“Hi Harvey!” Emily says cheerfully.

“Oh, hello Emily.” Harvey looked up from the report he was reading, “what brings you to the clinic today?”

“I just came to see you! My horoscope said it was a good day to make a new friend.”

“Were we not already friends?” Harvey inquires. He quickly looks around and then in a hushed tone continues, “I mean we see each other every Tuesday for aerobics.”

“I mean, yeah. But I would say that classifies us as acquaintances, not really friends.”

“Well in that case, let's grab coffee together later today.” He says smiling, “unless you think that's too quick.”

“No! I think that's a great idea!”

“Great! I just have to wait for Maru to show up and then I should be free for a couple hours.”

“Awesome! I'll meet you at the Stardrop soon then!” Emily flashes him a smile, waves and then leaves.

About an hour later Maru showed up.

“Hi Dr.Harvey, sorry I'm late. Sebastian needed to borrow a wrench and then we started talking a bit…” she says trailing off, “Anyways not important. What is important is that I'm here and ready for whatever we need to get done!”

“It's ok Maru, I'm glad you and your brother are finally beginning to talk. I am going to be going out for a bit. Today I just need you to update patient files, call the Mullners to come pick up their meds and make a list of what we're low in stock of so I can order more. I think that's all.”

“No problem Doctor, I am on it.” She says with a smile, “but what's with the rush? You got a hot date or something?”

Immediately his face goes flush and he begins to wave his hands in front of him in an exaggerated way, “what! No! Nothing like that. I'm um, meeting an acquaintance for coffee.”

“Relax, I was just messing with you.” Maru says giggling, “Everyone needs to let their hair down every once in a while and have fun talking to someone. You should know that being a doctor and all.”

“Um… right, yeah. I will go… do… that.” He says, slowly making his way out from behind the counter, “just call me if anything happens or Mr.Mullner gives you a hard time.”

“You go have fun! I can handle whatever comes up.” She says shooing him out, “oh and maybe lose the white coat. Makes you look a little too clinical, might put them more at ease if you don't wear it.”

“Right, good call. Thank you Maru.” He quickly takes off his coat and throws it on the counter, “better?”

Maru gives him a thumbs up and then actually shoos him out this time.

He enters the saloon, a little more nervous than usual but he's not exactly sure why. It's not like he's underaged or never entered it before. He loves a good glass of wine on a rainy day. Maybe it's because he never really hangs out with people. He'd occasionally grab a drink with Elliot and Leah but most of the time he was on his own. Despite the health benefits he preferred to spend time alone as opposed to being hounded with bizarre medical questions.

He walks in and immediately spots Emily's bright blue hair and warm smile.

“Hey stranger, over here!” She calls out to him. In front of her sits two steaming cups of coffee as he approaches she slides one over to him, “just black, right?”

“Oh you remembered, thank you. But how did you know that I was going to show up now?” He asks, looking puzzled.

She shrugs then casually throws out, “the forest spirits told me.”

“What?”

“Just kidding! I had a hunch. Now I have a question for you.” She says looking at him bright eyed.

“Oh, um, ok.” He says taking a sip of his coffee, bracing himself for a question like, what happens if I take this herb with this?

“If you had to choose, what would your favorite gem stone be?”

Caught off guard by this, it takes him a minute to ponder the question before answering, "Well it's not something I've ever put much thought into but if I had to choose I'd say quartz is nice. It seems to have a lot of uses and just looks nice, I guess.”

“Oooo that's a great one!” Emily exclaims, “You know they say that quartz is often used for protection but also has an amplification effect to the stones around it. I know you're a man of science so you probably don't believe in all of that stuff but I think it's important to have a bit of both in your life. If for nothing else than it can make you happy.”

“I couldn't agree more, well on your last point at least.” Harvey says smiling, “what's your favorite?”

“Oh there's just so many to choose from, I mean aquamarine which can help solve conflicts, I sure can use that with Haley sometimes. Amethyst that like quartz has some protective properties and helps with mental clarity, jade has the ability to create harmony and balance. Ruby can help with passion and prosperity, topaz helps with love, strength and intelligence, maybe that one would interest you. Oh and you can't forget emerald which enhances mental clarity. There's so many cool ones that it's hard to pick!” She says happily. “Oh I'm sorry, went on rambling for a while there. Do you have any special interests Harvey? I can call you Harvey, right? Or do you prefer Dr.Harvey? Sorry I should've asked that earlier.”

“Harvey is just fine, Emily. No need for formalities between friends, right?” He says chuckling. “But I really like planes. I wanted to be a pilot when I was younger but with my poor eye sight and fear of heights I could never be one, unfortunately.”

“Ooo that's a shame. For what it's worth I'm glad you moved to Pelican Town. I'm not saying I'm glad you gave up on your dreams but I am happy that I get to see someone like you around.”

