Zoe spent the whole morning smoking and people watching from her window, as she normally did. At Marley‘s confirmation as she was on her way home, Zoe put on a T-shirt I made her way downstairs to wait for her sister. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal, but after what happened to Marley during the Chicago performance Zoe did not want to leave Marley by herself nor did she want her sister think that she wasn’t a priority to her. But with the constant company of Aston, and after watching how the switch to care of her sister, Zoe was less hesitant to visit Yas for a weekend. Marley was Zoe’s first priority, and she always would be, but there was a part of her that missed spending time with Yas. At the sound of the door, Zoe peaked head around the corner and called Marley into the kitchen. “In here, songbird.”

MARLEY

Marley had panicked, just a little, when Zoe had indicated they needed to talk.  She had worked hard to get back on track since arriving home, resuming sessions with her therapist and keeping a detailed journal of what she ate - and the times and reasons when she didn't.  So it was a relief to find that it was for a much nicer purpose: Zoe spending time with Yas.  Marley didn't pry into her business, ever, but it did make her feel good to see that they meant something to each other. Stepping into the house with a cold can of orange soda in one hand and a coke-flavored slush in the other, she gave the best wave she could with full hands when Zoe popped around the corner.  "Be right there, Miss."  Her shoes came off and were stored by the door, and she padded through the house to hand Zoe her soda.  "There we go.  One orange soda, as ordered."

ZOE

Being home for the summer reminded Zoe so much of life before the Academy. Back when I was just the two of them. And while there were moments where she found herself falling back into old habits, she also tried to remind herself that Marley had a life outside of her and that it was a good thing. She smiled at her sister as she entered the kitchen and I smile only grew when she was handed the orange soda. “Is Aston planning on being here every weekend?” Zoe asked over the sound of her opening the can. “I just ask because even though mom is usually home on the weekends I know that her job has her on call and I don’t want you to be left alone.“

MARLEY

Marley was caught in the middle of a sip of her drink by the question, and she coughed a little as it went down the wrong way.  She wasn't even sure why it startled her, because of course she'd know the answer to that question.  And of course Zoe would ask, wanting to be sure that she was taken care of at all times.  But for some reason, having her sister ask about her plans made them feel more real. "That's the plan, Miss, weekends and Thursdays maybe too, if she can.  So I wouldn't be alone, I promise."

ZOE

Zoe watched quietly as Marley answered her question. Much like she had been watching ever since Marley’s incident. When they thought no one was looking Zoe was quietly observing the interaction between her sister and Aston. She didn’t have the experienced know exactly what was going on but she knew that it was more than them being roommates. And while Zoe didn’t trust asked and all the way she at least knew that she would take care of her sister, much like she did the night they came home from the hospital. “I would like to talk to Aston first. And I don’t want her to be here before I leave and I wouldn’t want her to go until I’m back. But I’d make sure that it fits in her schedule because I know she’s doing basketball camp right?”

MARLEY

"She is, Miss, yes.  And doing amazingly at it, as expected."  That was hardly the point of the conversation, though, so she moved on as quickly as possible.  "I can ask her if that'd be possible.  And give you her number, if you don't already have it?"  Marley couldn't remember whether they'd been in contact by phone or not, but she wanted to cover all of her bases.  "You know I'm going to be okay, right?" she asked softly.  "I'm doing okay."

ZOE

The added commentary made Zoe smirk, but she wasn’t going to bring more attention to it if Marley didn’t want to talk about it. “ I already have her number, I actually met her in boxing club. She showed me the ropes and we practiced together a little bit. So I do intend to talk to her myself, I just wanted to let you know before hand that I would be reaching out to her about this.“ Zoe took a sip of her soda but paused at Marley‘s words. She put the countdown on the counter and turned where she was sitting on the stool holding her arms out for Marley. “Come here, baby girl.”

MARLEY

Marley nodded, knowing she should have expected that.  "Oh, okay Miss.  Thank you for letting me know, I really appreciate that a lot."  The fact that Zoe had come to her instead of contacting Aston without her knowledge made her feel really good - it was trust, and it felt good to be trusted.  When Zoe's arms opened she stepped closer and into them with a sigh.

