Number 31: El Laberinto del Fauno AKA Panâs Labyrinth (2006) Source: Netflix Runtime: 1:59 Premise: While a war rages around her, a young girl meets a strange creature who offers her immortality if she completes 3 mystical tasks. Itâs an interesting paradigmâthe difference between whatâs important to adults vs what matters most to children. Itâs nice to have a story with such strong female characters. Though it did drag on, it was well structured and very imaginative. Itâs easy to see why it receives such high accolades. Youâll find heroines youâll love to root for and villains youâll love to hate. Itâs a great experience for anyone looking for a fusion of The Wizard of Oz and Schindlerâs list. Itâs a dark adventure that perfectly blends the dreariness of reality with the magic of fantasy. I can give it no less than 3.5/4. Number 30: Audition Source: Tubi Runtime: 1:55 Premise: A grieving widower is convinced by his producer friend to audition women for the role of his new wife. Itâs purposefully misogynistic, and pretty accurate of the male-female dynamic. Itâs like if Fatal Attraction and Hostel had a Japanese baby. The âvillainâ is given a sympathetic backstory, however, which I think helps break some ideologies. Itâs really a movie about decisions, consequences and the influence others have over us. Thereâs so many examples of how one choice or one comment can change the course of oneâs life. That is truly frightening. Itâs an eerily l depiction of trauma and madness and how one sometimes lead to the other. Itâs a slow burn, but I can only blame my ADHD for making it hard to stay focused. It quickly goes from zero to 160, thoughâvery pro-climactic! That being said, you might have to look away at some point. Iâm glad I finally saw this one. It lives up to the hype and is still striking even by todayâs standards. I couldnât really find anything wrong with it so I think it might be only the second film to which Iâve ever given a 4/4. Itâs superb. #takashimiike #japan #japanese #tubi #HalloweenMovie #Scary #October #FilmReview #Movies #Film #MovieCritic #Horror https://www.instagram.com/p/CVrmVPTrCbMIVMpkIA-gVRrMMgAwdSyhOnSemI0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 29: The People Under the Stairs (1991) Source: Peacock TV Runtime: 1:42 Premise: Thereâs a creepy house in the neighborhood surrounded by rumors of murder and depravityâletâs break into it! Thatâs how things start off. Director, Wes Craven takes us inside the house of nightmares. The house, though seemingly basic on the outside, on the inside is a maze filled with traps and secrets. A heroâs journey unfolds as our ensnared protagonist (known as âFoolâ) fights his way to freedom. Along the way he rustles with several moral questions and learns the difference between good and evil. Iâve seen this movie a dozen times and I canât get enough of it. Though it does exacerbate a few stereotypes, it also brings up a few important race/economic issues still relevant today. Brandon Adams should be commended as a pioneer in a genre with few black leads. There were dozens of plot holes, but none that depleted from the overall goal of the film: to entertain. Itâs a nostalgic and creative romp with lots of memorable characters. It still has one of my favorite lines from any horror movie. It gets a well deserved 3.5/4. As Alice would say, if you donât like The People Under The Stairs you can, âGo To H Eđ đ !!â #Halloween #WesCraven #ScaryMovie #ThePeopleUnderTheStairs #HalloweenMovie #Peacock #Scary #October #FilmReview #Movies #Film #MovieCritic #Horror https://www.instagram.com/p/CVqP2tZLmA8hIN5ABiUq6ciKiR7IXyXkG3icb80/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 28: A Cabin in the Woods (2011) Source: Peacock TV Runtime: 1:35 Premise: Without giving too much away, it starts off as a satire of the classic âcabin in the woodsâ horror flick. Itâs the Evil Dead meets The Truman Show. Seemingly trite in the beginning (I honestly stopped paying attention at some points) it picks up about half way and gets more entertaining. It turns out to be a witty and somewhat thought-provoking thriller. Everything you love about scary movies gets rolled into one here with some clever jokes peppered in. Even a few horror alumni make graceful cameos. Though a parody, it manages to break some rules and gets away with it. I thought it was a praiseworthy tribute to the genre while at the same time being itâs own unique story. 