[---ā¦Why do youā¦. want to leave?]
(Somehow from the big tree⦠I heard a thumping soundā¦like the sound of a heartbeatā¦...)
As for how I found out about this, I was taking a nap on the tree as I would normally do. Unconsciously, my feet brought me towards the direction of the library as l suddenly felt the urge to tell Masked Lady about this.
Masked Lady has recently been cooped up in the study room all day, doing nothing but spacing out. It feels like she has become more absent-minded and listless. Although I hate her for being so spiteful, seeing her being so listless kind of make me worry about her.
(She also hasnāt been so mean* to me as of lateā¦.)
(TN Note: Well, this could also be maliciousā¦as how I translated it previously but somehow to me the sentence doesnāt really fitā¦? Despite me translating it as malicious the previous time)
Could it be that being in this world is so boring that it causes her to become more irritable, and thatās why she was so sarcastic to me?
āHey, do you want to go to the room with the big tree? I wanna to tell you something.ā
Once in the library, I mustered my courage to speak in a friendly tone. But the target is like a wall, constantly staring at the painting hung in the room.
(Speaking of whichā¦isnāt the room being lit with candles? Why does it suddenly feel so dim now?)
āā¦ā¦I will be satisfied if the things can stay the way it is nowā¦ā¦ā
Masked Lady didnāt seem to hear me just now and continued staring at the painting and mumbling to herself.
I didnāt understand what she meant. Up until now I thought that it was because this world is so boring, thatās why she was always in such a bad mood.
āIf you donāt go back, will Deemo always be here?ā
Masked Lady said this in a tone that sounded like she was in pain and was on the verge of tears. I stood there frozen, not knowing how to react to it.
āWhat do you meanā¦?ā
I asked, tilting my head.
To put it simply, judging by what she said, it seems that when I go back, Deemo will also disappear⦠but before I came here, Deemo was already here. So even if I were to go back, Deemo will always be in this worldā¦technically it should be the caseā¦.
(What is Masked Lady worrying aboutā¦.?)
āā¦Itās nothing. I was just asking.ā
After a moment of silence, Masked Lady turned away from me and returned her focus back to the painting and let out a deep sigh.
I was startled by the sudden sigh as it was smooth and drawn-out like bubbles. They quickly disintegrated into a white mist that seemed to be absorbed by the painting and disappeared in an instance.
Ever since that day, the tree suddenly stopped growingā¦.
No matter how much Deemo played the piano, the tree doesnāt seem like it has grown at all. Even so, Deemo tirelessly played the piano daily but no matter what, it seems that the tree wouldnāt grow at all.
(Why did the tree stopped growing)
I stared at the tree for a while, and I still donāt get it. Itās like trying to figure out a way to dream what you want, but no matter how hard you think about it you canāt come up with a solution.
The light that is shining in from the window also got dimmer for unknown reasons. Maybe thatās a sign⦠that the tree has reached its growth limit. No matter how I look, the tree has grown taller than any trees that I have seen.
(Does this mean I canāt go back home if this goes onā¦?)
I honestly canāt recall how my life was before coming here, what kind of family do I have.
Every time I think about being unable to go back home, I feel quite sad. But no matter how upset I am, my tears wonāt flow. Itās like you canāt run properly in a dream, you know your eyes are welling out but no matter how much I blink, not a single tear is being squeezed out.
While playing the piano, Deemo would occasionally look at me with concern over my low energy as I stare up at the tree. For some reason, the melody coming from Deemoās playing was able to smooth my troubled mind. But the tree still shows no signs of growth.
After some time, despite having no expression, Deemo seems to have experienced a setback and stopped playing. Deemo went to the library and came out with stacks of heavy books. He then sat down on the broken root and started reading. Deemo must be trying to find a way to make the tree grow.
----ā¦ā¦Deemo why are you so kind to me...?
Even though I wanted to ask Deemo that, Deemo wonāt be able to answer that.
(Speaking of which, its coldā¦.)
Ever since the tree stopped growing, it has gotten colder here tooā¦.
(I feel that the tree has lost its spiritā¦like it has become frozenā¦)
Then like opening a freezer, a sudden gust of cold air blew from the tree hollow, lowering the temperature of the room.
(Itās so could I feel I could become frozenā¦)
As I unconsciously let out a sigh⦠Mask Lady who rarely came to the piano room, was here.
No, rather than rarely, its more accurate to say for the first time. Because Masked Lady never once looked at the tree properly.
āHow has the tree been growing? Oh? It didnāt grow at all?ā
Masked Lady happily started a conversation with me. Ever since the tree has stopped growing, Masked Lady has been oddly happy.
It even makes me wonder if previously it was someone else that was wearing the mask and pretending to be her. Not only does she feel refreshed, but she was also full of energy too.
Facing such an enormous change in her personality, I no longer have the strength to fight back.
(Maybe, I really wonāt be able to go back homeā¦)
Ever since the tree stopped growing, these kinds of thoughts have also grown more frequent. Maybe it might be my density to stay here forever⦠--- or it is me that want to keep living in this worldā¦
Because living here with Deemo makes me happy, to the point where I cant recall anything before coming here. The time spent with Deemo fills me with unspeakable bliss.
--If this goes on, it might be a good idea tooā¦
With my mind wandering around, I donāt want to be in the same room as Masked Lady who was happily circling around the tree and went to the study.
Just as I entered the study, a wave of extreme dizziness hit me once more, twisting like a distorting in time and space. It forces me to crouch on the floor.
Then suddenly, my body was hit with a rush of pain and somehow, I have lost all sensation in my arms and legs. Despite this place having no concept of time, I donāt know how long I have been crouching in front of the study room. After I have regained sensation in my arms and legs, and the dizziness start to go away, I slowly raised my head, and I could roughly see a lot of angels outside the window.
(Angels---ā¦This world couldnāt be the world that people go to before they are bornā¦.?)
Just as this premonition began to linger in my mind, a cat plush suddenly appeared at the corner of my eye. For a moment, it looked like it just blinked.
(Ehā¦? The cat plushā¦why did it move to the side of the paintingā¦?)
Wasnāt this cat plush supposed to be sitting on the chair near the window just now?
(And this paintingā¦it kind of feels different from beforeā¦)
Carefully, I inspected the painting, and I can feel that it is different than before. Cautiously, I slowly put out a finger to touch the painting.
Like when putting a finger into a bowl of water, my finger went into the painting
Even though I find it scary, at this point there is nothing to lose and I put my entire hand through and then half of my body. The painting was actually linked together with the corridor!
I got frightened and quickly pulled myself out and without hesitation I called out that name at the top of my lungs.
The piano music suddenly stopped, and I could hear Deemo running towards me in a panic.
[--- The pulse that stopped has begin to beat again.
No matter what the cost is, I must keep you here.]
