GIFFING 101 - YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE ON HOW TO GIF
I have gotten many, many asks before about how I gif and I finally decided to make a tutorial. This is going to be very long, very image heavy and with a lot of details and examples. I mean it, Iām going through every, single aspect of giffing that I can possibly think of. From start to finish. And please read the disclaimer at the very start.
* I use a macbook pro but this should probably work on windows too!
I hate doing this but if this helped and you want to, please consider donating to my ko-fi or if you want, commission a theme or page from me at @amaanat <3
tutorial under cut, I hope it helps!

hi! if you don't mind me asking, what psd do you use on your doctor who gifs? if you don't use any, which specific settings do you use to make them look so pretty?
First of all, I'm so sorry for the late reply š« Secondly, I always think my gifs suck so it's very nice to hear š In the first place, it's important that the movies and series must be HD, so I download all the episodes HD. I rarely use psd in my gifs, most of the time I colour my gifs myself. There is only one usual setting that I use in most of my gifs; unless the scene is too dark or too bright, I always color the gifs according to the same setting with minor changes.
In my Doctor Who gifs, there are two different settings that I use, one is the usual setting, and the second is a wonderful setting that I learned from dear Nicole (expelliarmus.tumblr.com) You can check out her tutorial if you want to by clicking the link, I learned so much from her š„° I don't know how much I can explain as English is not my native language, but I will try š
My setting is: First, I increase the brightness enough according to the brightness of the scene, sometimes it can be 40, sometimes 100 if it's too dark. I increase mine to 25 here.
Then I add Levels, I always set the Levels like this:
This can be variable. If the scene is too dark, I set the white point (last one) to 230. This is how it looks like:
Then I add Selective Colors, the colors in this gif are red, yellow, blue, white and black. Selective Colors are up to one's own preference. I usually make big changes if I want vibrant colours, and small changes if I want dull colors. I increase the cyan in the red setting to decrease the redness, here, by 5 percent. I increase magenta by 5 percent because I want pinkness on the face. I reduce yellow by 5 percent because I don't want to bring out the yellow in the whole gif. In the yellow setting, I increase the cyan by 5 percent and decrease the magenta by 5 percent to highlight the yellowness in the hair. Since her coat is blue, I decrease the yellow by 20 in the blue setting to make it vibrant. I decrease black in the white setting by 20 percent, to bring out the whiteness; and increase the black in the black setting by 3 percent to make it darker. This is how it looks like:
I add another brightness but I increase it a little bit as this scene is very bright.
If the scene is dark, I also add a curves layer but we don't need that here. Afterwards, I still don't know how it is used but I add color balance (variable) š Here I adjust the color the way I like with minor changes. Annd that's pretty much it! The first one is what I just explained, and the second one is what I did by increasing only the selective colors settings up to 40-50.
For the second setting that I use, you can check out Nicole's (expelliarmus.tumblr.com) tutorial and I'm sure you'll find it more satisfying than mine š I love Nicole's gifs, she can make really eye-catching and sweet gifs. Her gifs are brighter and more vibrant than mine. At first I didn't know she had a tutorial, so I tried to achieve something by trial and error mostly by examining her gifs š I learned a lot by blending what I know with hers so thanks Nicole! Here's one of my gifs by using her tutorial blending with mine:
Lastly, my save for web devices settings are always Adaptive / Pattern. They make gifs look really good by fixing the colors!
