Cat stared hesitantly at the Pokémon-like creature standing in front of her. This… well, thing didn’t sound exactly like a nice word to call… him? Well…

“A dog or a mouse or a bear, huh?” she mumbled under her breath as she tried to figure out this new enygma. She hadn’t seen any other Pokémon this whole time, which was super trippy, but now she was faced with someone who kinda looked like one, if it weren’t for the obviously human clothing. He looked almost like a Bewear, but… he was too off to be one. “And obviously not any of the other bear-like ones or mouse-like or dog-like ones…” Maybe scientists meddled and made him? That must be horrible… “Might even be the ones who held me ‘n Brigadier ‘n the rest…”

The… mouse-bear-dog just patiently stood there, waiting for her confused and broken rambling to end, seeing as she was going between thinking and speaking like everyone around her could understand her thoughts perfectly. And he looked like he did. Which was a little weird, but no more weird than any Psychic or Pokémon being able to read her mind, so…

“Sorry, what’s your name?” Cat asked sheepishly, realizing that, since this almost-Pokémon could speak, she could ask for his name. Darn, Brigadier would be so disappointed if she knew that Cat had forgotten her manners! Thankfully—but not thankfully at the same time, since she felt a little bit defenseless without her trusty partner at her side, even though she knew that she had other Pokémon to rely upon who were just as trustworthy and protective—Brigadier was away to scavenge their surroundings a bit more.

“My name is Nezu,” the… Nezu introduced himself. “And I’m the Principal of U.A. High School, where we teach aspiring hero-to-bes.”

Cat heard Brigadier huff slightly to her left after Nezu finished speaking, and she shifted to stand slightly behind the Pokémon, feeling infinitely safer once she did that. Nezu wasn’t even threatening her… not really, she didn’t think he was, at least. But she just felt safer with her Pokémon around.

“I’m Catherine,” Cat offered after a beat of silence, “and this is Brigadier.”

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you two,” Nezu inclined his head and… smiled at them? Cat felt like he should’ve been holding a cup of tea while doing that. It just felt like more his speed. “Now, I understand that the both of you have escaped from an illegal lab recently, and don’t have anywhere to go? I have a proposition for you two.”

“Uh… yes?” Cat half-asked, half-responded, unsure of what to say. Brigadier just stayed silent and stared at Nezu as intensely as she could. Which was pretty darn intensely.

Alex took a slow breath as he steadied his shaking hands from nerves shooting all over the place as his Boss hovered ominously over their shoulders. He wanted to snap at the guy and tell him to check all the calculations himself, but he didn’t dare do that.

Dear whatever God was out there… what did he do in his previous life to be given this try-hard of a Boss? Is he repenting for what sins he did? Hopefully he was… he just wanted out.

But nope, he just had to be the one chosen for this stupid portal job thing. If his Boss wanted the technology to create portals, why didn’t he just go to a Hero Agency and steal whatever shit they had there and had them start based on that instead of from scratch? Like, dude! Do your job correctly! Please. It really saved Alex some headaches.

Sadly, if he didn’t want to face the unfortunately permanent condition of getting a bullet to the brain, he had to do this stupid work that could’ve been prevented if Boss just had a brain.

Sighing overdramatically to himself in his brain—cause he didn’t dare do it out loud, nooooo, Mister Holy Grail Chosen One Boss ‘Sit Up Straighter’ Sir would have an aneurysm over that. Alex hoped he had an aneurysm soon. Or else he would have to take the chance and call a Hero Agency himself just to get that sweet sweet release of death and bring the Boss down with him.

God, why didn’t he just stay at home instead of going out with his shady ass friends?

Anyway, this stupid project the Boss wanted. Stupidly.

Alex pressed the button without a warning to anyone else, deciding that he wanted to feel like a jackass in this project because he was just that irritated. It’s not like the stupid thing would work anyway, he wasn’t even trying that hard, so it couldn’t possib—

A flash of light blinded everyone in the room suddenly, and a girl who couldn’t be over eleven at most plopped onto the floor in front of them gracelessly, clothed in weird-looking things with six balls attached to her belt.

“Shit,” Alex croaked out in shock. Looking around to see that everyone was looking at him blankly, he backpedaled immediately. “I mean, shit Boss, look, we did it! Yip yip hooray and all that jazz, am I right? Yay?”

“If you shut up, I’ll give you a promotion,” the Boss threatened Alex vaguely, barely even looking in his direction before he started barking orders at literally everyone else in the room. Wow. Alex really felt the love here, Boss. Totally mutual. “Get her on the table and strap her down! Confiscate her belt and backpack, check her for any weapons she might have on her! And for Hell’s sake, put the Quirk-suppressing restraints on her! We don’t know what we’re dealing with here, but it’s better to be safe rather than sorry!”

So, with another mental sigh, Alex started sorting through the backpack. But… it was weird. It… held more than it should?

“Is this thing a TARDIS?” he mumbled to himself in fascination, ignoring the irritated shout of “stop being an American!” from across the room. It wasn’t even an American show, God, like these people knew culture!

