“So I’ll see you next week then,” he says with a sleepy smile. 

“I can’t wait that long Hansol,” you reply with a pout. His smile spreads even more, finding you just as cute as always.

“Me either, but we’re just going to have to.”

Maintaining a long distance relationship was hard. There was no simpler way to put it. It was hard, stressful at times, and just as confusing, but in the end it was always worth it. Time apart was never fun but it made the time you got to spend together so much more meaningful. 

Your last video call with him was five days ago - nearly that whole week was already gone. The last week that you had to wait to see him. It was almost over, and so were the daily text messages. Soon enough you would be saying good night into each other’s ears instead of a phone.

You found today to be especially long. The second to last day of waiting. Your mind was stuck on him, and time was stuck in itself. You were sitting alone in your home, stranded. And making matters worse, the one person you were anticipating to see so much was no longer replying to you. 

With another sluggish swipe of your phone screen, you begin typing another text to him, saying that you missed him. You missed him, and you couldn’t wait for him to arrive here. After debating whether or not to send that message - you’ve probably sent the same thing two hundred times this week already - you send it anyway.

The room was silent afterwards, but there was a small ding at the door. Not a doorbell. Too... electronic to be a case of something that scratched the surface of it. Your heart stopped and sped up incredibly at the same time, and before any consideration, you found yourself making your way to the door and opening it.

There, right in front of you, was Hansol himself. He had an arm stretched out as if ready to knock - an arm that you pulled towards you as you pulled him into a hug so tight it knocked the wind out of him. Even so, he dropped a bag in his hand to engulf you just the same. 

“You’re here early! Wh- What are you doing here?” you ask hastily, looking at him. He only smiles before kissing you in such a way that it felt like you were never apart in the first place. It brought you back to his comfort, his warmth, his playfulness.

You were taking your time strolling along the street full of shops, popping in to any store that caught your eye. It helped that there were many gift shops with intriguing items along the road as well - you liked treating yourself with a little something to brighten your days sometimes. 

After buying two little things from two different shops, you promised yourself that it was enough of a treat already, and that you should leave before impulsively buying anything else. However, a book shop was right ahead and you just couldn’t bring yourself to walk away without at least visiting it. 

Once inside the small, warm shop that smelled of unknown adventure, you inspected each and every book placed on the shelves. This store is known for having a huge array of old books whose stories enraptured you the best. But in addition, they had newer books with authors you loved just as much. You were hoping to find a book by one author in particular.

As you turned a corner and combed through even more shelves, you finally found the book you were looking for: “Night Light” by your newest interest, author Jeon Wonwoo. You slid your small bag up your arm as you grasped the book with both hands. As you did so, you felt a presence next to you.

“Is that a good book?” The voice was deep and rattled your body. You look up and your eyes widen. You stutter incoherently as you open the cover of the book to the photo of the author - and it was the same person standing right in front of you with a big grin on his face. “Is it?”

You nod rapidly. “I love it! I’ve read it once already, I just- There’s some parts I still need to understand better, and that character Kim, there’s so much more I just need to know...” You trail off with too many thoughts colliding in your mind that are simultaneously blocked by the sound of his chuckle sneaking in through your ears.

your family and jeonghan’s family had been neighbors for years

and you both live in the big beautiful spacious countryside

everyone’s houses in the town were very spaced out

but everyone knew each other

the rolling hills were basically your backyard that you used to run to the top of trying to beat your best friend jeonghan

he was really fast but you managed to beat him sometimes

by pushing him over a little bit

and once you were both at the top you would have another race to see who could roll back to the bottom of the hill the fastest

you two had little challenges like that all the time to have some fun between the hard work you both did tending to your family’s farms 

you both tended to the plants and animals

as well as the properties themselves

there was always a lot to be done and everyone was always doing something

the barn jeonghan’s family had since years before he was born was really getting to show its age

wood was starting to rot near the ground and walking in the hayloft above 

which one of you always chose as a hiding spot during hide and seek

didn’t exactly feel the safest any more

so they built a new barn!! 

rather than hiring somebody the people in the town all chipped in to help

they were experienced in this after all

and after a couple weeks they had a beautiful new barn with a spot inside that people got to engrave their names into when they helped :’)

but the thing is

the barn wasn’t painted yet!! 

his family wanted a cliche red barn 

and he was in charge of painting it

so once it was all built and done he started right away and you thought you would go over and help or at least keep him some company

you could see the barn wayyy in the distance from your window and saw him working on it 

and left the house with a little snack in a basket that you put on a chair he had outside once you got to him

and he looks so happy

“ah there you are y/n i haven’t seen you forever”

“jeonghan it’s been 3 hours”

that makes your heart do a lil smile

but you brush it off because sometimes he just plays around like that 

except he’s done it a lot lately

but anyway

“do you mind if I help out?” you ask 

and no hesitation he’s like yes pls do you see how big this barn is and i have to do all of it myself ???

you see another brush on the ground beside an open paint bucket

and it’s kinda small compared to the roller he’s using but he just asks you to use it to fix any spots he missed so you’re like u got it !!

but you sit down on the grass and pick up the brush

dip it in the paint

and on a part of the barn still unpainted

you start to paint

some flowers 

you paint a good like 4 flowers before he looks over to you

“y/n can you pass me th- what arE yOu dOiNg”

you smile up at him innocently 

“you missed this spot”

and he wants to be mad at you but he can’t 

it’s physically impossible for him to be mad at you

so he says playfully “if you’re gonna play around like that then go paint your own barn”

