cutĂŠ Ę đ đđđž or reblog! twt: @roseyzip
This is a map of Asia. North Americans, you may notice this map is not solely comprised of Japan, Korea, China and Thailand. People in the UK, you may notice India is not  a continent. That is, if those of you who generalize entire continents can even pinpoint India on a map. Indians are Asian, gasp! And not all brown skinned people are Indian, also, gasp! There are an alarming amount of people, of all ages, from all backgrounds, who seem to be unable to process this.
Iâm ethnically Asian. Since Asia is an extremely large continent, I could be from any number of countries. I am neither from India, China, Korea, Japan or Pakistan, yet not so surprisingly, I am still Asian.Â
Yes, there are commonalities across regions, through the conflation of cultures, colonialism, globalization, transnationalism and movement of diasporas. Sometimes these are all the same thing. Rickshaws, rice and curry can be found across the continent. But letâs not overgeneralize. You can also find Buddhists, Catholics, Muslims and Hindus across Asia. Cantonese Speaking Chinese Muslims! English Speaking Indian Jews!Â
No, we are not all the same. Orientalism? (Please look up Edward Said for basic concepts) No thank you.Â
Geography, people. Itâs important.Â
This pops up on my dash every so often. I reblog it again, not just because I wrote it, but because nothing has changed since I first posted this.
Whatâs cool about Iran is that it falls in 3 different regions of Asia so depending on what part of Iran youâre in, you can kind of get culture shocked a bit. The central and western part of the country is West Asia, the north east is Central Asia, and the southeast is in South Asia.Â
To the folks wondering about Russia being included, I want to mention that the cultural debates and angst about that has been going on for CENTURIES. While France has been pretty fetishized all the way back from Peter the Great, there is no question that we are not Europe, even with that influence showing really obviously in historical seats of power like St. Petersburg. Nonetheless, the whole country was under control of the Mongols (The Golden Horde) from roughly 1242 to 1480, and that left an enormous Mongolian and Tatar heritage that remains to this day. The ancient Scythians are huge in the cultural imagination as well. And besides⌠look at the Russians who are outside the standard âKievan Rusâ phenotype (which most folks assume is how all Russians look.)Â
Here are three of the 30 distinct ethnic groups in Siberia alone:

Swirls of Jupiter
Jupiter is a very stormy, turbulent, violent planet. The planet completes a day (or one complete rotation) within roughly 10 hours, which creates massive winds, producing these swirls, and violent storms. The fast rotation coupled with the fact that the planet is nothing but gas greatly multiplies the Coriolis effect. Earth too has a Coriolis effect, this creates the characteristic hurricane shapes and also contributes to the fact that storms will spin the opposite direction in different hemispheres. Luckily, our rotation is slower - our storms are less frequent and less violent than they would be if our days were shorter.
The above images come from the recent Juno mission by NASA.
The struggle is REAL!
Must have a cold glass of sweet tea on the side. (x)

Poll: if your mom remarries when youâre 26 years old is that guy still your stepdad or is he just your momâs husband.
The poll winner seems to be âdepends on whether you like himâ which is super valid.
Mine watches fox news so âmomâs husbandâ it is!
My family has a great way of distinguishing between a new spouse you like and new spouse you disdain!
Your mom/aunt/grandma/etc remarries and they are actually a cool person, you use their first name. So if you were to introduce them they would be: Aunt Jane and Bob.
If your mom/aunt/grandma/etc remarries and they are a fuckwad you introduce them as: this is Aunt Jane and her second husband. The implication being that they are very replaceable and that weâre all just waiting for her to wise up to the situation and serve you divorce papers, she did it once, she can do it again.
MAGNIFICENT
Alright, but what if my mom on her third marriage found a decent man, but my mother herself is shitty

Youâre doing them a disservice by not including who they are! These girls are high school students. They are the Tomioka High School Dance Club from Tomioka High School in Osaka. They went viral in Japan when they got runner up in the âAll-Japan High School Super Cup Dance-Offâ held as part of Yokohamaâs summer of dance this summer (August 2017). Youâll know Yokohamaâs summers of dance from the regular mass Pikachu dances you see on social media each summer.Â
Theyâve blown up since then. The promotional video they made at the school has more than 30 million views. Theyâve been on tons of TV shows, including performances with Oginome Yoko, the original singer of the song (Dancing Hero (Eat You Up)) that they remixed for their dance.Â
This dance routine was riffing off the comedian Hirano Nora and actually includes some of her comedy catch phrases in the remix. (They even got her to join them eventually!) For the uninitiated, one of the most accessible forms of comedy in modern Japanese pop culture are comedians like this who create outlandish SNL type characters and then appear on one or more shows regularly as that character. Hirano Noraâs gimmick is that sheâs a woman from the height of Japanâs âbubble economyâ era in the 80â˛s when there were tons of newly wealthy yuppies. This is why the remix is called âBubbly Danceâ. (Compare her to similar comedy character Blouson Chiemi whose gimmick is that sheâs a modern, man eating career woman.)
These girls deserve all the fame theyâre getting. You can read about them in the Asahi Shinbun and also check out this piece on Akane, their 25 year old coach via Japan Forward.Â
