3 Glasses Later by Brazilian photographer Marcos Alberti (more portraits)
If I didnât remember actually reading this in an actual Calvin and Hobbes book as a child Iâd think it was ironically photoshopped like those comics where Mickey Mouse and Goofy talk about how reality is an illusion but this comic strip was actually justâŚâŚ. alreadyâŚâŚâŚâŚ like thatâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ

12-year-old Waleed Abushaabanâs class was watching Bend It Like Beckham when the teacher allegedly called him a terrorist. The educator has since been placed on leave, but claims her comment is being taken out of context.
My name is Junie B. Jones. The âBâ stands for âBush did 9/11â but I just go by âBâ
imagine youâre eight years old and youâre watching your favorite cartoon. you decide to try to draw your favorite character. itâs not great but you love it.
imagine youâre sixteen years old and youâve just discovered manga. the stories and the characters resonate in you. you decide this is what you want to do.
imagine youâre nineteen years old and youâve just started your BA in animation. sure, youâre not in calarts but hey, you can make it. this is your passion.
imagine youâre twenty-one years old and youâve been accepted for an internship. you clutch at the letter and cheer. this is it; the start of your career.
now imagine youâre twenty-two years old.
you stare down at the storyboard youâve spent all night finishing up.
itâs a long, detailed shot depicting a hot dog bun having an orgy with seth rogenâs foodsona. you suddenly remember sethâs notes instructing you that those buns need to be as sexy as possible. you sigh as you forget any and everything you know about character design, art, love, and passion.
and you draw the biggest, curviest boobs possible to fit onto a hot dog bun.
Two diners, Tyrone Williams and Chauntyll Allen, said they were about to eat at the restaurant when they spotted a photograph depicting a public hanging of a Black man. The image was embedded inside of a customized table. The photo read:Â âHanging at Groesbeck, Texas on April 12th 1895âł.
Tyrone and Chauntyll immediately informed the manager, who was apologetic, but that was not enough for Tyrone, who said that despite apology he would no longer dine at Joeâs Crab Shack.Â
Chauntyll added:Â âAs you can imagine, seeing that image ruined my appetite and my pre-birthday dinner. It is hard to believe that this type of racism is still going on in 2016.â

This is how Alex Karev looks at Jo Wilson even after almost four years of dating.
With utter adoration. Also sheâs probably the only one whoâs able to make him smile after reminiscing in unpleasant childhood memories about his mom.

My friends have been asking me whatâs wrong and I havenât yet found out how to explain to them in deep detail that Iâve been struggling to breathe and that the music will no longer drown out the voices Iâve been trying silence for so long.

6 years later and avatar (the james cameron movie) is still completely incomprehensible to me. like youâve got the highest grossing film in recent history and no one actually enjoyed it beyond âeh. it was okayâ
Avatar is such a weird anomaly. Itâs the highest grossing film EVER (not adjusting for inflation) by a huge margin and yet it left virtually no footprint on popular culture. It had its 15 minutes of fame to the tune of $2.7 billion dollars worldwide, and within a few years itâs like no one remembers it even existed. You only ever really see it mentioned these days in the context of its record-breaking box office.
i hate when teachers are like âsorry if im grumpy ive had a class each period hahaâ like ????? what do you think students do?????
Nuh-uh; itâs different.
Imagine having to go on stage and give your all; to leave everything on stage when youâre done. Imagine singing your heart out and dancing with all youâve got. Imagine the physical and emotional exhaustion that come from interacting with people who may not even give two shits about you and grasping at the utmost to engage them anyway. Imagine your livelihood depends on how well the audience reacts to everything you do. Theyâre bored? They fall asleep during the show? Your fault; youâre fired. You reach out to them, you try every trick in the book to make them hear you, and you donât stop until you succeed, but at the end of each hour, a new audience comes in with a completely new set of needs and interests and things that grab their attention. You must dance, sing, run, crawl. Sometimes you give them absolutely everything, and in spite of it all, the audience is merely apathetic towards you.
Imagine that you cannot leave the stage for 2 hours. You have to pee, but you also have to keep using your voice, so you must keep drinking water, and you know youâre just exacerbating the problem but God help you, you need your voice to involve the audience. You can never break character in those 2 hours. You can never betray whatâs going on in your personal life - deaths, illnesses, financial troubles (and you have lots of those). You can never turn off your brain. You must be âonâ at all times. You must be engaged and enthusiastic because that is part of your job.Â
Imagine those 2 hours become 4.Â
Shut it off.
And our actual hours teaching are even more than that.
While I agree that teaching is very demanding, I wonder if we are not putting ourselves against our students with this who suffers more pissing contest? Yes, teaching is hard. Really hard. We know this because we are adults with life experience, many of us come from other careers so we can compare teaching to other careers. We know what itâs like to teach while a loved one is in the hospital. We know what itâs like to teach after a beloved pet has died. We know what it is like to teach with divorce looming in front of us. We get that because we have lived it.
Our students have not. They know being a student. They know being a student while working a part time job. They know being a student while on 2 sports team and participating in show choir and National Honors Society. They know being a student while mom and dad donât live together anymore and thatâs confusing. They know being a student when suddenly they have a foster family or have to live with their aunt. They know being a student when it came easily to them until know, so the bar is set high and they missed something so now they canât figure out how to catch up.
Thatâs their struggle; thatâs what they know. Thatâs what is hard for them because they lack our experience. So we canât get frustrated with them when they are frustrated with their experience- itâs what they know. We canât fault them for not being adults and we really, REALLY canât negate their difficulties. To do so undermines the trusting relationship we have built with them.
I think the issue, at least in how I read it, was not understanding why a teacher might be grumpy after their work day is over.  It wasnât a student vs. teacher piece to me.  More of asking other adults to understand that being a teacher and being âonâ is difficult and having a rough day with no breaks is completely draining.
