If there's one thing no one tells you about becoming an idol, it's how small the world gets. How everyone knows everyone.Â
How one day, you're dancing in your bedroom and the next, you're sharing a waiting room with the one person who ruined your teenage years and pretends not to know it like it's a casual Friday.Â
My group and Le Sserafim were scheduled for the same variety shoot today after our debut performance—something casual and fast for HYBE's YouTube channel. Something quick to help introduce us as a group for the fans. Just games, light interviews, and team interactions. The kind of thing fans love and go crazy for.
The kind of thing I was dreading. The kind of thing that is going to make me go crazy.
The staff had split us into mixed teams for a "friendly bonding segment." Of course they did. And of course I end up on the same team as her because why not
She's sitting across from me now, cross-legged on the floor of the set, joking with who I assume is Kazuha while lightly tossing a toy microphone between her hands. Like this is just another schedule. Like I'm just another face.
Not the one who used to hold her secrets. Not the one she left behind. Here I go again with the reminiscing. Reminiscing the past she obviously doesn't give a shit about. Excuse my language. It's just so surreal, watching her and being this up close to her again. Same voice, same laugh—just deeper now, polished by years of training and cameras and everything I wasn't part of. Everything she didn't want me apart of.Â
She doesn't look at me, but I feel it every time her eyes skim past, every time our knees almost touch when we're asked to scoot closer for framing.
"Can you sit a little more to the left, Y/N?" a staff member asks.
I shuffle over, barely brushing Yunjin's side. She doesn't flinch. Doesn't move. Just stays perfectly still.
God, she really doesn't remember does she? Is 7 years long enough to forget your former best friend?Â
"Action!"
The shoot starts. We play some dumb word games, take turns answering questions about each other's members. Sophia's laughing next to me, trying to guess Manon's favorite drink. The camera's on us, and I smile when I'm supposed to. Nod. Laugh.
I'm not really there.
The producer asks a question: "What kind of friend are you in the group?"
I answer automatically, "The quiet one until I'm not."
"So true Y/n doesn't know how to shut up sometimes." Lara says laughing as my other members agree and laugh as well.
The producer smiles and turns to Yunjin. She tenses up but still answers. Her answer is different than what I remember her being back then. "I think I'm the one who hypes everyone up," she says, her smile easy. "But also, I like listening. I remember a lot of little things about people."
I freeze and try to hold back my eyes from rolling to the back of my head.Â
Do you? I have to hold myself back from saying this out loud.Â
How can she even say that? Remember the little things? Does she even remember me?
Laughter erupts around me at some joke I didn't hear. I was too busy cursing Yunjin in my head. I muster up a laugh trying my best to fit into the moment. I feel eyes on my as I laugh. I glance sideways. She's looking at me now—just briefly. But this time, it's different. Her expression flickers. A pause. Like she's trying to place something. And for a moment, the air between us tightens. Then she looks away. Of all things, does she remember my laugh?
I stare down at my lap, nails digging into my palm to control myself from bursting out. I can't tell what's worse—if she genuinely forgot about me or if she didn't and is just pretending.
Either way, it absolutely pains my soul.Â
After the shoot, I head toward the hallway to grab my bag when I hear footsteps behind me.
"Hey."
Her voice.
I stop. Turn slowly.
She's standing a few feet back, still in full stage makeup, but quieter now. More real.
"I—" she starts, then hesitates. "You look really familiar. Did we..."
I force a smile. Cold. Controlled.
"No," I lie. "You don't know me."
And I walk away before she can say anything else.Â
"Wow harsh as fuck." Lara says walking beside me, a grin plastered on her face.Â
I don't respond, trying to change the subject.
"We barely met the girl why so rude?" She asks again nudging me.
I shrug. "It's nothing really. I didn't mean to sound rude." Yes I did.
Lara raises an eyebrow but doesn't question it. "Okay. But can I at least know if you're good? You've been kinda.. well I don't wanna pry but you've been intense since this morning. I know we just debuted today and all but you were chill until Le Sserafim walked in."
I pause.
"I'm fine, just didn't expect to see our seniors so soon."
She nods, accepting the half-truth.
"Yeah, makes sense," she says. "I had to talk myself out of puking twice before we went on. But hey—we killed it, right?"
"Yea," I say with a smile. "We did."
"Oh, and by the way," she adds with a smirk, "when we get to the dorm, you better tell me all the drama with Yunjin."
I freeze slightly.
Lara just keeps grinning. "I'm not dumb, Y/N." She grins, satisfied, and skips ahead to join Megan and Manon by the van. I hang back for a second, letting the evening air cool my skin.
