Zuko was going as fast as he could to reach ember island. He and Druk Shared a bond and could tell that Druk shared his anxiety.
Upon reaching the outer village on Ember island, Zuko asked Druk to fly lower so he could scout the area for any sign of Katara. What he saw made his heart drop. Below him, people were in a frenzy. Stalls were in shambles with produce and food scattered everywhere. He already knew what had happened but tried to cling on to hope he might be wrong.
Druk landed gently, and Zuko dismounted quickly so he could ask the people what had happened.
Upon arrival, people in the square bowed, but when he asked what happened, the villagers quickly told him what he feared, the avatar was here.
Zuko wasted no time and ran to his vacation home with Druk flying not far behind. Zuko prayed Katara was still there, and Aang just took her back to the house to âtalk.â But no luck. Zuko wasnât surprised to see she wasnât there, but it didnât ease his fears any less. No matter. He couldnât dwell on these feelings. He had to find her.
With no time to lose, Zuko grabbed the first article of clothing he could find with her scent. After all, her stuff was still there.
Aang was panicking. He didnât think Katara would act like this. It wasnât supposed to be like this.
His head was hurting, but he needed to fight it. Now wasnât the time for⌠But it was too late; before he could reach the bed roll on Appaâs saddle, his body collapsed, and he awoke in the spirit world surrounded by his past lives. They were angry with him.
âWhat are you doing?â Kyoshi started.
âYou nearly destroyed the fire nation palace.â Roku quickly interjected
âPeople are hurt.â Yang Chenâs voice silenced the room. âAang, you know why weâre here.â
Aang was still in shock. He didnât call for an audience. But he didnât the last time either. And he thought he was doing everything right to prevent this from happening-
âYou kidnapped someone.â Kuruk bellowed. âYou kidnapped Katara. Why?â
âShe wouldnât see reason-â
âShe broke up with you!â Kuruk interrupted. âShe doesnât have to see your version of reason to do so.â
âI know,â Aang assured him. âBut she canât just do that! Sheâs my for-â
âAang,â Kyoshi was scarily calm. âDoes this have anything to do with what we told you last time we all gathered here?â
Aang winced at the memoryâŚ
Aang had just exited the avatar state after Katara calmed him down. His head was pounding, and he needed a rest. Why did Katara have to fight him on this? Yu Dao was better off separate⌠Ugh, he needed to sleepâŚ
A strange sound of weary silence woke Aang. The kind of silence only found in the- wait! Aang opened his eyes. What was he doing in the spirit world?!?!
âSilence!â Kyoshi commanded.
âAang sit down; itâs time we have a talk.â Yang Chen said sweetly. A sharp contrast to Kyoshiâs harsh demeanor.
Aang did as he was told. âWhatâs going on?â
Kyoshi huffed. âYou canât keep losing control like this.â
âI know. Iâm working on it-â
âNo, youâre not! Youâre using Kataraâs pow-â
Yang Chen jumped and covered Kyoshiâs mouth with her hand. âShhh!â
Kyoshiâs eyes widened with the realization of what she had almost revealed.
Aang was confused, âWhat were you about to say?â
âNothing!â Yang Chen assured.
Kyoshi coughed, and Yang Chen released her mouth from her hand with an apologetic look.
âI deserve to know.â Aang insisted.
âLadies. Itâs time.â Roku said as he materialized with Kuruk behind him out of nowhere.
Kuruk is quiet as usual. But his face was stern with determination. A circle of his past lives quickly surrounded Aang. Whatever he was about to be told, he was confident we wouldnât like it.
âLong ago,â Kyoshi began, âwhen you were frozen. The spirits were concerned with the power of the avatar laying dormant.â
âthe world needed an avatar,â Roku continued. âthe world needed balance.â
Yang Chen went on, âso the spirits came up with a plan.â
Kuruk finally spoke, âand their plan was Katara.â
Aang frowned. âI donât understandâŚâ
Kyoshi sighed. âWhy do you think sheâs the only one who can calm you down from the avatar state?â
âHow do you think she was able to free you?â Roku added.
Aangâs eyes lit up. âBecause sheâs my forever girl! I knew it! Our love is destined-â
âNo Aang.â Yang Chen said sadly.
âItâs because she was meant to take your place,â Kuruk said.
Aang was shocked but remained silent as the avatars continued.
âAs we were saying,â Kyoshi said. âThe spirits knew the world needed balance.
âthey hoped humans would see reason and stop endless fighting,â Roku added.
âBut as the war continued, the spirits got desperate.â Yang Chen continued.
Kuruk was next. âSo they named a successor.â
âKatara,â Kyoshi said simply.
Roku sighed. âThe spirits named her as the next in line.â
âAnd If by her 16th birthday you didnât awaken,â Yang Chen grimaced before continuing. âYou would die, and she would take on the mantle.â
âThe spirits have observed your use of the avatar powers,â Kuruk Bellowed. âThey are now considering whether or not you are worthy of them.
âSo,â Aang faltered. âWhat are you saying?â
Yang Chen frowned. âWhat weâre saying is-â
âYour destiny wasnât to be with Katara, Aangâ,â Kyoshi stated. âyour destiny was to die.â
âNo!â Aang whined. âSheâs my forever girl-â
Yang Chen growled. âYou canât just keep her around against her will!â
âShe isnât!â Aang said desperately. âSheâs just confused-â
âShe said herself sheâs not!â Kuruk shouted. âWe told you about her succession in hopes youâd understand the need to control your emotions! So you would understand that you couldnât use her as a crutch the rest of your life!â
âAang,â Kyoshi warned. âThereâs never been two avatar linked people alive at the same time before.â
âThe spirits are angry,â Roku added.
âYour powers are weakening.â Yang Chen began.
âAnd hers are growing,â Kuruk said.
