Your Weekend Travel had the opportunity to fly from London Gatwick Airport to New York John F Kennedy Airport onboard Norse Atlantic Airways back in March 2023. Luckily, you can take a train from London to Gatwick, which takes 40 to 50 minutes.We ended up taking the Gatwick Express from London Victoria Station. We ordered an Uber from our hotel and were dropped off at the station. An elevator brought us to the actual train platform, where the Gatwick Express was waiting for us. The train ride was a breeze, it was an early morning train so we essentially had an entire train car to ourselves.We arrived at London Gatwick Airport at 8:30 am with plenty of time to check in, get through security, and have breakfast before our 12:50 PM flight with Norse Atlantic Airways.Checking In at Norse Atlantics AirwaysBeing from the United States, it was the customary norm to arrive at the airport with ample amount of time to avoid long lines in security or issues with checking in. We arrived early at the Norse Atlantics Airways check-in desk and notice that no one was working. There were empty seats normally filled by airline agents. We found an employee to ask them if we were in the correct place for check-in and they let us know that our flight was the first flight of the day and that Norse’s check-in process doesn’t start until three hours before our departure time.Essentially, we were forced to wait over an hour online to get checked in. We weren’t the only people that arrived early. Several people were queueing with us. There was a lot of displeasure amongst the growing crowd.The check-in agents finally arrived at exactly 9:50 am and began to check people in. Ironically, we weren’t the first people to be seen as the priority access line opened before ours and a family walked to the front of the priority access line, got checked in, and went on with their day. Nonetheless, our check-in process besides the inconvenient wait went fairly smoothly.Something to note is that you cannot check in early the day before online or through their app. You have to check in at the desk. This is something that Norse Atlantic Airways needs to address especially when they decide to add more routes and grow in popularity in the future.Norse Atlantic Airways Flight InformationThe flight from London Gatwick Airport to New York John F Kennedy International Airport on board Norse Atlantic Airways is roughly 3500 miles. Total flight time on average is six hours and twenty minutes. The flight time largely depends on how strong the headwinds are across the Atlantic Ocean since you are flying against the jetstream.The route brings you across England & Ireland and then a straight dash across the Atlantic Ocean to Newfoundland. Then you follow the Atlantic Coast down until you land in New York.Norse Atlantic Airways Boeing 787-900The flight from London to New York on Norse Atlantic Airways is performed by the Boeing 787-900 Dreamliner. This is Boeing’s newest widebody aircraft launched commercially in 2011.The Dreamliner is super fuel efficient making it one of the most eco-friendly aircraft to fly on today. One interesting thing to note about the aircraft is its wings. We were very fascinated by the wide flex on this aircraft during takeoff and at cruise altitude. It resembled very much of a wing flex you would see on a glider.The seating configuration on Norse’s 787 Dreamliner was a 3 by 4 by 3 in the economy class.In the premium class, it was a 2 by 3 by 2. The 787-900 can fit close to 350 passengers.Norse Atlantic Airways Flight AmenitiesNorse Atlantic Airways SeatsWe had the privilege of selecting our seats near the window in the economy class. Since it was a row of three seats, we did have to sit next to a stranger. Overall, the seats on board Norse Atlantic Airways 787 were very comfortable. As a nearly 6-foot-tall individual, there was plenty of legroom space. An interesting characteristic of the seats was the window shades. You were able to adjust the window shades to various degrees of dark, from pitch black to fully transparent. So if you wanted to get some sleep, you were able to make the windows opaque so no light can come through. The In-flight MealWith your economy class ticket purchase, you get only one in-flight meal. Norse Atlantic Airways follows a business model just like Spirit Airlines where any service has to come with a purchase since Norse is a low-budget transcontinental airline. The food was good. You had a meat option and a vegetarian option. We opted for the meat option and it was a dish containing chicken and rice. This meal came along with a complimentary soft drink as well. Alcohol had to be purchased separately.Besides the meal service, you were not served anything else unless you ordered from the menu. If you’re prone to get hungry or are traveling with small children, you might want to perhaps buy some snacks to bring with you on the plane.The In-flight EntertainmentNorse Atlantic Airways' inflight entertainment system was pretty standard. It offered