Darkness, numbing and soothing. There is no pain here, no nauseating sensations to remind him of things he’d rather forget - snapping bones and unanswered questions and his blood writhing in his veins - and it feels all too easy to lose himself to it. There’s no need to come back; he’s safe here, guarded by non-existence and the cold clammy hand of death slowly closing around his heart. But then… a voice, filtering through the haze with a desperation that cuts through him like a blade, stirring him into awareness.

Lavi’s eye flutters open slowly, breaths shallow, vision blurred and tinged with white at the edges. There’s a hand on his cheek, a voice by his ear that feels familiar and comforting - but alarm is rising with him, that voice shouldn’t be here, not when - and as his gaze drifts towards the girl by his side he can’t ground himself enough to feel that any of it is real.

“Is it… time to go already?” His voice is hoarse, a shaky smile upon his features, as if they’re preparing for a mission and aren’t in danger. “Give me… 5 more minutes…”

When Lavi’s visible green eye moves up to look at her, Lenalee’s eyes soften. His breathing is abnormal and the look in his eye is DISTANT, like he isn’t all there. At the site of Lavi’s weakened state, her heart clenches painfully. Of all the times she’s seen him injured, this is undoubtedly the worst.

“Lavi, we don’t have five minutes,” she whispers, voice gentle. How does someone take a person as STRONG as Lavi and make him so FRAGILE?

But escaping brings up another question—one more important now than later. How on earth was she supposed to get him out of here? Dark Boots was fast, but jostling Lavi around would do just as much HARM. ... Did that even matter? If he stayed here, he’d be tortured to his last breath.

That or there’d be nothing left of the young bookman to save.
