Hello, friends! I’ve been meaning to make a Pirates fic rec list for years and the day has finally come. This list is obviously in no way exhaustive and is very much indicative of my personal biases (*cough* lots of Norrington *cough*), but I can heartily recommend every fic that made this list and I hope you all enjoy it. Making this was a labor of love and I would be thrilled to hear your thoughts on any you choose to read (though you should leave a kind comment for the author first)!
Other notes: I collected the bulk of these years ago, so there are a lot on FFnet and I have tried my best to screen them for various content warnings. I believe only two fics on this list are explicit and are marked as such. There is precious little slash on this list since that’s just not what I tended to read at the height of my Pirates phase; my apologies.

A ‘modern girl in POTC’ fic in which the girl in question, Bibsy, dies almost immediately upon arrival in the POTC-verse and joins Davy Jones’s crew.
I can’t speak to the overall quality because it’s been a while since I read the whole thing - I can only say it was my favorite back in the day (it was published in 2007). I thought it was funny and that the main character was a lot of fun. Also, I haven’t seen a ton of fic about daily life aboard the Dutchman, so that’s neat too.

Hobbit - Thorin (and Kili & Fili) Lives - Thorin x OC
I have So Many Thoughts about this fic that at this point it lives in my brain rent-free, and is a comfort fic I re-read whenever I'm feeling down. Before I truly got into fanfic, this was the only fic I read, as my old friend Arkanfire was the one who wrote it. But MY GOD it's such a wonderful fic, the main character Rúin and her family are all wonderfully developed and full of their own quirks and personalities, there's interesting and unique side characters (Old Lavri my darling ❤️), tension and angst and romance, and not to mention a delightfully slow slow-burn between Rúin and Thorin which feels so organic and natural, even if she did hit him in the face with a book 😂
10/10 will recommend everyone reads this, and while it's not completed, every chapter is a delight!!

It's one thing to read a Modern Girl in Middle Earth, it's another thing to have that modern girl piloting a helicopter to escape Isengard and crash landing it out in the wilderness. And if THAT doesn't make you want to read it I genuinely don't know what's wrong with you (affectionate) This is the fic that made me go "you can DO THAT???" and motivated me to try my hand at fic writing, so you can thank Scylla for the 100s of K I've written since reading this delight!

Pirates of the Caribbean - Norrington Lives - Norrington x OC 🔞
I think I stumbled across this fic by a recommendation post from Scylla, but it was The Best accidental find of the year! This fic made me see Norrington's character in a whole new light, it goes into such wonderful detail as to the world of PotC, and develops characters while staying true to form! It's a long one at 400+K but GOOD LORD it's a worthy binge read! Esta has such brilliant writing style, it's well worth checking out ALL of her fics!

LotR - Aragorn x Reader/OC
I love this cursing barmaid so much you don't even know, I want to be her co-worker SO BAD purely to have gossip sessions and shit talk the patrons and check out the lanky and grimy Ranger that keeps dropping by. I'm not normally big on Reader pov's but good lord I'd read the entire trilogy narrated by this girl, it would be hilarious.
Veiled Hearts by @Konartiste
LotR - Éomer x Lothíriel
My first foray into Éomer/Lothíriel fics and oh boy was it a good one to start off with! There's emotional conflict, a slow burn, building up of friendships and trusts, and is a delightful read every step of the way. I can't wait to see how their betrothal plays out in the second part, but if you (like me) can't wait that long, I also highly recommend reading Konartiste's The Marriage Bed of the Brute and the Bookworm(🔞) to tide you over in the meantime!

Hobbit - Thranduil x OC
The sheer level of lore and world-building that's gone into this fic is mind-boggling, I especially love the use of welsh, the bards acting as advisors to the leaders, and the plight that brought Thranduil to the greenwood. I've already gotten unreasonably attached to the side character of Braignir! Updates regularly and is well worth subscribing to!

Do you like Boromir? Do you like the peaceful yet raucous life in the Shire? Do you like flower symbolism? Do you want Boromir to have a Good Time at his friend's wedding? Then this is absolutely the fic for you!! It's delightful and soft and with just a little bit of angst to sober you up, and a very satisfying ending. AND it comes with art!!! I cannot recommend this fic enough!