ZOE

Zoe just nodded. It was her main goal over the last few months, making Marley less dependent on her and that came with more trust and understanding in her sister. When she stepped forward, she wrapped her arms around her and pulled her into a hug. Once she pulled back, she tucked her hair behind her ear and tipped her face up to look at her. “How serious are things with Aston?” She asked, posing the direct question.

MARLEY

Marley leaned into the hug for as long as it lasted, smiling when Zoe stopped to tuck her dark hair back behind her ear.  "I...I don't know," she shook her head.  "I think serious - for me at least.  Mercedes thinks Miss Aston is smitten with me, but I'm...just me, you know?  She's so wonderful and beautiful and smart and pretty and for some reason she likes spending time with me, but I'm sure it's not like that for her...right?"

ZOE

Zoe just listened, despite wanting to interject several times throughout the conversation. This was just confirmation for Zoe. She knew what was happening. She could see how attached Marley was to Aston and in turn she could see how much Aston cared about her sister. And as much as she hated to admit it, she knew that Aston was capable of taking care of Marley and that thought made her feel simultaneously unsettled and relieved. She just watched Marley for a moment and cupped her face again. "I can't speak for her. But I can say that I think it's highly likely that it is like that for her." Zoe took a deep breath and forced the next words out. "You should talk to her about how you're feeling. So you're on the same page."

MARLEY

Marley was glad for the chance to work things through out loud, because it was the first time she'd really had the conversation outside of her own head and with anyone but herself.  Part of her felt foolish for even voicing the possibility that Aston might think of her that way, because it all just seemed so impossible.  Leaning into the soft touch, Marley felt her eyes widen almost comically at the mention of talking to Aston.  "But what if she doesn't feel like that?" she whispered, eyes welling up.   "And then I tell her and she just...doesn't want me that way?"

ZOE

The urge to take things into her own hands was overwhelming. It was a constant struggle for Zoe, going back and forth between pushing Marley to be independent and just taking care of her like she always did. Pressing her lips together, she considered her next words very carefully. Marley was so vulnerable right now and she did not want to push her while she was meant to be healing. "Okay." She conceded and tried a different approach. "Do you trust Aston?"

MARLEY

Marley didn't even have to consider the question - the answer was as obvious as whether there was a sun in the sky or gravity.  "Completely."  The single word was accompanied by a nod against the hand that cupped her face, and her eyes stayed on Zoe's even as she blinked a few tears from them.  "With anything."

ZOE

This hit Zoe harder than anything ever had. And it was hard to decipher what these emotions were. Whether she was happy or devastated to hear it. She wasn't moved by her tears, but she did recognize the significance. She swiped her thumbs below Marley's eyes to push away the tears and offered her a soft smile that still felt foreign on her face after all of these years. "I'm not going to force you to talk to her anytime soon. I just want you to be open to it down the line. Understood?"

MARLEY

Marley never felt better in her life than she did when she saw that smile from her sister.  It was as rare as gold, and much more valuable as far as she was concerned.  She shut her eyes long enough to let Zoe clear them for her and only opened them when Marley was sure they were clear.  "Okay, Miss," she promised, taking a deep breath to try and steady her heartbeat and emotions.  "I will be as open as I can.  No matter how scary it is."

ZOE

In the meantime, Zoe was going to have her own conversation with the Switch. To at least get some idea of her feelings for her sister beyond just caring for her. Again for confirmation. But Marley didn't have to know that detail. Marley already knew Zoe was going to talk to her and that in itself was a big step for her. "Good girl." She pressed a kiss to the top of her head and picked up her orange soda. "I was going to walk to the park. Do you want to come with me?"

MARLEY

Marley smiled, relieved as always by Zoe's kiss.  "I'd really like that, Miss, as long as you don't mind me tagging along."  She still had her slushie, so she didn't even need to pack up before they left.  "Want to go the long way around?  I bet we can walk past that hot dog cart that always smells so good."
