Could you talk a little bit about sigils?
Oh wow, thanks for the ask! So I am by no means an expert; Iâve quite literally only created one original sigil in my practice, but sigils are tools to manifest changes in your life depending on your desired intent. You could literally make a sigil for just about anything. To draw in prosperity, happiness, luck, to aid in warding yourself against negative forces, to help you feel more focused; like I said, anything goes. It is like a key phrase spell in a sense. Sigils are primarily self-intended.Â
Now, there are a few ways to go about making a sigil:
1) The Witchâs Sigil Wheel
Using the Witchâs Sigil Wheel, you take the keyword of your intent (for the following examples, I will be using the phrase I used for my own sigil âI AM PROTECTEDâ), we would take Protect, or Protected, as the keyword here, omitting any repeated letters:
Ex.PROTECT â PROTEC(omitting the second âTâ)
PROTECTED â PROTECD(omitting the second âEâ and âTâ)
And then draw a line from one letter to the next creating your sigil. You can notice in the examples found at the bottom of Fig.1 that each sigil has a circle where the first letter of the keyword begins, and a dash or arrow at the keywordâs end. This is common practice, but not required as each practitioner makes their sigils unique to their own craft.
2) Numerology Square/Wheel
This practice in making sigils is somewhat similar to the Witchâs Sigil Wheel, but instead of just using the letters of the keyword or phrase, you translate it to the number chart shown in Fig.2. There are two ways to go about this method. Using âI AM PROTECTEDâ again as an example:
Ex.I AM PROTECTED â 9 14 796253254You would then omit any repeated numbers, which leaves us with: 91476253, then draw out the path using the numbers according to the Number Square in Fig.3 or Number Wheel in Fig.4.Â
The second way of going about this method is to remove all vowels from the phrase first, then proceeding as mentioned before.
Ex.I AM PROTECTED â PRTCTD
Then omit repeating letters.â PRTCDThen draw out the path according to these letters.Â
(Note: You can also use the circle beginning, dashed/arrow end on these as well.)Â
This method is courtesy of @justanotherwitchygirl, and you can find this method linked here, where you essentially map out your keyword/phrase aforementioned in regard to Fig.2 in the Numerology Square/Wheel section, but you make small star-like points where the letters fall leaving you a beautiful constellation-inspired sigil.Â
Bind Rune sigils are the method of taking individual runes, primarily using the Eldar Futhark, and combining them for your desired intent. This is one of the methods I used in creating my sigil for âI AM PROTECTEDâ. In my personal sigil, I used the runes Algiz and Eihwaz, both of which are known for protection and strength, and combined the two to create the centerpiece of my sigil. It is a fairly simple way of creating sigils, you pick two or more runes with your desired intent and combine them. For ideas, see Figures 6 & 7. 5) Symbolism and Intuition
Iâm grouping these two together because they really go hand in hand. I used a lot of both of these when creating my sigil. After using the Witchâs Wheel and the Numerology Square/Wheel, neither result resonated with me, so I wrote down a series of words and shapes that I personally related to the word âProtectionâ; words such as deer antlers, shield, Xâs, diamonds (due to hardness), spikes/spears, and the rune Algiz for protection. Using these themes I just began to sketch around the bind rune that I had created with help of a friend, and I came up with this:
I utilized the shape of the diamond as a shield. The ends of each line creating the sides of the diamond were drawn out a little further like spikes defending the outer walls of an early settlement or spearheads. I see stags as a symbol of protection, so I drew antlers atop the diamond, and then small dots surrounding the sides to symbolize that negativity cannot penetrate my defenses. And in the middle is my bind rune of Algiz and Eihwaz. This resonates with me as strongly as it did after I first drew it, this symbol is so powerful to me and got me through a very difficult time a few months ago. When it comes to your symbolism, you can add markings, images, or symbols that resonate with you, like clovers for luck, hearts for love, arrows for progression, Xâs for cancelling something out. With this method, the possibilities are truly endless.Â
The last thing is to charge or activate your sigil, some ways to do this are:
~Charge it by sunlight/moonlight~Imbue it with one of the elements:
Put it in salt or dirt for Earth
Burn the paper your sigil is written on for Fire
Smoke cleanse, or blow onto your sigil for Air
Submerge your sigil in some type of water (moon, sun, rain, what have you)
~Charge it with a crystal that shares your intent~Sleep with it under your pillow before use~Create a small ritual chant that verbally activates the sigil~Visualization of the sigil working~Trace the sigil with your finger or wand in the air (can go hand in hand with visualization and is great energy practice)~Ripping up or Tearing the Sigil~Most commonly, just destroying the Sigil in one way or the other
There are many more ways to charge and activate sigils, these are just some I know of off hand.Â
