Fourteen years later, and what about that? What about all that time that had already passed? And what about all the time that was yet to come? What were they supposed to do with it? What was he meant to do with all this time and all these feelings and all this love?  And what was he meant to do with Ross? He looked over at his sleeping face again. The same face that had slept on the floor in his room after a long night playing video games and drinking warm beer that Ross’ brother had bought for them. The same face that had slept next to him in the back of the van on their way home from a gig where only ten people showed up to listen to their set. The same face that slept calmly and reassuringly in the aisle seat on the plane while Matty anxiously watched the Atlantic Ocean pass underneath them through the window.  What if he hurt him? What if he broke him? What if he took that sweet, shy thirteen year old boy he’d met and ruined him? He was good at that. Ruining, destroying. And what if he changed his mind? What if he lost interest? He was good at that, too. What if he took Ross’ heart but couldn’t keep it safe? Did he want to hold onto something as fragile as that? Could he be trusted with it?

They spent years on the brink of a kiss. Years in that liminal space between not kissing and kissing. Years with that tingling feeling of a mouth hovering near another mouth. Matty wonders how they managed it. He wonders how they didn’t self destruct, spontaneously combust, by the time they were twenty-four.