information about the airline, television shows, movies, and an inflight tracker.The movie lineup was pretty satisfactory. We watched two movies during the flight, which made it go by very quickly. The inflight tracker for plane enthusiasts left much to be desired. You couldn’t see where you were. All you saw was a timeline from the time you took off to the time you landed. Not worth watching the entire flight.The Overall Flight ReviewThe flight overall wasn’t too shabby. We took off from London Gatwick without any issues. They began serving dinner once we leveled out at our cruise right over the Atlantic Ocean. However, we began to experience significant turbulence which made us question whether they were going to suspend meal service. They ended up continuing to serve meals but the captain left the seatbelt sign on.Throughout our journey across the Atlantic, we did encounter pockets of severe turbulence. However, we felt very safe on board the Boeing 787-900. The captain changed altitude, and reduced speed, but seem to not be able to get out of the bad air at times. He was very professional about it, and several times came on the intercom to give us an update.Arrival at New York JFK International AirportWe began our descent right off the coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Our flight path took us right over the North Fork of Long Island, across to the South Shore, and then up again where we followed the Northern State Parkway into Kennedy Airport. The landing was pretty solid. We taxied to our gate but couldn’t get off the plane for a length of time. When we were able to deplane, we made our way to United States Customs which was a disaster of disorganization. People from England were getting their passports checked at the United States passport-only line. The overall time for us to get through customs took almost an hour. Welcome back to America.Final Review and ThoughtsOur experience flying aboard Norse Atlantic Airways from London Gatwick Airport to New York John F Kennedy Airport was a decent one.Norse Atlantic is a newer airline so there are some kinks they need to work out before they begin to expand. Your Weekend Travel made its way to Europe and detailed the experience of flying from New York to Amsterdam aboard Aer Lingus.The trip was broken up into two flights, one flight was nonstop from New York to Dublin and the other was from Dublin to Amsterdam.The overall trip experience was very good. We highly recommend using Aer Lingus for flying to Europe. In this flight review, we will separately review the flight from each leg, analyzing the best qualities and some of the not-so-great aspects of the trip.Planning and Booking our Flight from New York to AmsterdamThe story of booking our flight to Amsterdam was very interesting. We initially booked a flight on Condor Airlines direct from New York to Frankfurt, Germany. We were then supposed to fly on Lufthansa Airlines from Frankfurt to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. However, on the way to JFK Airport, we received an email from Condor Airlines saying that our flight to Frankfurt was delayed due to a pending transit strike in Germany. It became very clear that we were most likely going to be missing our connecting flight to Amsterdam and be stuck in Germany.We took action immediately and decided to purchase a new flight on Aer Lingus at the last moment. They were the only airline with seats available on a flight that would get us to Amsterdam on time, not affecting some of our planned activities.In-flight Experience from New York to Dublin on Aer LingusSeating on Aer Lingus Airbus A330 Since we purchased our flight last minute, we were unfortunately relegated to the middle seats in the middle column of the Airbus A330.We were flying in economy class which is set up as a 2 - 4 - 2 on the Aer Lingus Airbus A330.The seats were our biggest complaint about our entire journey to Dublin. They were very small and uncomfortable. The legroom was very minimal. Our backs and body ached towards the end of the flight. We looked forward to getting off the airplane to stretch our legs out fully.Flight Conditions from New York to DublinBesides the issues with the seating, the flight was smooth and pleasant. We had a long taxi at JFK airport, which is typical. We took off successfully even after a noticeable bang just as we lifted which sounded like it came from the landing gear. It must have been baggage shifting in the cargo hold.But after takeoff, there were hardly any bumps or turbulence. In-flight amenities on Aer LingusFree Blankets, Pillows, and HeadphonesOn arrival to our seats, Aer Lingus provides everyone with a pillow and blanket. Since it was a red-eye flight, it was nice of them to provide these especially if you planned on getting some sleep on the way.They also provided headphone jacks for use in their flight entertainment system. More to come on that.Complementary Meal Service - Dinner & BreakfastWhen we approached our cruise altitude, Aer Lingus