Espresseleine can be so painfully and viscerally romantic to me. The devotion of a knight and the committment of a scientist, both unyielding in their own ways. The way fate threaded them together against all the odds because the needle was moved by Madeleine's stubborness and Espresso's curiosity. They always stepped towards one other even though there was hesitance yet the spats were never enough to quell down the mutual pull.
The curiosity was at first glance but they grew in love together. It was an ebb and flow of like and dislike until it was no longer a matter of yes or no but of acknowledging that they occupied a space in each other's life no one else could take.
Sure, Madeleine is the romantic one in both the senses of the term -he gives the gentlest of kisses atop of Espresso's hand as he's bent on his knee and covered in wounds from battle, making sure to not get even a droplet of blood or dirt on him- but Espresso is the one who gets incredibly sentimental in a way that is absolute and disarming; he cuts deep without even meaning to -it's the "Of course I love you, how is that even a question? Don't I make it clear enough? You mean everything to me"- .
Yet every time they vocalise their feelings, no matter who it is from first, it still manages to catch them both by surprise. Espresso is disarming in his honesty but when Madeleine puts down the mask he has to use when facing the public and shows him the unfiltered, the strength of his feelings comes over Espresso like a wave that overwhelms him
"There is a space you have made a nest for yourself into my heart, Espresso, and you did it with every word and act you did since we've met- I could never not love you because you are intrinsically a part of my heart"
and Madeleine says it as if it's the most natural thing in the world (because it is) and it's the awareness that he feels it so naturally, that it's not a phrase said just for the theatrics of it, that makes tears swell in Espresso's eyes. Not because he's sad or sentimental but because it's so much, he never thought he could experience so much love in all his life, that his body resorted to tears as a first reaction.
They're deeply entangled in each other's hearts and they don't even realise it most of the time but when it becomes palpable it's unbelievable to the both of them. How could I be so lucky that stars aligned in a way that we could meet? That I got to fall in love with you and to be loved back? They even forget when they're holding hands because it just feels so natural to be like that.
