#foodtripping road trip memories: Throw-net fishing, oystering, and attending a Luau in Oahu, Hawaii
We made it to all 50 states. Can you believe it? We can’t quite either. We finished our journey with a bang, taking on three different adventures in Hawaii. There was throw-net fishing, which means standing calf deep in water and tossing a 20-pound net over any fish you see. Not quite as successful as salmon fishing in Alaska, but just as relaxing. There was also oystering on an 800 year old pond at Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park, and then pulling a pig from an underground oven known as an imi. It was quite the adventure, and the tiki drinks in pineapples were certainly well-earned on the last night. Read the full report here.
Hot-tip: Trying to do all 50 states in just over 50 days is a little...erm...intense. We recommend taking your own foodtripping adventure at a more leisurely pace.Â
#foodtripping road trip memories: Salmon fishing on the Kenai River in Soldotna, Alaska
If we’re going to start ranking our #foodtripping experiences, this is definitely right up there. Salmon fishing at sunrise on the famous Kenai River. While we didn’t get to eat out catch, our guide Mindy assured us that we caught some winners. Frankly, we felt like the winners getting this experience. Read the full report here.
Hot-tip: If you’re in Anchorage, you should try a reindeer hot dog. We can assure you that it’s a delicious, spicy kielbasa-like fresh meat.Â
#foodtripping road trip memories: Burger and Beer Joint in Miami, Florida
Miami is all about healthy living and bikini bodies, right? Yes, except when you’re eating a 10lb burger. Actually, the patty is 10lb, so once you add the custom made bun and the toppings it’s more like...well...the manager proudly crowed that it was the “size of a manhole cover.” Did we eat it all? (spoiler alert: no) Read the full report here.
Hot-tip: There are 16 burgers on the menu, many of them decked out with high-end ingredients like foie gras and black truffle. Go for one of those instead.
#foodtripping road trip memories: Jim’s Drive-In in Lewisburg, West Virginia
We were looking for local food made by a local family, and Jim’s Drive-In delivered - this old school burger joint hasn’t changed much since it opened in the early 50′s. The family are all on the kitchen, doing their bit to serve local favorites like its ranch burger (with ham and sweet pickles), the fried green tomato sandwich and amazing milkshakes. We put Molly to work, and she fit right in. Read the full report here.
Hot-tip: Fried pickles with their amazing homemade ranch. Trust us.Â

#foodtripping road trip memories: Five Mile Mountain Distillery in Floyd, Virginia
It wouldn’t be a trip south without stopping for some moonshine. Virginia delivered in spades. Our destination: Five Mile Mountain, Floyd’s first new distillery since Prohibition. Housed in a historic building just outside of Downtown, the spot makes whiskey the old way: on copper stills over open flames. Read the full report here.
Hot-tip: The 80-proof elderberry moonshine, which may be made from an innocent berry but packs quite the punch.Â
#foodtripping road trip memories: Belue Farms in Boiling Springs, South Carolina
When people think peaches, they usual think Georgia. We were surprised to learn that South Carolina actually produces more peaches than their next door neighbors, and we were excited to get stuck in and pick some at Belue Farms. Read the full report here.
Hot-tip: Peach fuzz is extremely itchy. The picking staff wear long sleeves and use baskets for a reason! #lessonlearned