began their meal service. You have three options, chicken, salmon, or vegetation. We tried the chicken option.The dish tasted very good. It was grilled chicken in red sauce, with rice. There also was a piece of bread, chocolate mousse dessert, and a carton of water. As we approached Dublin, they gave us another complementary meal, this time it was a muffin and orange juice. The orange juice was some of the best-tasting juice I’ve ever had. But it was nice they were able to give us two complementary meals on our flight.Flight Entertainment CenterEach seat had an inflight entertainment system. It had lots of options including movies, tv shows, music, podcasts, and games. Throughout the flight I mostly watched the flight tracking map, but tried to watch the movie “Amsterdam” but halfway through had a hard time following the plot and gave up.The only gripe about the entertainment system was the headphone jack ports. They didn’t seem to work too well, as sometimes you had to adjust your headphone wire in the port to ensure the sound comes out of each headphone.On-time performanceA great thing about our flight to Dublin was that we arrived well ahead of schedule. The flight was supposed to have us landing in Dublin a quarter after 4 am Irish Time. However, we landed close to an hour earlier than expected at around 3:30 am Irish time. This was important to us because it eliminated the worry of missing our connecting flight. With the earlier-than-anticipated arrival, we now had plenty of time to wait before they started boarding our next flight.Arrival Experience at Dublin AirportOur route took us right off the coast of Iceland and down to Ireland.It was very dark out and since we were in the middle column of seats, it was hard to get a good view out of the window.From what we did see, it was cloudy, damp, and misty outside. Our plane slowed down, the cabin crew prepared the passengers for landing and we touched down in what we can consider one of the best landings we’ve ever experienced. The pilot put the Airbus down very softly and we came to a very quick stop.We had a 5-minute taxi from the runway to the terminal. Once we deplaned, we were ushered to our connecting flight, and with one scan of our boarding pass, we were waiting at our gate. Overall, it was a pleasant arrival experience.In-flight Experience from Dublin to Amsterdam on Aer LingusOur connecting flight was also on Aer Lingus and it was service from Dublin to Amsterdam. It was about 6 am Irish Time and the flight was scheduled to get us into Amsterdam Schipol Airport at around 8 am Irish Time.It was a relatively short flight which was truly welcomed as we began to feel drained from the overnight transatlantic flight. Our aircraft was an Airbus A320 which has always been a personal favorite to fly on.Overall Flight ExperienceConsiderably Crowded Flight to AmsterdamThe flight to Amsterdam was surprisingly crowded on an early Sunday morning. It could have been a result of it being spring break and Amsterdam is a popular tourist attraction to the 18 - 30-year-old audience.We were seated towards the back of the plane with seats across the aisle. We noticed there was one empty row in the back, and after the flight attendants ensured everyone was accounted for on the flight, we politely asked to move to the empty row, which they obliged.Our Departure from DublinOn pushback and engine start, there was this very pronounced smell of jet fuel. Not sure if was because we were flying on an older Airbus A320 or if someone mishandled and spill jet fuel on the tarmac.It was a short taxi to the runway and we were off to Amsterdam. We had a beautiful morning view of Dublin as we climbed out.Cruising Over the United KingdomOnce we reached cruising altitude over the Irish Sea, the cabin crew provided some water and coffee. That was just about it since it was too short of a flight to have a full breakfast entree at the ready.We flew over Liverpool, Manchester, and London. I noticed on several occasions how much air traffic was with us by looking at the contrails and even some of the close calls. On at least two occasions we were within a few miles of an oncoming aircraft. Close enough to make out what airline the plane was.It was a very cloudy flight for the most part, we were basically out of view of the ground and sea from Dublin until we started our descent into Amsterdam over the English Channel. We were provided a quick glimpse of ferry traffic heading into the mainland of Europe.Arrival experience at Amsterdam Schipol AirportApproach and Arrival at Amsterdam Airport SchipholOnce we broke through the cloud layer descending into Amsterdam, we saw views of The Hague and the Netherland shoreline. We were then again dipping inside and out of clouds until we were fully enveloped in a cloud layer.We were on final for landing and broke out of the cloud bank only a mere hundred feet above the runway threshold and landed a bit roughly. The views coming out of the cloud layer were beautiful with the Green Netherland