FORTUNATELY  HE’S  LOOKING  AWAY  when  harris  begins  his  usual  lecture  ,  so  the  deadpan  face  sebastian  makes  in  instinctual  response  goes  unnoticed  ,  hidden  from  view  .  the  six  foot  five  hitman  and  the  four  foot  ten  agent  are  always  battling  it  out  like  this  ,  dueling  with  words  ,  but  it’s  harris’s  last  mention  that  makes  sebastian  turn  back  . . .  AND  PEER  DOWN  ,  WAY  DOWN  ,  at  harris  hovering  beside  him  .  ❝  i  do  not  make  GOO  GOO  EYES  at  anyone  ,  ❞  he  returns  ,  smothering  the  wide  grin  that  threatens  to  make  an  appearance  .  ❝  and  —  are  you  calling  mason  a  prize  ?  that’s  some  lousy  terminology  you  have  there  ,  harris  .  reducing  your  client  to  a  prize  to  be  won  .  ❞  it’s  obviously  sarcasm  ,  intensified  by  the  humorous  fact  that  he’d  LITERALLY  been  in  bed  with  mason  AN  HOUR  AGO  .  harris  doesn’t  need  to  know  that  .  ❝  my  job  is  to  protect  him  ,  keep  an  eye  out  for  avid  fans  ,  and  make  sure  he  gets  back  to  the  hotel  at  a  safe  hour  .  i  know  ,  i  know  ,  I  KNOW  .  ❞  sebastian  tugs  on  the  collar  of  his  shirt  ,  hoping  the  white  fabric  hides  enough  of  the  hickey  on  his  neck  to  avoid  harris’s  notice  . . .  though  ,  in  all  honesty  ,  their  height  difference  is  so  dramatic  ,  THERE’S  NOT  A  CHANCE  IN  HELL  HE’LL  SEE  .  ❝  if  anything  ,  you  should  be  lecturing  everyone  around  him  ,  not  me  .  everyone  tries  to  woo  and  schmooze  their  way  into  mason’s  life  one  way  or  another  .  he  doesn’t  deserve  that  .  he  dealt  with  enough  of  that  shite  with  his  ex  .  ❞  though  sebastian  wasn’t  around  during  that  period  with  brad  ,  he’s  well-aware  of  all  the  drama  and  trauma  that  ensued  .  IT  MAKES  HIM  MAD  .  makes  him  protective  of  his  mason  ,  defiant  .  ❝  i’ll  get  him  through  this  event  unscathed  and  we’ll  make  it  back  here  in  no  time  .  everything  will  be  fine  .  it’ll  be  right  as  rain  ,  SANS  THE  GOO  GOO  EYES  .  ❞  it’s  then  that  he  notices  johnny  harris’s  signature  glare  ,  and  sebastian  frowns  .  ❝  we  both  care  about  him  .  that  much  is  clear  .  just  trust  me  to  get  him  through  tonight  ,  harris  .  IT’LL  BE  FINE  .  ❞  a  pause  ,  adam’s  apple  bobbing  in  his  throat  .  ❝  i  won’t  let  anything  happen  to  him  .  you  have  my  word  on  that  .  ❞

             there’s a genuine chuckle that leaves owen at her exclamation, palming a small bunch of oregano before crunching it into pieces and tossing it, with care, into the boiling pot on the stove.  ‘ you’d be stunned at how many things a chef can do at once, miss cabrera, ’  as if to prove his point, owen flips the vegetables he has sauteeing in a pan, stirs the pot with his other hand, and goes as far as to crack open the oven door with one foot. the grin he gives back over his shoulder is playful and light.  ‘ we are full of surprises, trust me, ’      @frightends.

THE  TWO  OF  THEM  PEER  ACROSS  THE  WAY  ,  sitting  at  the  same  table  inside  shelf  indulgence  as  they  wait  for  mason  to  finish  his  shift  .  maybe  they’re  both  eyeing  him  back  there  ,  all  cute  in  his  apron  as  he  takes  orders  and  makes  drinks  .  maybe  sebastian  was  showing  off  too  many  heart  eyes  in  his  stare  .  maybe  he  makes  it  obvious  .  hannah  does  come  back  with  a  kind  statement  ,  something  soft  as  the  evening  descends  upon  the  new  york  streets  outside  .  AT  LAST  ,  sebastian  tears  his  eyes  from  mason’s  floppy  hair  and  his  smile  and  turns  his  gaze  to  mason’s  best  friend  .  HANNAH  IS  A  GIFT  ,  both  to  mason  and  ,  now  ,  to  sebastian  —  he’s  grateful  to  call  her  a  friend  ,  too  .  she  seems  to  approve  of  them  . . .  and  that’s  the  best  thing  he  could  get  from  this  .  HER  APPROVAL  .  ❝  he  deserves  everything  ,  ❞  is  what  sebastian  finally  settles  on  saying  ,  biting  his  bottom  lip  as  his  eyes  duck  downward  .  ❝  and  he  deserves  . . .  THE  BEST  VERSION  OF  ME  ,  TOO  .  i  need  to  be  good  .  i  want  to  be  someone  he  loves  for  the  rest  of  his  life  —  he  makes  me  want  to  be  a  better  man  .  ❞  of  course  ,  right  as  he  looks  over  at  mason  again  ,  his  boyfriend  is  turned  his  way  .  sebastian  winks  .  mason  blushes  .  ❝  i  also  deserve  your  scrutiny  ,  you  know  .  you  were  there  for  him  through  it  all  ;  YOU  KNOW  WHAT’S  BEST  FOR  HIM  ,  and  i  trust  your  judgement  and  every  call  you  make  on  that  front  ,  even  over  my  own  opinions  .  ❞  when  he  looks  at  hannah  again  ,  it’s  clear  sebastian  has  been  moved  by  his  and  mason’s  little  eye  lock  across  the  room  .  he  ,  too  ,  is  blushing  .  ❝  if  you  have  to  kick  my  arse  ,  DO  IT  .  if  i’m  doing  something  wrong  ,  i  hope  i  have  the  awareness  to  stop  it  ,  but  if  i  don’t  ,  kick  my  arse  again  .  for  his  sake  .  ❞  he  spots  mason  cleaning  up  the  space  behind  the  coffee  bar  ,  a  clear  sign  his  shift  was  over  .  ❝  i  think  you  and  i  are  united  in  a  way  .  we  both  love  him  .  we  want  him  happy  .  we  never  want  him  to  hurt  a  day  in  his  life  .  and  i  swear  to  you  ,  to  him  ,  to  everything  i  hold  dear  —  i  will  see  it  through  .  HE’S  MY  SOULMATE  ,  HANNAH  ,  ❞  he  adds  ,  the  words  quiet  and  reverential  .  ❝  — —  i’ll  forever  keep  him  safe  .  that’s  my  promise  to  you  .  ❞
