I just walked into the house after walking the dog and my mom says to me, in the same cheerful voice she uses to send me to go pick up the groceries, "I need you to recrucify Jesus."

Turned out one of the wall crucifixes lost a nail and the J man was getting himself off the cross but that is a hell of an instruction to come home to.

Little bit funny how people's dislike of Harry Potter has now lapsed into like complete and total dismissal. The other day I was at a flower show and the theme for the displays at this particular flower show were book themed. And of course an admiring crowd went round and did the circuit of displays, ooh-ing and aah-ing at various renditions of The Railway Children and Little Red Riding Hood and taking photos. All extremely cool. And then they got to the Harry Potter section and there was just a complete blank look on a lot of people's faces. They didn't even comment like with the other displays, they simply walked by giving each other what-the-fuck-is-this shrugs. My sister is getting offered the opportunity to go to Harry Potter World by her college for art purposes this year and she said people were so distinctly unpsyched by even the offer of a very cheap coach trip and abysmally low priced tickets that they were already counting themselves out of the trip months in advance. There are stores with discount Gryffindor lunchboxes and scarves piling up desperately by the masses. Little stickers on them denoting price drops. Some stickers on top of others. Nobody gives a fuck about Harry Potter. It's all terribly exciting. I hope the HBO show is the nail in the coffin and we can finally put this shambolic corpse to a stake through the chest rest

That's because the Harry Potter books are very average. They are neither as good as the superfans would have you believe nor as bad as the haters (who desperately want them to be shit because they were written by an awful human being) would have you believe. There are some things that they do well, but not better than a dozen other books you could pull off the children's shelf. There are some things that they do really badly, but not worse than a dozen different books you could pull off the children's shelf. They are the definition of mediocre children's fantasy.

The reason they took off has nothing to do with their quality, good or bad. It was clever marketing, obvious merchandising opportunities, and a whole lot of luck. Any of a hundred series could've been The Harry Potter, and it happened to be that one. And once they were popular in an era where not everybody was reading, that in itself became a reason to be popular. Teachers and parents loved them for getting kids to read; stores loved them for giving them more stuff to sell to kids. Non-readers got into them without having the breadth of experience to know how average they were and found that they (books) were fun. Bookworms knew that the stories themselves weren't as good as the Emily Rodda or Tamora Pierce or Philip Pullman they'd grown up on, but they came with something that those books didn't, which was a broader community -- you could talk about Harry Potter with other people in your class, not just that one bookish cousin the next town over and a few people on a fantasy forum that your parents didn't like you going on (because the internet is a waste of time and you're hogging the phone line). You could tell people what your Hogwarts house was and they'd know what you meant and only had a 25% chance of teasing you about it, instead of the near 100% chance if you told them what your daemon was or what sort of telepathy you'd have at Obernewtyn. Harry Potter itself was an okay fantasy series that kind of dropped off at the end, that also happened to be the entrance ticket to a social phenomenon.

Now that phenomenon has passed. And there's nothing but the average book series itself. Of course the kids don't care about it. Any of them who are bookworms enough to read a two decade old fantasy series have already read way better ones.

Yes yes yes! I can still tell you the first and last names of the two other girls — one in the year below me in middle school, the other the year above me at summer camp — who read the Alanna books. No one else had heard of them. There was no one to discuss Sabriel with. Or Lyra and Will. Or Harry Crewe and Aerin. Or any of the other fantasy books I read — and still occasionally reread now as an adult decades later. But if I dressed as Hermione for Halloween (I had the hair, and my mom’s college graduation robe fit me for dress-up purposes) everyone would know who I was.