grass being the first thing the eye saw.The aircraft taxied quickly to the gate. We were deplaned and made our way to Netherland Customs. Getting Through Customs at Amsterdam Airport SchipholThe experience in customs was extremely efficient. There were 6 counters where people could get their passports stamped. The line was very long but we got through customs within 15 to 20 minutes.After we passed through customs, we went to the baggage claim to find our bags. We then had to catch an Uber to get us to Amsterdam. Amsterdam Schipol Airport looks like a shopping mall, it has very high ceilings and many stores that you can shop in. Overall, the arrival experience was very pleasant as well.Final Thoughts on Aer Lingus Flight from New York to AmsterdamOur flight experience from New York to Amsterdam on Aer Lingus was a pretty good one considering the trouble we could have gotten into flying to Germany as our original plan suggested.Flying transatlantic from New York to Dublin was great. The entire Aer Lingus staff made the flight very smooth and headache free.The flight out of Dublin to Amsterdam did the trick as well. We arrived on time. If given the option to fly again on Aer Lingus, we definitely would and recommend you do the same!

There are plenty of shops that provide bike rentals for the day if you prefer to get to locations A to B very quickly.However, if you do opt to use public transportation, the tram service in Amsterdam is superb. Just about every street in Amsterdam has a tram line servicing it every few minutes. The tram also uses a tap-in/tap-out system you can use Apple Pay on your phone to pay for your ride share. No need to go to get a transportation pass. The fair is very cheap as well. It’s only a few cents per stop. The full fare for one of the tram lines was about $6. Amsterdam Locals are Very Accommodating Another benefit Amsterdam has compared to some cities when traveling solo is the friendliness of the locals. They are more than willing to help you out if you ask which is something you can’t expect in most cities, like New York City.If you’re English-speaking, just about everyone can communicate in English so you won’t have an issue getting directions or ordering food. Much of the signage is also in English, along with Dutch. Restaurants often have an English menu as well as a Dutch menu.The local shops are very patient with you when you trying to figure out the money situation with the Euro. They will help you count your money. Tips for Solo Travel in AmsterdamSafety Tips for Solo Travel in AmsterdamDuring our stay in Amsterdam, we only noticed one police car. It can be safe to assume that Amsterdam is a fairly safe city. But you should remain vigilant just like you would in any city. One main concern we had was dealing with pickpocketers. Since there’s lots of foot traffic around the city significantly comprised of tourists, the risk of being pickpocketed is very high. We didn’t have any trouble or notice anyone at risk of being pickpocketed but we did take some precautions. One thing we did was keep our passports locked away in the hotel. No need to carry that on you when walking around. Also, keep your wallet and phone in a fanny pack or a location not in your pants pocket, like a jacket pocket close to your chest. Public Transportation Tips for Solo Travel in AmsterdamAs already mentioned, Amsterdam functions on mostly four modes of transportation, electric vehicles, bikes, buses, and trams.You need to keep your head on a swivel while walking around in Amsterdam. Unsuspecting pedestrians can be hit by any of these vehicles and cause serious injury.One thing to note is that people drive in the right lane in Amsterdam. So if you’re used to traffic coming from left to right, you should alright. If not, you need to look left before you cross the street. There are not many sidewalks on some of the side streets but you should remain to the right to avoid being hit by a bike. Bikers will not slow down for you, but they will try to get your attention when you’re in the way by ringing the bell on their bike.The tram is very hard to miss when it comes down the streets. But one thing to keep in mind is the tap system to pay for the fair. Make sure you tap out when you leave the tram. You can use apple pay to begin paying for your fare when you get on the tram. If you get off the tram without paying, you will be charged the fair for the entire system. It equates to about 4 Euros if you forget to tap out of the tram.Tipping Another thing to worry about while traveling solo in Amsterdam is paying for food at restaurants and tipping.In Europe, for the most part, you do not need to include a tip as it already comes added to your bill as a service charge. However, several restaurants did not include a service charge in Amsterdam you should probably leave some money to tip if you enjoyed the service.But there are reviews on Yelp on some restaurants that prey on tourists that are not aware of the service charge being on the bill. They will complain that you didn’t tip even though there was a service just to guilt you into tipping and to earn a couple of extra euros from you.Avoid these restaurants at all costs. Please head over to Yelp and check out the reviews before you reserve a table at a restaurant. 