Alas, I wouldnât say Iâve âreturnedâ as this blog is still on hiatus. The few missing comics (Hinata, Ukai, etc) have already been cleaned, but are missing the translation and typesetting. Especially the latter is a pain and takes forever. orz

Hello! Iâm sorry if youâve ever answered this before but I couldnât seem to find it. If you donât mind me asking what do you use to translate? I wasnât sure if it was done with a specific app/program or not. I recently bought some kareshi and I know people have posted their own translations of some of the ones I bought but Iâd really love to translate them too! So any tips or tricks would be helpful! I donât really know much Japanese and my knowledge of it is extremely limit.

I donât use any specific programs/apps to translate; I can read Japanese just fine! (ŕšâ˘â¨ď¸â˘ŕš) Sometimes, I struggle with some unknown kanjis and those cases I tend to rely on jisho.org. For unknown words my online dictionary of choice is goo.
Honestly, my best tip is to keep studying and improve your Japanese skills. Relying on programs and apps to do the translation part for you is ill-advised, especially if you plan on posting those translations for others to see, and even more so if you donât inform them of your use of machine translations (although itâs not as âbadâ with the Kareshi anthologies since they donât contain official canon material anyway so there is no real risk of spreading misinformation). (;´ｼĎｼď˝)
While machine translations like Google can help you get the gist of the story, it is imho not accurate enough to use it to properly translate stuff for others to read. A machine translator is not capable of grasping context, nor can it distinguish nuances, tones and intentions. Also, Iâm not sure how well those translation programs fare with SFXs, informal speech and slang. And donât even get me started on wordplays and puns...
Of course this is just my personal opinion, and I can neither stop you from posting machine translations nor do I intend to gatekeep anything here! but perhaps itâs a good idea to have a beta reader with a decent grasp of the language at least?

Do not use those programs if you plan on posting those âtranslationsâ for others to see (especially if your knowledge is extremely limited as you claim since youâd have no idea whether the translation is completely off or not), or at least have the courtesy to inform your readers about it.

Itâs definitely a language I wanted to pick up learning again so it was something I thought would be fun to translate and also weirdly enough help me grasp the language better? If I did decide to share I definitely would give that heads up or even just like you suggested using a beta reader who has a farther grasp of the language than I do. All of this is definitely something Iâm going to take and keep in mind! I think for now I would do the beta reader or even just keep what I translate to myself until I have a better understanding of the language so I can make corrections as I learn!
Translating the Kareshi anthologies for fun would definitely help you get a better grasp of the language, provided you have the basic grammar down. And because these mangas are quite simple and have little text, I think they are great for exercising and improving!
And hereâs my favorite tip for if you ever start feeling de-motivated or frustrated with your learning progress: Keep your first translations attempts somewhere and/or remember which Kareshi anthology you started with. And after, letâs say after 6 months or even 1 year, go re-read that book. Youâll notice that you have a much easier time reading it. Heck, you might even ask yourself how you could have struggled so much with it in the beginning, haha.
Even if you only study for 5 minutes a day, as long as you do it regularly your Japanese skills will improve!

As some of you might have noticed, this blog has become rather slow and quiet in the past few months. And sadly, it will continue to be so for a few more.
I apologize to everyone who went through the trouble of sending me an ask or a DM just for it to go unanswered for so long. orz
The reason is that Iâll take my certification exams this summer so most of my free time goes into studying, studying and studying. _(:3 ăâ ď¸)_ Occasionally, I do take some time off to relax but during those times Iâd rather do stuff where I donât have to think much.
But once all exams are taken and passed, and once I find an employment somewhere Iâll be back to scanlating! will people even still be interested in HQ Kareshi when that time comes...?
The current estimate for my return is late August/early September! But uhm, if I fail or canât find a job in time the hiatus will of course have to be prolonged;;

Do you have the HQ BF anthology and if so what do you think about it? Is it basically the same as HQ kareshi but from different publisher?
Do you have any tips for scanning the books? All your scans are really clean, do you debind your book for that?
I really prefer digital version of doujins cause my bookcase is full to the brim, too bad the doujins are not available digitally đĽ˛

To answer your question: Yes, I do have the HQBF anthologies! In fact, I own the complete collection, hehe. ( â˘Ěâď¸â˘Ě )â§ď¸ Youâre right, it is basically the same as HQ Kareshi as they focus on character x reader pairings but just from a different publisher, however there are also some differences.

