Happy Birthday James Potter!
Short silly thing to celebrate. This takes place in 2014, when they would have been 54 years old.
.
“Ahhh, that was certainly a do,” James sighed, sinking his tired body into the sofa. Sirius, his partner of many years merely chuckled as he moved around the house to… putter about doing something or other, James was too tired to care. Truly, if the party at Harry’s they’d just left wasn’t a big enough reminder of his age, his aching body would be an even bigger reminder.
“54, huh…” James mused, “Merlin, I’m old.” Though, he supposed, he was very lucky to celebrate his birthday with so many friends and family. Especially family, because boy had his son married into a large one!
James closed his eyes, savouring the moment. Time had taught him to treasure joy when it happened.
And this, now, this was it. James had achieved everything; done everything he’d set out to achieve in life.
So, when he opened his eyes to see Sirius on one knee in front of him, well, James was surprised.
“James,” Sirius smiled a little nervously, “I know we’ve had a private ceremony years ago, but the Muggles legalized gay marriage on the 13th. So, will you—”
“Yes,” James blurted out, bolting upright.
“Let me finish,” Sirius sighed in affectionate exasperation.
“Sorry, sorry,” James murmured, a hand going to ruffle his own hair, “do finish.”
Sirius cleared his throat and began again, “Will you mar—”
“Yes, yes, of course I will,” James exclaimed, lunging towards his partner of many years. He proceeded to kiss the living daylights out of Sirius.
“You really are determined to never let me have the last word, eh?” Sirius murmurs into James’ hair later. His partner curls into his chest with a large grin.
“We’ve been together for how long now? We’ve raised a son who now has children of his own. The answer was always going to be yes,” James snorted. “Now come on, me lover,” he said, wiggling his fingers at Sirius.
“Bossy,” Sirius teased, but he did as he was told and reverently slid the ring on James’ finger.
James stretched out his hand to marvel at the sight of his engagement ring, something they could never have imagined when they met as 11-year-olds on the train to Hogwarts.
“When should we have the wedding?” he asked absently.
“The first marriages will be held on the 29th,” Sirius says quietly, pressing a kiss to James’ forehead.
James hummed a little in thought.
“I suppose,” he sighed, “we ought to have a party of some sort. I don’t think Lily Luna would forgive us if we eloped.”
“Oh, definitely,” Sirius agreed, “Our granddaughter does love a good chance to dress up and direct everyone around. I wonder where she gets that from?”
“You,” James laughed, poking playfully at Sirius’ chest.
Sirius responded by catching James’ hand in his own and James could feel the smile that stretched his partner’s face on the back of his hand.
“Well, we’ll floo call them first thing in the morning,” James declared firmly, “as for now…”
“Celebratory sex?” Sirius suggested with a wink and a laugh.
“I think you’re full of excellent ideas, Mr Black! Now, carry me to bed!”
“Well, if you insist,” Sirius murmured affectionately, and proceeded to bridal carry his laughing fiancé up to their bedroom.