99% of the restaurants will not take advantage of you but there are documented cases of over-tipping occurring.Weather Tips The weather in Amsterdam varies depending on the time of year. From October to March, the weather is a bit damp, cold, and dreary. During the spring and summer months, it can be quite warm and pleasant.During our trip to Amsterdam, the weather was very cold and windy. Make sure you check the weather before you start your travel so you know how to properly dress.When it’s soggy, rain boats and a rain jacket might be worth bringing. During the better days, be sure to dress comfortably as you’ll be walking outside.Top Things to Do for Solo Travelers in AmsterdamAnne Frank HouseThe Anne Frank House Tour is a must-do if you come to Amsterdam on a solo trip. Even if you are not a fan of history, it’s important to understand the role the Nazi occupation played on the Netherlands and Amsterdam during World War Two. Amsterdam was called home to well over half of the Netherlands’ Jewish population during this time, and about 70% of them were unfortunately killed during the Holocaust.Anne Frank and members of her family were part of the people that were killed during the war. Her role in history was during the Nazi occupation, she kept a diary that outlined her day-to-day life while she hid from the Nazis in a warehouse in Amsterdam. Her diary has been published in 60 different languages and is featured reading in my schools around the world.The location where she hid, is now a museum that you can tour. The house has been left in the same condition it was during the 1940s minus all the furniture at the request of Anne Frank’s dad. The tour is a guided audio tour that features many exhibits about the Nazi's occupation and persecution of Amsterdam’s Jewish population. You can truly experience what life was like for Anne and her family.Anne Frank House is a truly eye-opening experience. Everyone that travels to Amsterdam should dedicate some time during their trip to pay a visit. Windmill, Clogs Factory, Cheese Tour in Zaanse SchansIf you’re looking for an excursion outside of the actual city of Amsterdam, we recommend you check out the Zaanse Schans and check out how life is outside of the city.Zaanse Schans is a real town located several minutes out of Amsterdam proper. It is a living museum consisting of small townhouses on canals, windmills of various sizes, a clog factory as well as a cheese and chocolate shop. There are various tour groups that you can sign up for and provide you transportation from the city of Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans. The tour helps you learn about the importance of canals in Netherlands society and their many functions like washing laundry and as an outhouse. You will also explore why houses were built the way they were - the houses are wooden so they don’t sink into the mud. You will then learn about windmills and their role in the Netherlands' economy. They were used to make everything from flour, chocolate, and paint pigment.At the clogs factory, you will walk past a museum exhibit of many of the different types of clogs made over the years including a Michael Jackson bedazzled-out clog. You can sit in on a short clog-making show where a worker demonstrates how to make clogs using modern-day technology. Finally, there is a museum gift shop where you can purchase your own set of clogs to bring home.There is also tours of chocolate and cheese-making factory available. You can go inside each and learn how both delicacies are made. There are gift shops available where you can purchase your cheese or drink some hot chocolate (especially useful in our case because it was very chilly outside).Canal Cruise of AmsterdamIf you’re trying to take Amsterdam by boat, check out Flagstaff Cruise Amsterdam. They offer sightseeing cruises around the various canal systems throughout Amsterdam and share very interesting facts about the city.In our experience, we hoped aboard the Flagstaff boat ironically named Titanic. The tour itself takes about an hour. We learned about the reason houses in Amsterdam are so skinny and tall, how bikes end up in the canals, and a bridge called the Skinny Bridge (Magere Brug) which you have the opportunity to travel under and seal your love for a lifetime with a kiss under the bridge.VI. ConclusionIf you find yourself on a solo trip to Europe, Amsterdam is a great place to check out.It is very safe, the locals are very accommodating, and there are tons of things you can do during your stay.Solo Travel to Amsterdam can be a low-cost option compared to many other cities around the world. You don’t need to rely much on public transportation as everything is very much within walking distance.
