He  has  a  complicated  relationship  with  sex,  sexuality,  and  physical  intimacy,  due  to  the  extensive  and  specific  nature  of  the  trauma  he  has  endured  throughout  the  years.  

In  regard  to  his  sexuality,  it’s  …  complicated.  While  he  is  most  definitely  bisexual,  it  has  taken  him  a  long  while  to  truly  figure  this  out  or  recognize  it.  Growing  up  as  a  teenager  throughout  the  1930s,  he  did  tend  to  have  little  puppy  crushes  on  men,  though  he  often  mistook  this  for  some  form  of  admiration  or  wanting  to  be  like  them.  With  the  contextual  backdrop  of  the  war  going  on,  he  didn’t  have  much  time  or  mental  energy  to  really  sit  with  these  confusing  feelings  or  questions.  This  in  addition  to  the  fact  that,  during  this  period,  any  express  forms  of  homosexuality  were  frowned  upon,  criminalized,  considered  to  be  a  mental  disorder,  and  ( in  the  case  of  the  Nazi  regime )  severely  persecuted.  

During  his  time  as  the  Winter  Soldier,  any  lingering  questions  he  had  about  his  sexuality  were  repressed  and  effectively  wiped  out  whilst  he  was  under  the  control  of  the  KGB.  Even  after  he  broke  conditioning,  obtained  a  pardon,  and  started  therapy,  there  were  several  much  larger  issues  going  on  that  he  deemed  to  be  more  pertinent  and  prioritized  addressing.  Essentially,  it  wasn’t  until  he  had  no  choice  but  to  finally  address  his  feelings  that  he  really  sat  down  to  ponder  his  sexuality.  Even  then,  it  isn’t  something  that  he  feels  obligated  to  put  a  label  on  or  come  forward  about  unless  it’s  relevant,  but  it  is  something  he  now  knows  about  himself  after  ( give  or  take )  eight  decades.  

In  regard  to  sex  and  physical  intimacy,  it  grows  even  more  complicated.  During  his  time  as  the  Winter  Soldier,  he  was  severely  traumatized,  abused,  and  assaulted  in  a  manner  of  ways  at  the  hands  of  people  who  viewed  him  as  an  object.  This  included  several  instances  of  sexual  abuse,  which  he  is  only  now  really  beginning  to  work  through  as  his  memories  come  back  to  him.  This  has  resulted  in  him  needing  to  fully,  completely  trust  someone  before  he  is  ready  to  have  a  physical  relationship  with  them.  Lighter  things  such  as  kissing,  holding  hands,  cuddles,  etc.  are  fine,  but  foreplay  and  sex  is  something  that  needs  to  be  built  up  to  and  will  require  a  lot  of  patience  on  his  partner’s  end.  

As  far  as  kink  is  concerned,  there  really  isn’t  much  to  say.  He  struggles  with  being  submissive  in  a  sexual  context  because  it  places  him  in  a  headspace  that  is  deeply  uncomfortable,  as  it  reminds  him  of  his  time  being  under  control  of  the  KGB.  In  turn,  he  also  struggles  taking  on  a  more  dominant  role,  because  where  there  is  control,  there  is  potential  to  lose  it. He  can’t  be  sure  he  won’t  hurt  someone,  or  that  things  won’t  go  wrong,  and  he  doesn’t  want  to  risk  it. 

James  Buchanan  Barnes, Jr.  was  born  to  James  Barnes Sr.,  Indiana  local  and  well-regarded, high-ranking  U.S.  Army  soldier,  and  Winnifred  Barnes  ( née  Warszawski )  —  a  Jewish  immigrant  from  Poland.  Winnifred’s  family  had  emigrated  from  Ząbki  in  1907  when  she  was  a  child,  due  to  the  rise  of  nationalism  in  Europe  and  subsequent  spread  of  antisemitism  throughout  the  early  1900’s.  Her  family  entered  the  United  States  through  Ellis  Island,  settling  in  New  York  until  1921.  Decent  sized  populations  of  Jewish  communities  seemed  to  be  moving  further  west,  with  the  Warszawskis  following  suit  and  landing  near  Shelbyville,  Indiana. It  was  here  that  Winnifred  met  James  Barnes,  a  born  and  raised  local  of  German  and  English  descent.  He  was  raised  a  non-denominational  Christian,  resulting  in  a  blended  household  at  the  time  of  their  marriage,  and  sequentially,  their  son’s  birth  in  1925.

