I have since realised that I was projecting my strong dislike for Sherlock’s start of s3 facial hair onto Kitty without realising, which I would like to issue a formal apology for.

I don’t like how he dresses like every other detective, he is different to them and has different priorities, he explicitly says that he doesn’t care about his appearance, so I think he should wear more comfortable clothes, like in s1.

I don’t mind that they got rid of the scarf though, I think that was too reminiscent of BBC Sherlock.

1) if you actually try to think about his personality, he doesn’t really have one. I think the fact that he is still played by Justin Min allows for lazy characterisation from the writers as we, the audience, automatically project all the things we liked about umbrella Ben onto sparrow Ben.

2) Klaus mourning umbrella Ben gets overlooked because sparrow Ben is there. I think that potentially sparrow Ben could have been used as a great way to emphasise Klaus’s grief or to show how close Ben and Klaus were, but I do not think that this was utilised that effectively, especially in s4 when it is completely ignored.

3) His characterisation completely shifts between s3 and s4. In s3 (whilst I still don’t think he has enough personality) he is grappling with feeling unappreciated by Reginald, being second place to another version of himself, having no identity outside of being a sparrow, trying to fit into the umbrella academy. Then in s4 he is just constantly annoyed with everyone and is creating problems for no justifiable reason. I don’t think that in s4 the writers were actually writing sparrow Ben, instead he just seems to be an “evil” version of umbrella Ben.

4) It minimises the impact of Ben’s death on the audience. It makes it harder to be upset that a character is gone when they are literally right there.

I can understand why sparrow Ben was introduced, but ultimately I think he was used incorrectly. I think it would be possible to utilise the character in a very interesting way, however I don’t think that this was done and therefore I think it would have been better had he not returned. As it is, it just feels like they couldn’t be bothered to think of another sparrow academy member.
