Situations of greater entropy are statistically favoured. Things that are statistically favoured tend to happen, especially over time. A disordered room has greater entropy than an organized one. Thus an organized room will tend to become disordered over time. The only way to reverse this is by continually putting in energy from an outside system (i.e. making the effort to clean your room regularly)

HOWEVER, at some point a disordered room will be maximally entropic. At this point, continually failing to clean one’s room will not generally result in a more disordered state. Thus no additional input of energy is needed to maintain the state of the room

            I found this quote on the internet about three years ago. I remember I was always looking at quotes online, just trying to find one that I really liked. This is the one that stuck out to me the most, so much that I have never forgotten it. I wrote it down, and have used it as a bookmark several times.

            This is the quote I think of anytime that I feel down, or upset. I am the type of person who gets upset easily, or stressed out over the littlest things. Whenever I feel either of those emotions, I think about this quote. I think about that no matter how upset I am, the feelings will pass. There will be other days, other happy days. I just remind myself, no matter how bad it is now it will pass, and there will be happy days in the future to make up for the bad.

            The first time this quote really hit home for me was after my grandpa died. I had probably found the quote months earlier, but the words really started making sense after he passed. I knew he was gone and that was upsetting, but the pain would fade and I would eventually only remember the good memories. It was not hard to remember the good, because my grandpa was always cracking jokes, and there are so many good memories of him. I could not help but think that the quote was accurate, because the pain and troubles eventually faded away.

            The second time the quote started to hold meaning again, was when I wrecked my car. It was my first semester at Lake Land College, I had classes five days a week, and I live an hour from the school. I was not sure how I was going to get to school every day. My parents both work full time jobs, so I could not borrow their cars, there was not anyone from my hometown with a compatible schedule that I could carpool with,  and it all just seemed hopeless. My aunt and uncle came to the rescue though. They live in Mattoon, and was in need of a babysitter, for their three kids, after school. They offered to let me stay with them, rent free, and they would drive me back and forth to school, if I watched their kids in the afternoon. Crisis was averted, and I was not paying for gas, which was fantastic. It just went to show that of course times can be tough, but the tough times will not last forever.

            Not many people know that I went through a depression about a year ago. Not even really my friends, since I made new friends in a different group. It was maybe one of the worst times of my life. I did not want to do anything, I slept all the time, and I blew off homework. Everything that was so out of character for me, and no one really noticed. I did not want to talk to anyone, I just shut myself away. All my friends were having problems of their own, and I did not want to bother them with mine. I wished I could say that when I was depressed I thought of this quote and I felt better, but I did not, so I cannot. It was not until after I came out of the depression that I realized the quote was accurate again. Even when I was at my worst, and everything seemed wrong, it did not last. The hard times passed and everything is better now.

Life is like riding a roller coaster, the ups and downs, nothing is permanent (despite the design of some roller roasters might involve loops that make you sick... ._.).