The first major difference are the panels.
In HQ Kareshi you have the same 4 panel pages around 99,9% of the time (including the ones where they combine two panels to create a bigger one), but in HQBF the panel order is left up to the artists and thus it looks more much like a âregularâ manga.
Another big difference is that while HQ Kareshi seems to have a strict 2nd p.o.v. policy, HQBF is much more lenient so some comics are drawn in 3rd p.o.v. and thus also show the reader!character (aka â(you)â). The reader!charactersâ/(your) faces are always covered, but hair style, clothes and skin color can still be seen which could be pretty immersion-breaking for some, because it makes self-inserting much more difficult. Iâll post some examples below the Read More.*
Not every artist depicts (you) though, so there are also comics where itâs strictly 2nd p.o.v..
HQ Kareshi anthologies also have this cool âfeatureâ where the backside of the cover has illustrations of the guys with scratch off panels! Underneath the scratch off panels are phrases that the guys say to (you).
To give an example: the Kiss Kiss anthologyâs cover shows the guys kabedonâing* you. Some of them are super embarrassed and others are quite smooth and it shows in their speech. lmao
Another example: the Childhood Friend anthology has some sort of personality quiz where it shows which guy you are more compatible with. (although itâs only limited to 6 characters IIRC)
** kabedon = basically, when a person corners you against the wall with one hand (or both) against the wall; often used in a romantic(????) situation
A small difference between those two series is that -because of their publishing period- HQBF covers âmoreâ characters whereas HQ Kareshi focuses more on characters that appear early on (Kunimi, Kindaichi, Futakuchi, etc). HQ Kareshiâs last anthology was released in early 2017; HQBF on the other hand ran until mid 2017. As such, HQBF also has comic with Atsumu and Sakusa and my beloved Mattsun ⥠for example, who are (as far as I know) all missing from HQ Kareshi series.
If both series had run longer, Iâm sure weâd have seen lots of delicious Inarizaki comics. orz I just want a crumb of Osamu... pls,,,, (´â˘ĚĽĎâ˘ĚĽď˝)ăă
And finally, HQ Kareshi has some comics with colored pages! Not every anthology has them, but the âbiggerâ ones such as Childhood Friend or Wedding certainly do. HQBF only has the regular black-white pages for all their anthologies.ăă
There is one more thing, though Iâm not sure if this is relevant to you, but the paper quality is imo better in HQ Kareshi. HQBF uses regular paper that you can find in every manga, and HQ Kareshiâs paper is much smoother and âwhiterâ.

Personally, I prefer HQ Kareshi (or the +Kareshi anthologies in general) because of its 2nd p.o.v. approach and how sometimes you have follow-up comics instead of only stand-alone ones. But HQBF anthologies are still pretty fun to read! Especially the love triangle anthologies... đ

Regarding my scans: 100 points to you! You are right, I did debind my book in order to get such clean scans! Hereâs a post where I briefly talk about my scanning process.
Maybe this kind of clean scan is also possible with a proper scanner but youâd have to press reeeaally hard and could break the booksâ spines in the process (this method should work fine with thin doujins tho).

I prefer physical copies of my books since I wouldnât have to worry about websites or so shutting down and taking all my purchases with them. But you are completely right in that they take up a looot of space. Iâve run out of storage space as well, haha- OTL

Translatorâs note: Thank you, Tumblr, for hiding this post from the tags/search and for crashing every time I tried to post the entire common route prologue. :â) I sure hope dividing the prologue in two and thus reducing the amount of images per post will finally let me publish this.
Anyway, yes, this is indeed a fan-made Haikyuu otome game featuring the Seijoh boys! (minus Kindaichi lol) Youâll meet Oikawa and Iwaizumi in the next part that will hopefully be posted tomorrow.
For now, Iâve only planned on translating the prologue/introduction scene! The demo goes beyond that, but tbh itâs really troublesome to take screenshots of every single screen and editing the translation into them individually. It would be faster to just post a screenshot or two and type out the entire scene beneath it, but then youâd miss out the sprites. I mean, you are already missing out on some stuff that canât be included in simple screenshots...
However, if there is someone out there who knows a thing or two about patching visual novels and wouldnât mind lending me a hand... đ

It was such a pain to do this comic. Such a pain!! (âŹď¸ à ⸠Ă) Thereâre just way too many different fonts and SFXs used here; time and time again I was tempted to just leave everything as it is and translate only the text bubbles, but every time I did the result looked so half-assed and incomplete so at the end of the day I went all out again. Îľ-(ďź-Ď-ď˝A) However, Bokutoâs comic here is so good and spicy that it was totally worth the effort. I, too, would love to play the Pocky game with Bokuto...
Short explanation regarding the little kissing game: The Pocky game is played with two people. Both of them will place one end of the same pocky in their mouth and slowly eat away at it until they reach the middle. Donât let the Pocky drop or break midway through. The first player to turn away âlosesâ. If no player pulls away early, they will meet in the middle with a kiss. âĄ
P.S.: Did anyone notice that (you)âve saved Bokuto as âOwlâ in (your) phone (see 1st page, 1st panel)? lmao I even triple-checked to make sure I didnât misread the kanji, but it really says ć˘ (fukurou; Owl in English).

Translatorâs note: A snowy comic for the winter season! âď¸ And so, the 4th season of Haikyuu ends. Even though I already knew how it would end, I was still full of anticipation until the very end. v(￣âď¸ďżŁ ;;) Still, I really really wish both teams couldâve won.