Bucky  was  born  on  base  in  Shelbyville,  with  the  first  nine  years  of  his  life  spent  with  his  sister  and  him  predominantly  being  raised  by  their  mother,  who  always  made  sure  that  her  children  were  aware  of  their  heritage  and  Jewish  traditions.  Though  the  family  was  cautious  and  kept  their  status  as  Jewish-Americans  under  wraps,  they  tended  to  celebrate  major  holidays  within  the  comfort  of  their  own  home,  abided  by  kosher  food  laws,  and  attended  Jewish  services  led  by  chaplains  when  possible.  

In  1935,  tragedy  struck  when  Winnifred  died  from  a  bout  of  pneumonia  —  leaving  her  two  children  behind.  The  family  decided  to  incorporate  elements  of  traditional  burial  rituals  into  her  funeral  without  making  it  obvious,  such  as  opting  to  not  have  her  embalmed  and  burying  her  in  a  plain  box.  Though  a  shomer  was  not  necessary,  Bucky  used  the  common  orthodox  practice  of  having  someone  watch  over  the  body  of  the  deceased  to  disguise  the  fact  that  he  was  not  ready  to  leave  his  mother’s  side,  memorizing  the  lines  of  her  face  while  he  still  could.    ( The  experience  of  being  in  such  close  proximity  to  a  dead  body  would  only  prepare  him  for  what  was  to  come. )

Shortly  after  her  passing,  the  Barnes  family  was  relocated  to  Camp  Lehigh  in  Virginia,  where  Bucky  then  spent  another  large  part  of  his  youth.

After  the  death  of  his  father  and  separation  from  his  sister,  Bucky  began  to  stray  from  religion  as  a  whole,  as  it  was  becoming  more  and  more  dangerous  to  be  outwardly  Jewish,  and  his  focuses  fell  on  combat  training  within  the  military  and  becoming  the  camp’s  mascot.  By  the  1940’s,  he  had  been  sent  overseas  to  England  to  receive  further  training,  the  only  remnants  of  his  faith  now  a  Star  of  David  necklace  kept  hidden,  burying  his  past  and  never  making  mention  of  his  lineage  to  anyone.

As  Barnes  became  involved  with  Captain  America  as  a  teenager,  he  became  a  counterexample  to  Hitler  Youth  —   helping  extensively  with  freeing  Nazi  prisoners,  and  later,  aiding  in  liberating  concentration  camps.  Though  incredibly  proud  of  the  work  that  they  were  doing  to  defeat  the  Nazi  Party  and  the  likes  of  Red  Skull,  being  on  the  front  lines  and  acting  as  a  firsthand  witness  to  the  genocide  of  his  own  people  was  an  undoubtedly  scarring  experience;  after  having  his  memories  restored,  Bucky,  to  this  day,  still  suffers  from  night  terrors  —  forced  to  relive  every  moment,  plagued  by  the  recollection  of  faces  from  the  days  of  liberation,  haunted  by  the  memories  of  falling  into  a  pile  of  corpses.  

Nowadays,  Bucky  is  incredibly  lax  when  it  comes  to  practicing  Judaism,  though  he  still  observes  some  major  holidays  such  as  Hanukkah,  Rosh  Hashanah,  and  Passover  whenever  he  is  able  to,  though  it  mostly  just  consists  of  lighting  candles,    and  a  lot  of  cooking  or  baking,  as  he’s  a  very  food  motivated  individual.  He  still  wears  a  Star  of  David  necklace  tucked underneath  his  shirt.
