Jude listened intently to Alvin’s explanation, leaning back in his chair. It was mostly what he had expected; quite a common answer. But there was a aspect of how the man spoke that made Jude a little confused. Not that he was suspecting the brunette of being untruthful, that would be a strange thing to think after only knowing Alvin for a few days. Still, there was something about how he spoke that seemed mechanical, for lack of a better word. He briefly thought that Alvin would have made a great politician, he knew how to speak convincingly. Banishing the thought, it must have just been Jude’s imagination, he nodded as his companion spoke.

"Ambidexterity? That’s a good skill to have for a doctor." He mused with a smile before hearing Alvin pose the same question back at him. Thinking for a moment, Jude realized that he hadn’t ever really examined it at length, or not as much as he probably should have. On the one hand, his father and mother had always been doctors, there had never really been a question as to what profession he would persue. An active love of learning had also been with him for longer than he can remember, constantly trying to get a hold of new information. He took a moment before responding, his expression matching his thoughts like an open book. “Well,” he started, inhaling and holding the breath, just for a moment, before speaking. “I’ve always liked learning, and being a child of two surgeons garunteed me a great archive of medical texts. It’s just been something that I’ve always been interested in; it’s one of the only fields where new things are constantly being discovered and expanded on.” The student paused, smiling sheepishly. “That said, I really just like any kind of science. I have no real reason to pursue medicine in particular other than it comes pretty naturally to me. "Not that I don’t like helping people, but that is kind of a difficult skill to mess up. It might be nice to have some kind of grand reason for becoming a doctor, but I just don’t have one. I’ve always just," he shrugged "gone with the flow, I guess." It was a pretty lackluster explanation, but it was the truth.

"That's pretty fair." Alvin commented, nodding his head along with Jude's explanation. "You don't really see anyone go into medicine to help people - or at least, not solely help - anymore. Maybe people never did, but doesn't it seem strange to say out loud that you want to be a doctor for more practical reasons? I feel like a lot of people tack on the 'oh yeah, and cause I want to help people.' At the end for social validation." He shrugged one shoulder contemplatively.

"Maybe you should look into being a lab technician or something if you really like the learning part of progressive medicine. You could be the new Yamanaka and discover something pretty incredible." He smiled and tapped his books. "Anyway, all right let's take a look. You were having troubles with the systems?"

Flipping to a page labeled 'structures and processes of the nervous system' Alvin glanced at Jude's book to compare differences. "Are you comfortable with the PNS and CNS or would you like to start with those?" He gestured to a labeled flow chart on the parasympathetic and central nervous systems.

The world we live in. Is it fucked up? Yes. Is it unfair? Without a doubt. Can we change everything to make it better? Highly unlikely. Is that a reason to give up? No. Should we turn blind eyes to the negative aspects? HELL no. What should we do, then? Simple: We change what we have the power to change, acknowledge what we can’t in hopes that someone else eventually can figure out how to, and in the interim make our own situations the best they can be. It won’t be easy, that’s for sure. But it’s still good to try.