“Thank you, Emily. That means a lot and well I mean it's not like I can't still build models or talk to pilots on my radio. Although I do often find myself envious of birds, they can take off whenever they want.”

“Are you interested in birds?”

“Well, I don't dislike them. However I've never really thought about it.”

The pair sat at the table in the corner talking for hours, about life, their interests and everything under the sun. About two hours later Emily needed to get ready to work.

“Well, Harvey, this was fun! Maybe we make this a weekly thing? How about on Thursdays we meet up for coffee or take a walk?”

“Sounds like a great idea.” He says.

“Amazing! I'm so glad we did this! I'd say the ice has been broken and we can say we're proper friends now!” She says beaming. “Oh and I'll take your cup if you're done.”

“Oh, yes, thank you. I'm glad we're officially friends.”

“I am too. Enjoy the rest of your day.” Emily takes the cups behind the bar and he goes to relieve Maru of her duties at the clinic. She's going to have a field day with this information.

One day a new farmer came into town and started making waves almost immediately. To start she was loaded which was odd for a small dying town like this one. Not long after she moved in and got acquainted with everyone she got his mother to upgrade her house to add a kitchen. That's when it all started. People immediately took to her. They loved having a new farmer in town and she loved them right back.

She had fiery red eyes and hair. Her skin practically glowed underneath the moonlight the first time he saw her. She looked like an angel. Almost immediately she became a bright light in the darkness. This scared the shit out of him. He didn't warm up to people that quickly but there was something other worldly about her. The very thought of her made him feel emotions he didn't think was possible for him. Sure he'd had a crush on Abigail before but this was different. This was something deeper, something that made him completely forget that other girls ever existed.

The first person she sunk her claws into was the writer on the beach. Sebastian was pretty sure his name was Elliot. He had only moved to town the year prior. To say it was a whirlwind romance is an understatement. They got together at a breakneck speed. As if by some twisted love spell hit them both. For what it was worth, the pair seemed to be happy. It however didn't stop her from flirting with the rest of the town. It started off innocently, calling people cute, giving them their favorite gifts, little things that made them feel special.

Then one day in spring of her second year of being in Pelican Town, Elliot was off on a book tour and she divorced him. That's when she started dating Leah. That's also when she started having situationships with everyone else in town. Including him. He wasn't exactly thrilled about the idea but the thought of losing her was much worse than the thought of sharing her. He wanted her to himself. But he also knew that it takes two to have a relationship. So for now he'd settle for just being her toy.

Her marriage to Leah came as quickly as with Elliot. However the flirting never stopped, with anyone. And oddly Elliot never seemed to be upset that the farmer was dating his best friend. He actually acted as if he'd never met her in the first place. The two seemed to be just as happy. Maybe this marriage would last. Everyone was wrong. This marriage only lasted a single season.

After she divorced the artist she moved onto Shane. Sebastian was oddly happy about this, if only because she made his best friend's most aggressive and depressed coworker a little bit easier to work with. Shane had never been a huge fan of Sam but since he started dating the farmer, he'd become a little bit nicer to him. Which made Sebastian's golden retriever friend really happy. He had also heard that Shane stopped drinking and planned to stay away from it. This made Sebastian think he should give up smoking. Maybe that would make her want to be with him more. However, for better or worse, Shane and the farmer were married by the end of summer.

Even though she was married, she would often come visit Sebastian. He'd take her out on his bike. Take her to the spot he'd never taken another girl. They'd sit for hours overlooking Zuzu city. Sometimes they would make out and talk about the future. He was falling hard, he thought she was too. But what bothered him the most was she would never say ‘I love you’ she would say she loved things about him. His personality, his appearance, the way he got intense when playing Solarian Chronicles or pool. But never those three little words that would make it all worth it. He of course understood this. I mean she was married to someone else after all. He felt like a piece of shit but he couldn't get enough of her. She was intoxicating. His love for her defied all rational thought. He was sure the rest of the town felt the same way. And it pissed him off.

She gained the not so affectionate nickname Rose from the townsfolk after divorcing Shane. This was because like the flower, she came with thorns. Instead of getting mad she wore the name like a badge of honor. Often telling people to call her Rosey. Soon the town seemingly forgot her actual name and the origin of the terrible nickname.

With each marriage the question kept coming. When would it be my turn? And each time she'd respond with, Be a good boy and wait. He would do just that. He needed her like he needed air. His heart physically hurt when she wasn't around. He had never been in love before and if this wasn't love, what was it? This didn't mean he didn't get tired of her shit. He kept saving to leave it all behind, he kept offering to take her with him. Each time she would tell him that she couldn't leave, not yet. Then she'd offer him a frozen tear or some sashimi. And he would drop it for a short time.