“okay i will”

you put the brush down and get up walking away

not seeing his little pout

you walk back all the way to your house and all the way back to him

this time bringing your own brush, own tube of blue paint, and a little wooden toy barn

he sees everything you’re holding and chuckles

“what?? you told me to paint my own barn” 

he smiles widely and looks down at his feet to hide a little blush 

hehehhe

you sit back down on the grass and start painting it 

after a few minutes of quiet painting he groans and says he needs a break

so you tell him to come sit with you and have the snack you brought him

he does exactly that 

pulling the snack beside him and sitting close in front of you as you keep painting the little barn

and out of nowhere you feel something wet ?? being swiped across your cheek and a bit onto your lips

you look up startled and see jeonghan smiling with the little paintbrush in his hand

and you just know

“you got some red paint on your lips there~” he giggles

without a second thought you swipe your paint across his lips too

“and you have blue on yours” you retort

his smile fades a bit as if he got nervous

but a little smirk is still there 

and he’s quiet for a moment before speaking up again

His heart burned wood. It needed to be fueled. It needed things to run off of, to devour for itself so it could brighten its flame. The more fuel you gave him, the brighter he burned. Sometimes so blindingly that you could not bear to be near him. That was when the fuel would run low, when you left and he found himself alone, with only his mind and his heart to argue with each other. 

Arguing was nothing new to him. In fact, it was what most often caused him to burn bright. He loved that kind of fuel, it caught fire like gasoline rather than the basic wood or coal you provided him so often. Gasoline wouldn’t leave ashes behind. It was something that really got him going, and he always loved a rush.

You two were having an at-home dinner date, complete with roses and candles with golden holders and so much food that you could burst. Sure, it was takeout, but that didn’t matter too much. Neither of you necessarily felt like cooking after the long day you both had. You were at work all day, and although he had a day off and stayed home, he was busy running errands and flooding your phone with texts and calls.

He would message you or call you until you replied, whether it was a kinder “what is it, Mingyu?” or the harsher “I’m at work, stop calling me” from later on in the day. Either way, it fueled him. No matter the kind of attention he got from you, it fueled him.

He took the time he now had, sitting down with you, to tell you about a work party he was invited to. “It’s this Friday and it’ll go a little later than work parties normally go... They said it’s employees only but I was wondering if you wanted to come?” You sigh.

“Mingyu, like I said every time you’ve asked me to a work party, if they say it’s employees only then it’s employees only. You shouldn’t keep wanting to break that rule, even if it’s a small-” he interrupts you.

“You really want to go saying that again? Y/n I’m only asking you to come because I want you to be included. You always ask about my work, so I thought you could get to at least know the people there. Why do you make such a big deal out of everything?”

You sigh again and drop your fork onto your plate, leaving it to make a small clink as it hit the ceramic surface. You place your hands on the tabletop and look at him in the dim light, staying calm because you know that fury only encourages him. And out of nowhere, something encourages you to say something you have wanted to say for a while.

“I am not making a big deal out of anything, Mingyu. The only one making ‘big deals’ out of small things is you.” You backtrack a little. “I always ask about your work because you never tell me, Mingyu. You never tell me about your work, you never tell me what you do on days off, you never tell me what friends you go to see, or where you go with them for that matter, you never tell me anything. Anything. It’s like... It’s like I’m in a relationship with some kind of ghost.

“You’re never really there. You come and go, you float around our house but never make a sound.” You chuckle nervously. “You are always hovering over me when I don’t need you, then when I look for you, you disappear. You’re gone. But whenever you’re around, you knock things down. You make such a mess.”

You stop talking. Nerves have taken over your body without you even noticing, up to this point. Your hands were shaking on the table and your eyes were turning red and watery. 

“You’ve turned me into a mess,” you finish in a bare whisper.

He clenches his jaw tightly, feeling the fuel. But it’s much less than usual. You were quiet this time. He was used to running off of more volume. You didn’t give that to him. 

He bit his lip before talking. “Well, maybe if you weren’t always so busy with things other than me, that wouldn’t be the case. You’re always working, y/n. You take so much time to get home. I know you try to stay busy just so you don’t have to get here so soon. You want to delay it for some reason. I don’t get it, but I don’t like it. I just want to spend time with you.” He finishes in a surprisingly quiet tone as well, for once, but that didn’t satisfy you in the least.

“Did you not hear anything I just said?” You look up at him in disbelief. You wait for him to answer, but he rips his gaze away from you and stays silent. For once, there’s no flame burning inside of him. He doesn’t know what to do. It’s like any sign of fire was watered down by you, and all that was left inside was a pile of damp, rotten twigs and logs soaking in a dirty puddle. 

“Did you?” you repeat. He turns his head to the side and blinks harshly before looking back at you. 

“I did,” he says. You wait again, hoping to hear more. You just wanted to hear him say something.

“And I’m sorry,” he starts. It takes a minute for him to continue. “I know we have problems. I know. I just never realized I’ve hurt you so much.” His voice disappears as he finishes that sentence, as if it hurts him to say it. The water that dampened the possibility of a flame found its way from his heart to his eyes. He was tearing up too, now.

“I’m sorry.”

You find his words genuine. He has apologized to you before, but it never felt the way it did now. And, he has never cried in the presence of you before. You could tell that, somewhere inside, there was a spark of desire for change. He was sorry. He truly realized he hurt you, the person that he loved most. 

“Mingyu...” you reach out to hold his hand. His touch is more gentle than ever before. “We can work on it, okay? We can work through this. We really just need to talk it out. That’s how we’ll start, and then we take it from there.”
