People with type 1 diabetes who don’t want to be lumped in with type 2 diabetes are participating in fatphobia.
You want type 1 to be a separate category from type 2 because you don’t want to be subjected to the scorn, stigma, and discrimination that people with type 2 diabetes experience.
B/c of the stigma that people with type 2 diabetes deserve to be sick– deserve to be punished.
That’s fatphobia.
My husband is a type one diabetic.
He did not choose this disease. He did not choose to be sick at six years old, to have to be held down while his parents and doctors stuck him with needles. He did not choose to have wild lows and highs that prevent him from living his life the way he wants to.
Someone with type two diabetes has made a choice. At some point a doctor warned them, “You’re pre-diabetic- you need to change your ways,” and they didn’t. At some point they choice to feed themselves in a way that gradually made them sicker and sicker.
People with both type one and type two deserve compassion, but they are not the same. One is a choice, the other is not.