After Shane, she ended up with Emily. They were married on Clint's birthday. He thought it a bit harsh to the blacksmith but Rosey claimed the blacksmith deserved it for going after one of her women. After making a face she assured him that he was the only one she truly cared about. He wasn't entirely sure he believed her but she just kissed his nose, and left. This made him want her even more. It also made him wonder, what was her end game? What was the point of all of this?

Haley was her next victim. He thought it was a bit creepy that she was willing to go after the two sisters one after another. Especially since Haley had never been exactly nice to either of them. She had never been outright rude to him but she barely acknowledged his existence. Rosey claimed that Haley was actually really sweet. He saw this first hand when she did a charity cake walk for the children of Pelican Town. Even though she did this, it didn't save her from her fate.

The next few marriages and divorces were a blur, he's not exactly sure who she married first, Alex or Penny but what he did know is that they both were unceremoniously divorced each within a season. Rosey told him tales of how Alex overcame his hatred of the saloon for her to take her out to dinner. And how Penny was a lot bolder than she ever thought she would be. The story involved a steamy encounter in the bathhouse. He was jealous of both of them. Each of them were able to win over her heart when he was unsuccessful. Maybe he needed to be bold too. He could shock her, but how?

The answer to shocking her came to him. One day he went down to the mines to find her favorite gem, an opal. He had to venture down further than he ever has before, the elevator was broken so it took him a while. He knew he shouldn't be down there because it was dangerous. But it was worth it, she was worth it. Once he made it down to about level 71 he found about 30 frozen geodes. He'd need to visit the blacksmith the next day to get them opened. As he was leaving a skeleton blocked his path. It oddly reminds him of his Solarian Chronicles campaign he played with Rosey. He unfortunately didn't have a shield to raise but he did have a sword. The skeleton was unfortunately too quick for him. It got him and gave him a cut on his cheek. Somehow he overpowered the bag of bones and got up the ladder. On his way out of the mines, he also got a nasty cut on the leg from a rock crab. Luckily for him, he had some first aid experience and a high pain tolerance. Slowly limping his way back to the basement where he took care of his wounds.

The next day after much nagging from his mother, he stopped at the doctor's. Where he got lectured about not going to the mines by himself late at night. To this he rolled his eyes, if only the doctor understood that the competition for Rosey's heart was so serious that nothing else mattered to him. After the visit he went to the blacksmith. After the 27th geode he began to lose hope. He had a lot of gemstones but no opals. Fortunately for him, the last geode cracked open had the shiny blue stone in it. That made it all worth it. He could picture the look on her face when she received it. He thought that this would be the thing to win her over.

When he went to give Rosey the opal, she had a wide smile. Then she told him she was now officially dating the town doctor. Harvey, the big show off, got a hot air balloon and faced his fear of heights for her. Even after this gesture Harvey was still divorced, in favor of Sebastian's half sister. This made his blood boil. How the hell could she choose to marry Maru when he was right there? When he confronted Rosey about this, she said, ‘don't worry my pet. This is all a part of the plan. Be a good boy and wait.’ He wondered what the hell the plan was exactly but every time he asked, she would brush him off.

The summer after divorcing Maru, Rosey didn't actually marry anyone. That didn't mean her house wasn't occupied by anyone. She wouldn't tell him who exactly was there, just that they were different from the rest. She wasn't romantically involved with them at all, she just wanted a change. This made him feel indescribable emotions. Why wouldn't she just tell him? She told him every sordid detail of her previous marriages. Was she getting bored of him? What if she decided she liked the life she built with whoever this was? His fears were short-lived as whatever was there she kicked them out by fall.

The last straw for him came when she married Sam on his birthday. She had just divorced Abigail and then she went after his best friend. He went to confront her, he was ready to tell her off, to tell her he was finally going to leave. But she gave him the same look she'd always give him. With her bright red doe eyes and said, ‘be my good boy. Your time will come.’ With this simple statement, all of his anger disappeared as if by magic. He still wasn't thrilled about it and the thought of his best friend being heart broken soon wasn't his favorite thing. On the other hand, he knew that soon Rosey would be his… at least he hoped.

Sure enough his time did come in spring. Right after the flower dance, like always she asked him to dance and then right in front of the town she got down on one knee and presented him with a mermaid pendant. He couldn't react at first. A slap to the back from Sam snapped him out of it. He looked back at his friend, beaming at him as if to say ‘go on say yes’. All the single townsfolk were excited for him. The others looked on in horror as he said yes.

Sebastian was finally happy. He had Rosey all to himself. But he couldn't help the nagging feeling at the back of his mind. Just like he wondered when his time would come, he once again wondered when this would end. When would Rosey reveal her thorns?
