He doesn’t make himself a part of it when the girl turns around, cascades of hair swaying to reveal a familiar face rush past him. He almost isn’t a part of it at all, a split second too late and it would just be a passing detail in his evening. He possibly would have preferred it that way.
But when the man charges after the girl, forehead creasing and teeth baring in the most unattractive fashion, he lurches into his path, one hand flat on his chest to give it a solid shove. It’s a split second too early, it turns out, and it happens before he can calculate the motion, before he can even blink. Impulse beats rationality, but only by a slight beat – his mind recoils almost immediately when realization dawns upon him. Still, he never flinches.
A goddamn white knight right there, ladies.
It could have been worse. He only misses a single punch (stumbling back into someone’s drink, ice cold liquor seeping through layers of clothing to spread over his back) before the club’s security handles the issue, bulky arms projecting around the guy’s biceps to immobilize him. He allows himself a second to savor it, the gritted teeth and the bark thrown his way as the asshole is yanked out of his sight. Over before it ever beings, one less headache to nurse at the morning.
Jinah isn’t hard to spot – she never was, by any means, but it would be quite a feat to miss the tall figure fidgeting in frustration with her cigarette. Sidling up to her unnoticed is no less easy, and he’s reaching for the lighter before she as much as acknowledges his presence.
“Here, let me get that.” A small smile, careful, and a single, equally calm flick of his thumb over the wheel. The flame flares meekly to life as he holds it out for her, eyes levelling with hers. It’s the first time in years. A brief thought to terms on which they stopped talking tells him it probably was a smart move to disarm her beforehand.
There were too many people that she had lost contact with since high school -- it’s not like she had hoards and hoards of friends in Cheongnam anyway -- and leaving for New York only distanced herself physically from everyone and everything she had ever known. She even had to reconcile with the fact that not speaking with the Plastic girls for months and months at a time. But Lee Taemin -- like everyone in their elite little circle -- had their lives so entwined with each other that they don’t even know where one line ends and the other begins.
Even though she was on the other side of the world the news still reached her well informed ears, an indistinguishable Jinri’s distress call on Skype in strange hours in the morning kept her informed on the whole ‘Taemin’ situation. And of course she was indignant for her young friend, as any sister would-- Jinah promptly launched on an incensed tirade of disappointment on her behalf.
“Thanks.” Her voice is small, and her eyes wide with pure surprise. It has been years, she only managed to see a glimpse of him in the reunion but found herself unable to say a word-- busying herself with other shadows of the past. She’s surprised that the male managed to recognize her at all, her old high school friends know that a club would be the last place to find Im Jinah on a Friday night.
“Long time no see, Lee Taemin” Her fingers lifted the cigarette to her lips for a drag, inhaling the fumes deep into her lungs before exhaling. It felt like a sigh than anything else. She was still fuming, the incident earlier fresh in her mind and even the appearance of a ghost from high school past could not distract from the bubbling anger in the pit of her stomach.
“What are you doing here?”

“skipping paris?” emphasis on the paris. probably not necessary, but what was done was done. “paris is iconic though.” who knew that after sungkyung spent all that time toiling away in the school newspaper at cheongnam, she really should have joined the drama club. she had a talent for the dramatics.
but she was never really a fan of the drama club so maybe it was all for the best.
“international is where all the business is though!” she pouted, sad that she wouldn’t have her friend with her at fashion month. jinah was always there with sungkyung — the top model and the blogger, and together they were an unstoppable kind of force. tall, fashionable, and always looking completely on point. “when have you ever heard of people raving over seoul fashion week?”
but she understood where jinah’s parents were coming from. well, kind of. her parents never had that same kind of concern for her, but she could imagine.
her eyes lit up when her friend mentioned the shows. of course jinah would book only the best. nothing dumb like that mary kate and ashley line for her, as to be expected for a model of her caliber. “you’re blogging?” she smiled, taking a sip of her drink. “you’ll be good at it, honestly. out of all of cheongnam i always thought you had the most blogging potential.”
She knew that Sungkyung was going to react this way, since the first time she heard of her parents decision she behaved the same way. Paris is an institution, something that everyone who is just anyone would have on their social calendar, if not work schedule. But anyone who knew Im Jinah would know that she’s definitely not in the type to rebel from her parents.
“Well I know some of the losers in Cheongnam used to ask me if I had extra front row tickets-- even when we’ve never spoken before.”
Jinah rolled her eyes playfully, elbowing the younger girl with a little scoff. “Oh please! It’s not even an actual blog blog, all I have to do is take selfies backstage ...and maybe try to get a selfie with the back of Kendal Jenner’s head-- that’s what they’re looking for, pretty much. Nothing like what you do, Ms Professional.”
Eyes scanning their surroundings yet again, the young brunette twirled a strand of her hair around her finger before lighting up-- immediately turning to call the bartender, grinning wickedly at the younger girl. “Kay-- so what about a game, S? For old time’s sake. Take a shot of what ever is on that top shelf- then we have to do what ever the other person says... No matter how ridiculous or embarrassing-- no take backs.”
Grinning devilishly, Jinah raised an eyebrow at her pretty friend, her mind already whirring with the oh-so-scandalous possibilities. “What do you say?”

