An injection of low-stakes sweetness and sincerity from the mangaka who previously brought us the excellent Can't Defy the Lonely Girl. I have a particular weakness, in women's romance, for narratives about girls who feel inadequate due to their inability or failure to perform normative femininity in some way finding someone who loves the very thing for which they feel ashamed (of course, a girl with a low voice who secretly sings inside a literal closet brings an obvious interpretation; but the manga itself is mum on this point). If you're looking for a bright spring break from all that toxic yuri, then Howling Song is on my playlist for May 2026.

After finding a strange letter in a library book, a high school student begins a mutual "Class S" roleplay with a mysterious penpal, and tries to trace the origin of a generational mystery.

Earnest, vulnerable, romantic--intensely romantic, willing to be, in a way that makes one embarrassed. A story about winding through time, meeting your forebears, learning of their mistakes, their violence, their tragedies. I don't want to say any more, besides that I have read it three times, at one point said "jesus christ" out loud alone in my apartment, and sort of feel like I need to lay on the floor. Dear Flowers that Bloom in the Days of Yore is a love letter about love letters, and I'm writing it in as my yuri rec for April 2026.

A beggar girl becomes the close confidant of a nobleman's young wife, and finds herself enmeshed in schemes and secrets.

The type of story where the setting and time period is a character unto itself, the weight of history and misogyny pressing down on our characters from all corners, seeing who bears it gracefully, or ungracefully, or can't bear it at all, or who finds a means to escape it. Women who are granted so little power and selfhood that they spend their days fighting and biting and hating and killing each other for every little scrap they can get. And, of course, the ones who fall in love despite it all. For girls fighting to escape their own folktale, Shim Chong has to be my yuri rec for March 2026.

Do you love it when women are over 30? Pink Candy Kiss is a manga of delicious agony and achingly sweet sincerity. I have no choice but to make it my yuri rec for February 2026.

In one of their commentaries, the mangaka states that they're always disappointed to see a story end as soon as the couple gets together; that they're far more interested in what comes after, in the messy, complicated dynamic of two people in a relationship. And it shows, in a story that lives in messiness, in break-ups and make-ups and hurt feelings, in jealously and compatibility and sex. How Do We Relationship? never stops feeling earnest and grounded, and its characters do everything wrong for reasons you can't help but understand completely. For anyone who needed a long-runner to binge over the holidays, How Do We Relationship? is my yuri rec for December 2025.

A woman tracks down her old high school classmate, a lesbian she knows was always in love with her, and manipulates her into killing her abusive husband.

This one isn't for the faint of heart; mind the warnings. No one in this story is happy. No one is healthy, no one is wise, and nothing ends well. Women throw their lives away and cling to each other in the aftermath. But there's something compelling, about acts done out of desperation, of trying to survive together after you've already destroyed each other. And there's nothing more yuri than that, which is why Gunjo is my yuri rec for November 2025.

Satsuki can foresee a person's death 24 hours in advance, and her frantic, seemingly-bizarre attempts to prevent her premonitions have given her a reputation as a liar and a creep. But when she saves the life of one particular classmate, the change in fate sets off a series of events no one could have predicted.

Liar Satsuki reads sort of like a murder mystery series, but where you start with the corpse and work your way backwards towards preventing the death. Woven through these deadly procedurals is the story of a human absol finally finding people who believe her; of bruised and battered misfits finding relief and safety in each other. A pile of phantom corpses makes Liar Satsuki Can See Death a suitably spooky yuri rec for October 2025.

A timid writer is swept away by an overdramatic transfer student who wants to perform her stories.

I read a lot of yuri, and as with everything, a lot of it is chaff. So it's very exciting to open something new and know within the first few pages that what you are reading is, simply, very good. The mundane-sounding school life premise hides a story about self-loathing, of a low self-esteem which folds itself smaller and smaller and another which loudly becomes someone else. Reading Curtain Call felt like a breath of fresh air, so I must do it the honor of becoming my yuri rec for September 2025.

Princess of Sylph is a story of yuri persevering--it was cancelled by the publisher after volume 3, but the author continued it independently. And I'm really glad they did. Princess is cute, funny, well-crafted, sincere, and worth seeing through to the end. A labor of love makes The Flower Princess of Sylph my yuri rec for August 2025.

The rules don't say I can't throw in a western comic once in while. Sex, drugs, rock 'n roll, a pop princess, a punk heartbreaker, childhood friends, controlling managers, harsh industries, and messy, complicated lesbians with messy, complicated feelings. Heartstrings is an easy pick for our yuri rec for July 2025.

A short, sweet, Meiji-era romance of deception and class disparity; sweetness laced with tragedy and lies. My only regret is that it isn't longer. The scent of summer flowers makes False Marigold my yuri rec for June 2025.
