You knock twice on the door.
Quietly, you turn the knob and try to swallow back your tears as you enter the principal's office.
Your boss waves for you to sit in front of him, not looking away from his monitor. No doubt he's reading one of several emails sent to him about your incident. You take your seat and it's then that he turns to you.
"So," he says, leaning back and pushing his glasses to rest atop his head, "what exactly happened?"
You clench your hands in your lap and stare at your knees. "I said some things I shouldn't say to a student."
"Said? I heard it was quite a bit louder than that." His voice isn't as angry as you expected, but you're still unable to let go of the fear trapped in your throat.
"Y-yeah, true, sorry. I shouted at the student."
"They brought up... him."
He's quiet for a moment, already aware of who you're referring to. A few more seconds pass, then he stands, walks around the desk, and sits in front of where you're hanging your head. He lifts your chin, and you know it's to force you to meet his eyes.
"It's still hard, right?"
You nod, unable to get any more words out. He lets go of your chin and pats your head. "I'm sorry. It'll get easier."
"When? When will it get easier?"
He glances at a photo framed on his wall and his deceased spouse smiles back at him knowingly.
"In time." His eyes fall back to you and he smiles. "In time."