“Don’t marry him.”
Im Jinah looked up from her cup of coffee, eyes slightly wide– mostly confused. Of course, she didn’t expect her friends to merely sit and take all of this casually– they were used to many strange and dramatic happenings, but it doesn’t mean that they would take it just as it is, even when the older girl would be the one on the forefront of acceptance. For she had always been, first and foremost, an obedient daughter.
Although this time the blonde had to admit, there is something stirring in the pit of her stomach under Choi Jinri’s accusing glare.
“Why can’t I?”
Because you don’t love him, Jinri would say.
“Maybe I could–” Jinah stopped herself, biting her lip as a way to physically stop the words from coming out at all. Her eyes however, told a different story, and she knew that the younger girl would understand, the way all her friends would– with just one look.
“But everyone is all paired up.” She replied, an uncharacteristically broken voice slithering past parted lips. Im Jinah seems all too pathetic for her own liking, but she does nothing to stop the waterfall of words that is threatening to give way. “They’re all paired up and I wonder sometimes if there will be someone that’s meant for me-- so just in case... If someone is assigned to me, it’ll be a done-deal, right? I don’t have to jump for companionship anymore.”
The words felt strange in her lips. She’s not the type to speak more than what is necessary, but here she was, completely sober, and having her superfluous stream of unimportant words swirling around her head, taunting her with it’s power over hers. But the younger girl in front of her stared, unblinking and in complete silence, and it took Jinah all she had not to have her entire body break under her impenetrable gaze. Limb by limb, like the perfectly put together doll that she is. Despite it being her friend, her best friend, she felt like she couldn’t tell her the whole truth, everything, without making a fool out of herself.
I don’t want to be alone anymore.
“Although... You know-- you’re right– maybe I shouldn’t marry him…”
Lie. Lies.
So she shrugged, her confused and slightly pained face turning cold and hard once more, with only her eyes betraying the previously visible emotions-- that seem to disappear with every gentle blink. Jinri’s unwavering gaze continued on, the way that she knew would make Jinah’s very foundations crumble. It is at these times did the older girl fully acknowledge and accept that the beautiful thing in front of her was very much protective of her feelings-- the same fierce way Jinah protected all of her friends.
“What do you want to do now?”
She shook her head slowly, eyes glancing out the window at the snow steadily pummelling the ground-- it made her strangely warm.
“I don’t know what I want yet.”
But maybe I could want him.

❝I’m so used to getting what I want, and I refuse to believe that it will change anytime soon.❞
“Champagne okay?”
“I suppose–”
She placed her chin on her open palm, dark eyes staring softly at the handsome thing in front of her. If there is one thing she knew how to do, is how to get drinks from free, and the best way to do so is to shower the one in charge with just a little more attention than the other pretty girl in the bar. But lets be real, Im Jinah is not going to be out-shined by anybody.
“I heard you have some of the really good stuff in the back… So if I can have some of those– you can keep it coming.”
“I kissed someone and it was a life-changing experience.”
“Okay… so what am I supposed to do about this?”
Jinah smiled a little, a rueful little grimace that bloomed upon rose coloured lips. She had never known Wonho for being too dramatic, but whoever this girl was– she must be pretty damn impressive to induce such finger-curling bouts of pretty words from someone who’s been around the block just as much as she has.
“Who is she? …Is she prettier than me?”
“So dramatic, you should be a writer.”
She stood up to her full height, eyes defiant and her features becoming even more ticked off by the second. Im Jinah wasn’t at all known for being dramatic – and she prided herself on it – but this man was getting on her very, last nerve.
“You– you should look in the mirror and write a goddamn novel.”

“I have no time to care.”
So did Jinah, really, but she also doesn’t have the time to explain to him why he should. She is after all, the Im Jinah– and someone like her does not need an introduction. The blonde let out a dark laugh before turning on her heel to stalk off, not before throwing an off-handed comment over her shoulder at the small man.
“Yes, because all I ever wanted was attention from someone like you.”
Who's the one person from Cheongnam you can trust?
“My girls.”
It was only a half lie, at least. God knows the Plastics has their fair share of betrayals over the years, and Im Jinah learnt the hard way – mostly due to the careless decisions made by men – that no good could come by trusting someone so implicitly, no matter how much she would like to do so.
“My brother is .... yeah well-- trusting him would be pretty misplaced since he never does anything I say.”
“Please, don’t tell anyone.”
“How dare you–”
There was no need to feel insulted, not like the way she recoiled back in disgust at his words– but Im Jinah was feeling particularly touchy that day, and her already deeply wounded ego could only mean that hurtful words and cold glares would be launched at the nearest target. It’s a pity that Jung Hoseok picked today out of all days to speak such truths. She tossed her dark blonde hair over her shoulder, eyes narrowing into a cold glare, the young woman resisting to unleash the entirety of her well-practiced cattiness.
“So who are you to feel embarrassed? Who the hell are you to ask any favours from me?”
“How much have you had?”
“What’s it to you?”
She knew that she doesn’t fight fair, not in the way she pushes and pulls people in such a way that it almost becomes a fault. Almost, she decided, is still acceptable. Dark eyes raised lazily meet her old friend’s pair of concerned orbs– Im Jinah shook her head before taking yet another sip of the concoction in front of her. It went straight to her head, and it throbbed in the delicious sort of way that she learnt to love over the years, her cheeks searing a deep scarlet with every breath that she took– But she turned to look her old friend once more, eyes turning cold with every passing moment of silence between them. She wanted to slap the look of concern off of his face, frankly it is far too insulting to her ego.
So she wont. For now.
You don’t control me.
“Fuck off- Wonho.”