3.25 #Acabininthewoods #Halloween #Horror #ScaryMovie #HorrorMovie #Peacock #FilmReview #MovieReviews #Film #ClassicMovies https://www.instagram.com/p/CVmD9E1Lf_RSDGsAaxCs8-aWdK1-GnwPdc9bi40/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 27: The Mummy (1932) Source: Peacock Runtime: 1:13 Premise: There was a tomb and a curse and yatta yatta. Itâs pretty much Phantom of the Opera, but with mummies and without the cool music. Actually, there wasnât much music at all which was odd. This was definitely a white privilege movie. There was a little racism and a little sexism and very little else. Meanwhile, I was bored throughout most of it. Itâs so damn slow and not even worth the wait at the end. The Brendan Fraser version was better. Iâd rather rewatch The Scorpion King. Disappointing. 1.75/4 PS: what is the point of calling yourself an archeologist if youâre paying other people to do the actual digging? #TheMummy #Halloween #Horror #1930s #ScaryMovie #HorrorMovie #Peacock #FilmReview #MovieReviews #Film #ClassicMovies https://www.instagram.com/p/CVjta8YLb2t2N8ix9UJGaR204kn9CFC-EIXqfs0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 26: Coherence (2013) Source: Tubi, Crackle, Pluto TV Runtime: 1:28 Premise: A comet is causing weird things to happen at a dinner party. I mean, if you like quantum physics and you like confusing-ass movies this one is for you. Thereâs a lot of layers to unpack. Everyone was making ridiculous decisions that made no sense, but at the same time that was kinda the point of the movie. They put a new spin a lot of old chestnuts. For example, they found a novel way of making cellphones not work. The stylized camera work with the shot of the wine glasses, was a little annoying, though. I did enjoy seeing Nicky Brendon from Buffy, but it was sad that his story in the film kinda reflects his real life. That was also, ironically, a major theme. Meanwhile, I noticed that they had a very tiny budget. That worked in a way because you got to see some uncommon face. All the actors were excellent, though, given some of their personal live one could see why they would have accepted such low paying roles. In any event, Iâm glad they did. Honestly, I donât know what to make of this one. It does keep you interested and it was a beautiful film that didnât need much cash to make. I always believe the best art come from limitations. This was painstakingly hard to rate, but Iâm settling on a 3/4. #Coherence #Hostra #Thriller #ScaryMovie #Halloween #Tubi #Crackle #PlutoTV #MovieCritic #FilmReview# #Movies #Film https://www.instagram.com/p/CVhMSClrZZhkICpvijgWiKMTTpy3we5MaPAf700/?utm_medium=tumblr

Number 25: Knight of Badassdom (2013) Source: Tubi, Vudu Runtime: 1:25 Premise: A couple of LARPing BFFs accidentally summon a real demon. Itâs a strange thing to watch actors pretending to pretend. A few of your and my favorite faces pop up in this fantasy themed horror comedy. The story was pretty cute, but not altogether unique. Keeping with the spirit of the LARP they get major point for inclusion. Plus, itâs always satisfying to watch Peter Dinklage battle a succubus. The special effects department could have benefited from a bigger budget. The jokes were solid though not Lol funny. Still, like with role playing, it did echo strong vibes of camaraderie which made for a pleasant experience. They mightâve made me actually consider LARPing or playing Dungeons and dragons again (with the right people). A commendable three out of four. #HorrorMovie #FilmReview #Horror #MovieCritic #ScaryMovies #halloween #knightsofbadassdom #movies #tubi #vudu https://www.instagram.com/p/CVeecb2rNgV0mjkPvXha7Ob1_1OD4I-NzFGb8U0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 24: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) Source: Tubi, Vudu, Pluto TV Runtime: 1:23 Premise: Tomatoes Attack. Itâs supposed to be a parody of Alfred Hitchcockâs the birds (which I also thought was stupid). Lame 70s jokes, too much political satire and not enough actual fights with tomatoes. The tomato monsters, meanwhile, woulda been cooler with faces like on the movie posters. I mean, I know itâs low budget, but they arenât even moving most of the time. The songs were cute, otherwise a pointless movie. Itâs not even worthy of cult classic recognition. I could barely keep from falling asleep. 