So he just functioned on autopilot, letting himself respond to quips and insults like he normally did… until the girl woke up. When the Hellhound—either her Quirk or a dog with a Quirk that just liked her… but what was that ball and how did it fit in there? Was that another Quirk? Did it manipulate the matter into a pocket dimension or something? He wanted to study it so badly—appeared in the room snarling and biting at everyone, he just stepped back and let everyone else get bitten… even the Boss.

Well, especially the Boss.

“The exit’s that way,” Alex pointed meekly down the hall. “Third door on your right, up the stairs, then head down the hall and take the second left and then the first right and there’ll be more stairs, and the passcode up there’s nine-nine-seven-two-five, and please don’t tell anyone I told you this, Boss already wants to murder me in a ditch for being annoying, so uh, sorry for bringing you here like this? It was an accident, really, I wasn’t even trying to get the calculations right, but I guess I did somehow? I’m so sorry!”

The Hellhound just watched him cautiously before seeming to accept his presence, just turning away but waiting for its rider to finish watching him. The little girl eventually tilted her head at him, muttered some gibberish under her breath—it sounded kinda close to Japanese, but it was as if it were some really really really weird dialect for it—and then patted the Hellhound’s head gently.

“Okay, so,” Cat sounded out loud mostly so she could get her thoughts straight, “we’re kinda in a bucket of shit here.” The Houndoom’s tail flicked slightly and tapped her cheek reprovingly, probably for her language. “Sorry, Brigadier Mom, sir,” she apologized sheepishly to the awaiting Houndoom before continuing. “We were… teleported? To somewhere weird with no Pokécenters. And nobody seems willing to bring their Pokémon out? They fight themselves instead with weird Pokémon-like moves, but more restricted. It’s weird. And where are we, really?”

Silence answered her, as Brigadier was the only one out of her Pokéball for now.

“Well, since it looks like we’re gonna be here for a while, I suppose we should get comfy,” she continued speaking aloud as she stacked the broken off tree branches strategically—just as she had learned. Once she was done, she looked up to see that Brigadier was awaiting her instructions, probably already knowing what she was going to ask. “Could you light this on fire please, Brigadier?”

The Houndoom complied easily, spitting out an easy Ember—didn’t want to go overkill, after all—before curling up cozily by the fire. She snagged the backpack and dragged it open, nuzzling her nose in there and somehow pulling out an Oran Berry, gesturing with her tail for her Trainer to pick it up. Cat complied obediently, wondering what her Pokémon wanted her to do with it. Maybe mash it up so it was easier for Brigadier to eat?

Brigadier watched her expectantly.

“You hungry?” Cat asked lamely, wondering what kind of Trainer didn’t know what their own Pokémon wanted.

Brigadier shook her head patiently, still watching.

“You want… me to eat it?” she guessed, feeling accomplished at last when her Houndoom nodded in an affirmative. But… “But these are for you guys,” she protested weakly, despite feeling the hunger creeping slightly in her stomach. She hadn’t eaten yet for the whole night before she was kidnapped and then however many hours it took to escape…

Brigadier just shot her the most deadpan and unimpressed stare a Houndoom could ever pull off. Cat promptly gave up and sat down next to the large Pokémon who was easily bigger than her, and thus generated more body heat to share. She ate the Berry gratefully, resolving to do something extra nice for Brigadier soon. And her other Pokémon too! But… but maybe, maybe tomorrow…

Cat winced as she registered the throbbing pain in her head. Dear Arceus, what time was it and just what did she do last night to have this dreadful headache…? Karen better have not snuck some of the Adult Berries into her food… really, Karen should know better, but sometimes Captain and Blitz just encouraged her despite the fact that they shouldn’t and then things just spiraled out of control, especially when Mischief got included.

A sharp, decidedly not friendly poke to the underside of her arm forced her consciousness up even more, and she opened her eyes to see a blank grey ceiling which was not where she went to sleep last night.

“Mmnghmph,” she mumbled disgruntledly, wondering who decided to try and kidnap her this time for her Pokémon. As she tried to turn her head to the side, she realized that her arms were tied down with metal restraints on a medical table. Waking up significantly more, she kicked her legs futilely, only to discover that they had the same treatment as her arms. Well… this was a difference from being tied down with rope. “Th’ fuck?”

A sharp light shined directly into her eyes immediately in response to her somewhat coherent words. “The subject seems to be an intelligent lifeform, Boss. Maybe we just happened to open a portal under some unfortunate kid?”

“Have you ever seen any kid with these weird contraptions, though?” another voice piped up from somewhere to Cat’s left. “Like this backpack, dude. I keep pulling and pulling things out and they just keep coming, man. This is at least like, the fiftieth bottle I’ve come across.”

“Careful, your American is coming through,” the first voice replied dryly.

“Get back to work and take those blood tests!” a new voice barked harshly. Probably this Boss person the first one was talking to. “And open one of those… strangely colored balls for experimentation.”

Cat barely had a second to protest before the familiar sound of a Pokéballs being opened and one of her partners jumping out with a loud growl occurred. By the feel of the wet nose against her arm and the screaming and teeth gnashing threateningly and the angry barking, it was definitely her Houndoom—Brigadier.