I actually love the characterization that while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan truly do love each other very much and end up having a successful working partnership, they are SUCH different people, and actually, really find each other fucking annoying when you get right down to it, while still caring deeply about each other. Qui-Gon is having a stratosphere-level theoretical philosophical conversation in his head while Obi-Wan is so present and practical and funny, and then Qui-Gon's reply when he snaps out of it is like "....stay in the moment, Obi-Wan."

I think about two scenes I love in Phantom Menace where the film is establishing Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's dynamic. Obi-Wan's great moment after the, uh, first attempt on their lives "you were right about one thing, Master - the negotiations were short" which is like, actually a genuinely funny observation? Qui-Gon's reaction to this? Nonexistent. We do not get a shot of Qui-Gon's expression, not even an off-camera Liam Neeson dry reluctant chuckle. NOTHING. Cut scene. Sure, this could be the fault of the scene transition, but I don't think anyone watching the scene was under the impression that Qui-Gon bellylaughed and said "good one, Padawan!" The mood is much more of Qui-Gon shaking his head, not dignifying the line with a response.
The other is Qui-Gon's "there's always a bigger fish" line after they've nearly died in another horrific way under the Naboo planet core, a scene that gives me a powerful new kind of combination of fatal levels of thalassophobia-claustrophobia. It could have easily been a "business on Cato Neimoidia" callback reference to some offscreen history together, but no. Qui-Gon just says it, incomprehensibly, while Obi-Wan scowls silently at the controls. And yet, Qui-Gon sounds contentedly amused. It's so fucking hilarious to me. He said that line for the benefit of one person in that ship: him, and he likes it.
They don't get each other's jokes, and yet, I think it's telling that they're both still making them after what, 12 years of Master Padawan partnership. They are both constantly thinking like “what are you TALKING about?” about the other one's core qualities. They both think their miscommunications are the other’s fault. It's incredibly good characterization to me, and it makes them so realistic.

Melilot is sick of being ordered to go on dangerous quests by her domineering stepmother. Especially since she always winds up needing to be rescued by her more magically talented stepsisters. And now, she's been commanded to marry a king she’s never met.
When hideous spider-wolves attack her on the journey to meet her husband-to-be, she is once again rescued—but this time, by twelve eerily similar-looking masked huntsmen. Soon, she has to contend with near-constant attempts on her life, a talking lion that sets bewildering gender tests, and a king who can't recognize his true love when she puts on a pair of trousers. And all the while, she has to fight her growing attraction to not only one of the huntsmen, but also her fiancé’s extremely attractive sister.
If Melilot can't unravel the mysteries and rescue herself from peril, kingdoms will fall. Worse, she could end up married to someone she doesn’t love.

It's been a minute since I've read a book that was this much fun!
I loved Melilot as a protagonist, her humorous narration and references to various famous fairytales she has been involved in made this book a highly entertaining experience.
I loved the wacky fantastical worldbuilding, with the wide array of settings and magical creatures. Most of this book takes place in the kingdom Melilot travels to, but we still get to experience other places and stories from the stories told by the characters.
Stepmothers and stepsisters get villainised a lot in fairytales, so I was glad to see how this book approaches Melilot's relationships with them with nuance. In Cinderella, it's Cinderella against her two stepsisters who are fully related to each other, but here, Melilot and her stepsisters are all stepsisters to each other. In spite of that, they have a good relationship to each other, although Melilot struggles with feeling inferior to them.
The relationship between Melilot and her stepmother is where it gets interesting. Her stepmother is a classic Evil Queen™️, except that she's... sort of good? Her stepmother is a good and fair ruler, who ensures the safety and prosperity of the kingdom, and is an alright mother to her other two daughters. However, she is not a very good mother to Melilot. She makes decisions that she thinks are best for Melilot, but goes about it in a way that at times can be abusive. I was worried about how this would get resolved, but I think their relationship was treated with the nuance it deserves.
I'm not the biggest fan of love triangles, because I find that it's always pretty obviously which person the main character is going to choose, and that is definitely the case here. Regardless, I LOVED the romance! No spoilers, but it's easy to see why Melilot ends up with the person she ends up with. They have an easy chemistry from the moment they meet, and the way their relationship developed felt natural.
One thing that bugged me big time was how the antagonist was depicted. This book subverts and satirises fairytales and handles all these different relationships with nuance, yet somehow the villain was really one dimensional. I feel like the villain should have been more fleshed out, rather than just being like "I'm evil and power hungry rahhhh".
