What are your thoughts on the trend of purposely stretched typography? What ideal or aesthetic does it respond to? If they exist, what criteria make stretched typography acceptable / successful? Who started it and when will it end?

This was written in 2007. It’s been nearly a decade. There have been entire “historical movements” in graphic design that haven’t lasted as long. That’s like calling Emigre a trend. Even if it dies it’s pervaded long enough to be legitimized as something worthy of inquiry. Anyone that calls it a trend at this point is a cop.

What is it responding to? Just look at how many people and what kind of people seem upset by this and you’ll get your answer.
