thinking about how, in previous years, sonic would’ve woken up completely alone on his birthday. maybe, once his name started getting out there, he’d stop by a town and they’d throw him a small celebration that was more so for him as a hero than it was for him as a person. not that he minded, tho. he loved the attention and the ability to show off. the presents he would get were cool and all, but not very practical for his on-the-move lifestyle

if he wasn’t at the town, they he would’ve spent his birthday running and chasing down robotnik. not that that was a bad thing, he loves running and being in nature. and robotnik’s face after sonic destroys his latest attempt to steal a chaos emerald is a fantastic present, in his humble opinion

one year, however, he still wakes up alone, but thats just because he always wakes up before tails does. he goes on a quick run and starts packing up camp when he returns. gently, he shakes the little guy awake, and one of the first things he hears is, “happy birthday, sonic!” as the kid gives him a tight hug. it’s not flashy or at all surprising (there was only so much a four year old could do), but… it’s nice.

if tails manages to get sonic a present that year, it’s much more personal. something that was deliberately picked out or hand crafted by someone who knows him and what he liked. and if tails can’t give him anything, then that’s still ok because the kid just being there is more than enough. he has someone to talk to and laugh with. he eats with tails and they fall asleep to each other’s breathing mixed in with the lullaby of the wilderness