1.5 #AttackOfTheKillerTomatoes #HorrorMovie #FilmReview #Horror #MovieCritic #ScaryMovies #Halloween https://www.instagram.com/p/CVb3tZSrgXk3OtsTKIwbobnJCr4xBxn2iPRVzc0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Number 23: No One Gets Out Alive (2021, not to be confused with Nobody Gets Out Alive or No One Lives) Source: Netflix Runtime 1:25 Premise: A creepy pair of brothers rent out rooms in a cheap âwomen onlyâ building where residents keep disappearing. Itâs a cleaver mix of realism and fantasy that explores the fears of human trafficking. Things I liked: the honest portrayal of heartless psychopaths, the thoughtfully blended in supernatural elements, the focus on the indifference and inevitably of death. Where it needs improvement: the pacing was a bit slow in the beginning, CGI could have been better and itâs not super original as I could see it âborrowedâ some from other movies. Despite its minor shortcomings it was still enjoyable. The villains were truly terrifying and the heroine was a fierce fighter. The roles werenât overly stereotypical, but they didnât break many glass ceilings either. It wasnât bad or good. Itâs was okay. 2.75. #No oneGetsOutAlive #HorrorMovie #FilmReview #Horror #MovieCritic #ScaryMovies #Netflix #Halloween https://www.instagram.com/p/CVZgoS8LeLVln-mVovhonCB18DIyj9uQfeK4gA0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 22: Resolution (2012) Source: Tubi, Crackle, Amazon (all free) Runtime: 1:33 Premise: A man goes to extreme measures to save the life of his best friend struggling with addiction. The location is really the most frightening thing about this movie. Set in the backwoods filled with secrets, cults, and minimal law enforcement itâs a perfect stage for horror. Itâs not a horror comedy, but it doesnât shy away from the fact that even in scary situations people can still be funny. Ironically, I felt like the decisions the addict made were more sensible then his friendâs. Itâs a slow burn, but it becomes increasingly unsettling as time progresses. Thereâs lots of metaphysical conversations that philosophy majors will find stimulating. Not sure if I would have ended things that way, but I still enjoyed the experience of trying to unravel the mystery. 3.25. #Resolution #Horror #Halloween #ScaryMovie #tubi #AmazonPrime #crackle #FilmCritic #MovieReview #MovieCritic #Scary https://www.instagram.com/p/CVW7PiXL5YfEWPsVI3zGp01LX98gMruWh0Ap380/?utm_medium=tumblr

Number 21: REC (2007) Source: Crackle Runtime: 1:18 Premise: Hereâs a found footage foreign film thatâs surprisingly poignant. On a gig reporting on the nighttime activities of Spanish (actually form Spain) Bomberosđ an enthusiastic reporter finds herself caught up in a zombie apocalyptic. You do end up rooting for homegirl, but itâs also fun to watch people fall apart in a crisis. Here they took the familiar undead trope and revamped it. Thereâs a lovely cast of characters who perfectly capture the complexity of human emotions. It had a real Lord of the Flies feel to itâthe loss of stability, the paranoia, prejudice, selfishness. It doesnât take much for people to start turning on each other, but you do find elements of heroism mixed in with the chaos. The cinematography was spot onâthey really mastered the hit or miss genre. There were some really terrifying scenes and the urban setting made it easier to imagine myself in the same situation. I love the pace at which everything goes to hell. Brilliant ending by the way. Easily a 3.75/4! Highly recommend! #REC #HorrorMovie #ScaryMovies #FilmReview #Halloween #zombies #zombie #MovieCritic #Horror #crackle https://www.instagram.com/p/CVT1w59rFqrObRQ0pXilyEoyGTCOKY2YrT6gwg0/?utm_medium=tumblr
Number 20: The Company of Woods (1984) Source: Tubi Runtime: 1:35 This star-studded period piece centers on the werewolf mythology. Itâs pretty much a retelling of Little Red Riding Hoodâwhich I now realize is a metaphor for rape. As expected the practical effects give us some bloody and painful looking transformations. Interesting feminist-ish inspired dialogue, but kinda missed the mark. It was as much of horror story as a grim fairytale. It did get a bit boring in the middle. I liked the use of animals and the nature backdrops (no cgi or green screens here). It definitely takes the cake as far as set design goes. They make interesting parallels between the world of man and wolves, but it was overall very âŚodd. Nothing anyone did made any sense. I couldnât understand anyoneâs motivation and it had some strange rape culture vibes. I could take it or leave it. 2.5. #Halloween #Werewolves #Werewolf #Wolves #CompanyOfWolves #80s #MovieCritic #ScaryMovies #Horror #HorrorMovies #HalloweenMovies #tubi #movie#review https://www.instagram.com/p/CVRsk5Wrm55y2x1mAAxgsPDTa2X1vdwbjvzKd80/?utm_medium=tumblr
