　食べることと読むことは、たしかに似通っている。茶碗や箸という道具を手に取ったり、食べものを見たり嗅いだりすることも、食べることにふくまれるように、物質としての本にさわり、それを開いたり、目で厚さをはかったりすることも読むことにふくまれる。　どちらも、それらの手続きをしている時間とともにあるということだ。あるいはむしろ、そうした時間とともにあってこそ、はじめて本が読めるのだし、食卓にもつけるのだと思う。　しかしまた、暮しには食事や読書だけがあるのではない。冬の朝、枯れ葉を水のように洗う朝日の光をみているのも暮しのうちである。死んでしまった犬を埋めてやるのも暮しのうちである。
