化け物たち七変化の時代
「古い世界は死に際にあり、新しい世界は出生の苦しみにもがいている。目下現今は化け物たちの時代だ(The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters)」——2025年、第2次ドナルド・トランプ政権発足以降、主にジャーナリストたちに食傷気味なほど繰り返されて少し陳腐に感じられる程になってしまった言葉だ。 Continue reading 化け物たち七変化の時代

The Eye, Like a Strange Balloon, Mounts Towards Infinity is the name generally given in English to an 1882 lithograph by French artist Odilon Redon.[1] It depicts a hot air balloon in the shape of an eye.[2] The image was used in the first translation by Charles Baudelaire of Edgar Allan Poe's poetry.[3]

Aquamanile in the Form of Aristotle and Phyllis
South Netherlandishlate 14th or early 15th century
An aquamanile is a vessel for pouring water used in the ritual of washing hands in both religious and secular contexts—by the priest before Mass and in a private household before a meal. The subject of this celebrated example is the moralizing legend of Aristotle and Phyllis, which achieved popularity in the late Middle Ages. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher and tutor of Alexander the Great, allowed himself to be humiliated by the seductive Phyllis as a lesson to the young ruler, who had succumbed to her wiles and neglected the affairs of state. Encouraging Alexander to witness his folly, Aristotle explained that if he, an old man, could be so easily deceived, the potential consequences for a young man were even more perilous. The ribald subject indicates that this aquamanile was made for a domestic setting, where it would have doubled as an object of entertainment for guests at the table.

The Magic Roundabout has become a big part of life in Swindon since it opened in 1972
(via Six of the world’s most unusual roads - BBC Bitesize)
Sometimes on a car journey it feels like you’re simply going around in circles - welcome to Swindon's world-famous Magic Roundabout!
This isn't just one roundabout, because it's made up of five mini roundabouts encircling a central island.
It opened in 1972 and was initially called County Islands by the local authority. But the people of Swindon began referring to it affectionately as the Magic Roundabout in tribute to the BBC children's programme of the same name, which ran from 1965 to 1977. Eventually, in the early 1980s, its nickname became its official name - thanks to David Glaholm, who introduced a motion formalising the name change during his time as a councillor in Swindon.
He said: "I'm just pleased that the name 'Magic Roundabout' has spread around the world, which means the name 'Swindon' has travelled around the world too."
Mr Glaholm was speaking in September 2024, after the Magic Roundabout was announced as the winner of the UK Roundabout of the Year award. UK Roundabout Appreciation Society chairman Kevin Beresford paid tribute to it, saying: "Something just amazing happens when you approach it. You're dazzled by all this choreography of cars."

Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious. ~ Peter Ustinov

(via Architype Tschichold - The Foundry Types)
Architype Tschichold is part of the Architype Universal collection. A set of avant garde typefaces deriving mainly from the work of artists and designers of the inter-war years, whose ideals underpin the design philosophies of the modernist movement in Europe. Their ‘universal’, ‘single alphabet’ theory limits the character sets.
Architype Tschichold is a faithful rendering of Jan Tschichold’s 1929 experimental alphabet which was influenced by Bayer’s single-alphabet. His design was never put into production. This re-creates his original geometrically constructed design, including some phonetic characters.

The italic version in particular is lovely to behold. Cavedoni added some extra speed to it from the Baskerville standard (giving it more slant), and made the lines more fluid. Look at those serifs on the top of the b, d, and h—it’s like the top of the convertible is down and their hair is being blown back.
Minimal? Not at all. The majuscules (capital letters) have ultra-sumptuous ball terminals (look at the capital K) that almost drip in front of your eyes. The minuscules (small letters) feel handwritten with their thin entry strokes, but the perfectly resolved rounded terminals on the bottom of the m and n demonstrate there’s no way they could have been created by hand with a pen. They appear machined.
“I think it’s as close to perfection as you can get,” says Ive, who confessed that he keeps a print of the italics at his desk.
(via After Apple, Jony Ive’s LoveFrom is doubling down on craft in typeface)
The individual letters are beautiful, Baskerville’s reliable but somewhat stilted weightiness ever so subtly transformed. But as one can see on LoveFrom,’s website with its statement set in this typeface, the kerning is somehow not right, especially with double letters (’ll’, ‘ss’, ‘mm’ etc.)
