The fishing cat faces severe pressure from habitat loss and poaching.  For example, on Java, less than 11% of the island’s mangrove forests, prime habitat for fishing cats, is now remaining.  In addition, the cats are often caught accidentally in fish traps and foot snares.  Poaching is also a major issue, as fishing cats are considered food items in much of their range.  In Thailand, for example, a long term study of 17 fishing cats was being carried out.  Over half of the animals were taken by poachers.
