FNAF 2 MOVIE SPOILERS I WILL BE SHARING MY THOUGHTS SO PLEASE SKIP IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED IT YET!!!
First off, I’ll start with a controversial opinion: Michael’s character in the movie wasn’t that bad. The movie universe is a separate continuity so Scott can write whatever he wants. Think of it as the “What If” comics from Marvel. Scott wrote the Fazbear Frights and Tales books as a way to expand his writing because he could. The movie universe is another way that Scott wanted to tell a story that isn’t just the mainline games. With this logic, Michael being the villain makes a lot of sense. If you look beneath the surface level, Michael being a villain matches up to what we know from the games. It’s told to us in sister location that he followed his father’s orders to go down to the bunker and put Elizabeth back together. He did what he asked but then realized the truth because of it. It’s not far-fetched to believe Michael will have a redemption in the FNAF 3 movie similarly to SL. Hell, we got a look at Circus Baby in Vanessa’s nightmare, which is a hint to the Elizabeth possessing Baby parallel from the games and Silver Eyes trilogy of novels.
Because of this, it makes sense for Michael to be evil and then have a redemption arc for the next movie. He can’t be redeemed if he didn’t do anything evil in the first place. It had to parallel the games somehow, so Scott writing him as the main villain made sense for the movie narrative. Just like the games, movie Michael was manipulated by William to do his dirty work and I predict that in FNAF 3, like Sister Location, he’ll learn the truth and side with Mike and Abby. Unfortunately, Vanessa is now evil because of Charlotte possessing her body, which would make the siblings switch roles. My boyfriend pointed out that Charlotte acts a lot like Ennard from sister location, going inside of bodies and possessing them to do her bidding. The way Abby got rid of the marionette was throwing her up, like how game Michael did with Ennard. Scott is clearly taking aspects from the games and books to make the movie narrative.
The classics fighting the toys was based on the twisted ones novel, where the classics fought the twisted animatronics to save Charlie and co. It’s a reference to the old videos of people making the classics fight the toys back when the fandom first began too. There’s a lot of thought put into the parallels and narrative. I get people have bias and I’m a huge Michael Afton fan myself, but you gotta realize that media takes inspiration from other forms of media. It’s not black and white. Just because a character is evil doesn’t mean it’s bad for the character or that the character got “butchered.” Michael being evil fits with the movie universe and if you know anything about the games, you’ll realize that Michael obeying his father is an established piece of canon.
He’s taking on the role of Elizabeth from the games in this way; on the other hand, he’s taking aspects of his original game canon by obeying his father and having implications that William abused him. If you know anything about abusive parents, what Michael does in the movies fits really well with a child wanting love and affection. If a child does something the parent wants and they gain affection, then of course they’ll continue the behavior. William tells Vanessa in her nightmare that “she’s his favorite” wouldn’t that imply William not giving a shit about Michael in the movies? We know he doesn’t in the games or with any of his kids to begin with, but people are forgetting that Michael siding with his father is a scenario that could have happened in the original game universe.
Environment plays a lot into how someone grows up. Michael in the games was similar to Vanessa in the movie, reluctantly following William until he learned the truth, grew a backbone and wanted him dead. Movie Michael wanted his father’s approval so bad because he most likely grew up neglected or as the punching bag when Vanessa got all the love and attention. Of course Michael would grow up thinking “I need to do what my father wants so he can love me.” It’s just game Elizabeth but with movie Michael. It showcases how environment made game and movie Michael different characters. Game Michael had his redemption earlier than movie Michael did; Michael in the games murdered his younger brother on accident, which made him realize the consequences of his actions; meanwhile movie Michael was most likely encouraged to do what his father wanted since what he did was never good enough. William knew Michael couldn’t be at the level he wanted him to be so he gave him false hope as Vanessa stated to Mike in the dinner scene. “You’ll give Abby false hope”, huh wonder how she knew that.
The same logic applies to Charlotte’s character. We know in the games she’s the protector of the ghost children, not being vengeful toward William in the slightest, since the vengeful spirit is the one pulling the strings; however, in the movie, she’s given the role of TOYSNHK along with her role as the marionette. Makes sense if you consider how she died in the games, neglected by her father to die by her uncle’s own hands. She had every right to be mad at the parents and adults who failed her, especially Henry. The movie took that idea and ran with it because again it’s a separate continuity. As I stated previously, the marionette also fills the role of Ennard, controlling bodies to mask itself as human to avoid suspicion and get what it wants. It’s obvious in the games that Charlotte was bullied and outcasted; the movie took that to make her death more impactful.
The main message of this thread is to remember that not everything is black and white; media literacy is important and you can choose not to like something, but be aware that the creator can do what they want with their franchise. Marvel, Star Wars, DC and so many other franchises have made separate continuities to make more stories. Why? Because continuing the same plot can get boring after a long time and writers want to expand their vision. Michael and Charlotte being evil makes sense in a big picture lens because in the games, that could have happened under different circumstances and it makes logical sense for their characters.
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie and the soundtrack, animatronics and characters were amazing. I loved how they improved from the first movie and I know the third one will be even better. Don’t bother with the critic reviews, this movie was made for the fans and it showed. One last thing: CANDY THE CAT CAMEO IN THE FIRST ACT OH MY FUCKING GOD MY FAVORITE ANIMATRONIC IS REAL AND CANON TO THE MOVIE UNIVERSE LET’S FUCKING GOOOOOO!!!!