I know I talked too much but I hope you like it! I don't think you expected such a long answer but I kinda decided to make this as a tutorial. Let me know if you have any questions š

Can you give me the simplest explaintion on how to make gifs. Itās literally 2022 and Iāve no clue lol
Hi! Hope you're doing great :) Hahah there's nothing wrong with that, I personally don't think learning to make gifs is something you'll regret being late for :D First off, I donāt think I can explain it simply, this is a complex process that requires constant practice. When I started making gifs again after 5 years, I realized that I actually knew nothing and I was never open to learning at that time. Now Iām constantly exploring every feature in Photoshop and reading blogger's tutorials on coloring and various other features to improve myself. I also will try to explain this process but if you want, you can check out this amazing tutorial made by one of my very dear mutual Nia <3
First you need to download Photoshop (I use CS5, I tried CS6 but not my type), you can buy it if you can, but here in my country, it's extremely expensive, so I downloaded it from t*rrent with a crack. Then you need to install MPV video player to take screencaps from videos (MPV is literally the best video player Iāve ever seen in my life when I started giffing again, like, itās not just for giffing but other stuff as well ācause you can adjust it as you wish) Hereās a tutorial from this precious person Iāve never met (x)Ā You download the first link (x) then you install it and you create a config folder (you can make as you wish but hereās mine x,) Also you can change jpeg to png if your pc doesnāt crash like mine :D
You need to download HQ videos if you want HQ gifs. I again use t*rrent to download videos, and after setting up and creating a folder for MPV player, you can start taking screencaps. As I said, screencaps are saved in a folder calledĀ āStuffā in my PC, you can create a folder with a different name if you want but make sure to change it in config file too. After taking screencaps, open Photoshop and go to File > Script > Load Multiple DICOM Files.Ā
I take multiple screencaps of multiple scenes and I create folders where I put these screencaps to put them in order. Here, there are lots of screencaps in my folders, I choose the folder with the scenes I want to gif and open it. By the way, Tumblr gif sizes are:
You select Window > Animations. Animation section pop up at the bottom. Now everything should look like this:
And then you should select all frames to change the speed of gifs.
After converting the frames below to timeline, select all layers on the right side and right click > Convert To Smart Object. Now everything should look like this:
Crop the gif from the edges and zoom in 100%. Select Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. These are basic sharpen settings that everyone uses. I also add Unsharp Mask before that, you have to practice these things to find out whatās best for you.
Also thereās something called Actions to make things much more easier and quicker. You record and save some steps when youāre making a gif and later you can just click it and it does everything for you, itās literally Godās blessing. Select Window > Actions, and it should appear on the right side.
As you can see, I have various actions for various steps which saves me from 15 minutes. After that, we colour the gif.
For this gif > Brightness: 80 / Contrast: 10 > Levels: First box = 10 / Last box = 230 > Selective Colour: Reds = +15 -3 -5 +5 / Yellows = +5 0 -5 -5 / Blacks = 0 0 0 +5 > Brightness (again): +15 > Colour Balance (lastly): Midtones = -5 +3 +3
And yay, weāre done with this part! Now you select File > Save for Web Devices. (or Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S, so fun to do this) My settings and my gif looks like this.
You should select Adaptive always, and I personally love Pattern but you can also select Diffusion. (thatās what most people do to reduce MB size ācause it should be under 10 MB) But my work hasnāt finished yet. I open the gif again because Photoshop somehow changes the speed of gif from 0.05 to 0.07 so I should change it to 0.05 again. (I searched every single forum to find the answer but nothing) I do one more Save for Web Devices and yay Iām done!!! Itās complicated and tiring, isnāt it but once you figure it out, itās so fun and easier <3 Hereās my gif:
Well, colouring looks like shit but this isnāt the case... Thatās pretty much it, I really wanted to explain it simply but itād be literally impossible :D If you have any questions, feel free to ask :) Have a good day.
Hi can I ask what your sharpening settings are? Ofc of its not a bother for you , your gifs look so crisp and hd , itās amazing
ahhh thank you so much!! here's a little mini tutorial of how i do my sharpening:
(disclaimer: i always gif in 1080p or higher, and i always download the largest file i can find! that goes a long way when it comes to making gifs look as sharp as possible)
1. start out with smart sharpen:
2. hit it with smart sharpen again with the following settings:
these are pretty standard sharpening settings that most gifmakers use. they'll get you to this:
perfectly fine, and depending on the quality of the footage you have you can probably stop there! BUT i like to add in a little extra *~*pizzazz*~* with a round of high pass:
3. go to filter > other > high pass you can set it to anywhere between 2.5 and 5 depending on your personal preference. 4 is my standard setting:
4. right click "high pass" on your layers tab and select "edit smart filter blending options." then change "normal" to "soft light" and hit ok.
and voila!
you certainly don't have to use high pass if you don't want to, and i know some people prefer a smoother looking gif. but i've been using it for a while and i love the dimension and added sharpness it gives to the gif!
i also recommend recording an action for this process as it can be really time consuming without one! feel free to dm me if you have any questions :)
