i get an unbelievable amount of happiness everytime you post
NOTE: I wrote this draft ages ago after one of my early watchings of the film and my interpretations have changed, but I'm still posting this because I think it's kind of interesting even if it leaves stuff out, and it's cool to see the evolving of the thought process. I'll follow up in the reblogs with something written a while afterwards that's more in line with my current thoughts.
Cal's response to Andre's somewhat delulu ideas around Zero Day is sooo interesting. Cal shows some level of disregard, almost, for Andre's bravado throughout the movie. One of his personal tapes has him revealing that Andre wants to do a lil Bonnie and Clyde thing after the shooting, and Cal knows that's not gonna be happening, but doesn't seem to have any interest in bringing Andre back down to reality or informing him of his own true intentions (suicide no matter what). Andre is over the moon about the egging, Cal seems to be going along with it. Andre dramatically sets off the bottle rocket, Cal is kinda like "that's it? Ok lol". He entertains Andre's flair for grandiosity (and Cal certainly has a streak of that himself, based on the way he talks about Zero Day) but his attitude towards Andre's vision of Zero Day seems verging on not caring that much. He's there to kill people and kill himself, and he's very grounded in that. He knows that Andre isn't.
This could be seen in a few ways:
1. He knows that Andre needs to see it this way or he's not gonna do it, and because Cal sees this is a big, super important thing for them to do together, he's letting Andre do what he needs to do. At the end, he eases Andre into suicide because he knows it's the best option at this point, and believes that it was all worth it.
2. He knows Andre needs to see it this way or he's not gonna do it, and he needs Andre largely for the technical stuff.
The draft was followed up with:
Andre was gonna come in there on May 1st w a fucking tap routine prepared but he couldn't get Cal to agree to it so he called it off and left it out of the tapes
Follow up draft written a bit after this that's still old but whatever:
The bottle rocket thing, Cal is kinda like "...that's it?" and suggests using something bigger, which Andre shoots down bc he doesn't want to get caught. Andre shoots off the bottle rockets and seems quite impressed with that, Cal doesn't, really
The egging thing, Cal wants to break into the garage and egg the car, Andre says it's too risky. Andre describes the mission as "great", Cal says "it'll be alright" and that it would be better if they were shooting Brad instead. Andre once again seems pretty happy with the egging, Cal is like "ok"
Cal also causes a scene at the poetry thing lol and gets into a fight outside, which Andre berates him for
Overall, Cal is much more impulsive and even more grandiose than Andre is. Andre is quite satisfied with his "missions" and hyping them up, Cal wants more. He always wants to leave a bigger and darker mark. We see from his personal tapes that he's obsessed with giving his death meaning-- Cal is the more suicidal one, but he wants to take as much as he can with him

few facts about the film Zero Day (2003):
•The characters Andre and Cal were originally named Avery and Thomas. Ben Coccio (the director) decided to use the actors actual names so their families wouldn’t have to remember a different name.
•In the party scene, Andre was originally going to be very social and friendly with everyone and they were going to sing happy birthday to him.
•In the Zero Day commentary track, Andre revealed he had a crush on Rachel when filming.
•Cals house in Zero Day was the actors real family house in Stratford, Connecticut. they moved out as of 2017.
•The eggs were not in either of the boys basements, it was actually Ben’s fathers basement.
•the scene of Andre laying in the pavement was filmed 2 months after the initial egging scene. Cal had been wearing different clothes, that’s why the camera never panned to him.
•Cal Robertson actually got his braces removed during the filming, and Ben wanted to record it and keep it in. In the scene, you can hear Ben’s voice talking instead of Andres.
•In the scene “who needs prozac when i got you dad?” made Cal laugh so hard, milk came out of his nose.
•Ben had to get Cal to film the diary entries, as Cal was uncomfortable speaking alone to a camera.
•This is the actual note Cal wrote to Chris
